que bien! I actually just got back from there today! I was there for the Charlottesville 10-miler (10mi footrace). I was told that the downtown mall and Belmont are very nice, but many live on JPA (Jefferson Park Avenue), which is also nice, and closer to campus. I'm still not sure what to do about housing, I think I'll send the secretary an e-mail within the next few weeks to forward to incoming students to see if anyone is looking for a roommate. A ver!

Hola! No news from NYU yet...I'm assuming it's rejections from NYU and Penn, though I have acceptances with full funding from UVA and UNC-Chapel Hill. I wish NYU and Penn would get back to me so I can just finalize all of this (kinda have my heart set on UVA already)! Y tu, a donde vas?

Hice una MA en literatura francesa y española y la verdad es que ya he leido parte de su discusion en el foro sin haber participado pero voy a pasar otra vez por el hilo frances para contribuir algo. Ademas seria buena practica - el frances todavia me sale facilmente puesto que acabe con la MA en lit francesa a mediados de diciembre.

Como van los resultados?? I still haven't heard from Penn or NYU - and based on results page I'm assuming these will be both rejections. I just wish they would tell me asap because I want to finalize my plans but don't want to send an acceptance letter to any school until I have official news from every school that i applied to. Hope everyone is well!

Hay examenes comprehensivos sobre esta lista (fue asi tambien con mi MA en frances y espanol, asi que ya estoy acostumbrado). Hay una lista para los estudiantes de maestria y tambien los estudiantes doctorales. Como ya se que me voy a especializar en la literatura peninsular del S. XIX y del S. XX, ya tengo buena idea del trabajo que tengo.

Ahh que bien! Tengo pensado irme para Espana (solo por 1-2 semanas) porque tengo algunos amigos que estaran por alli pero tambien me hace falta currar para ahorrar dinero para el otono. Ademas de eso tengo que buscarme un piso/alojamiento! Tengo una amiga que vive en Charlottesville que me ha dado algunos consejos, pero tambien necesito encontrar a un companero de alquiler para poder repartir los gastos! Vivo en Filadelfia y soy gringo. Lo que he descubierto es que la maestria ayuda muchisimo con lo de los intereses - por ejemplo cuando ingrese a mi programa de MA, queria especializarme en literatura medieval/renacentista hasta que me di cuenta de que esto incluiria leer textos asi como el conde lucanor y el libro de buen amor todo el tiempo... Me intereso todavia por estos periodos historicos/artisticos pero lo que me interesa mas es el papel que han desempenado en la obra de autores modernos y contemporaneos. De todos modos es bueno tener intereses amplios tambien!

Recibi una aprobacion (por e-mail) no 'oficial' de uno de los profes (creo que fue el 1 de febrero) diciendo que se habian reunido la ultima semana de enero. Todavia no he recibido nada oficial por correo. No estoy muy enterado sobre este proceso asi que no se que decirte, pero suerte con las solicitudes!

UVA me aceptó también, pues para la maestría. Recibí un email el 3 de febrero. Sin embargo, espero con ansia para la carta con todos los detalles. Quiero saber todos los detalles... ¿Ya la has recibido? ¿Crees que vas a ingresar a UVA? Mucha gente me dice que Charlottesville es buenísima. Además, la facultad es increíble. UVA fue mi primera opción. ¿En qué área de literatura enfocarás? No más preguntas... hasta por el momento... Felicidades pues! Todavia no he recibido nada por correo pero me imagino que algo va a llegar pronto. Creo que voy a ingresar a UVA, es que solo estoy esperando noticias (official) de NYU y Penn. Te puedo asegurar que Charlottesville es una ciudad buenisima! No la conozco muy bien pero la visite en agosto porque tengo una amiga que esta alli tambien y me gusto muchisimo. Ademas de eso la facultad es excelente - for what it's worth they are ranked #1 by NRC right now for their grad program in Spanish! En cuanto a los intereses -- me intereso mucho por la epoca moderna (S.XIX) y tambien la guerra civil espanola (film, novelas, etc., la evolucion de la estetica clasica en la literatura moderna/contemporanea) Y tu? Alguien esta enterado sobre NYU? Se que han aceptado a los MA (o por lo menos algunos segun the results page) pero no he visto nada acerca del PhD... Quiero que se acabe esta espera tambien!

Si -- creo que depende! I got into UNC - Chapel Hill today with full funding!! Ahora solo estoy esperando a dos (Penn - prob. rejection letter! y NYU). Suerte a todos!!

sevillano, pensé en NYU también, pero NY es un poco caro y me pareció mejor postular a una universidad en una ciudad más barata para no sufrir tanto con los alquileres...

I haven't heard anything sorry :\ - animo! I was actually going to apply to Cornell but for the sake of saving some money I decided not to (I'm thinking now that I should have applied there instead of NYU).

Thanks! I am really ecstatic that I got into UVA! And thanks for letting me know about Penn! I'm guessing that if we're not going to interview weekend it's most definitely a no - unfortunately (this is how it went for me when I applied to Penn a few years ago as an undergrad also - I never ended up retaking the GRE so they probably looked at my app and said thanks, but no thanks again haha). Where did you apply Lexus? What are everyone else's research interests? Also good luck to everyone as we start to hear back!

Alguien sabe algo de Penn? I think I've been rejected as I think they usually have an interview weekend in February which they notify their shortlist about in the last week of Jan/first week of Feb - pero bien..no se absolutamente nada de eso. Creo que voy a UVA!

gracias!! I also am curious to see what other news is coming but the UVA acceptance was sooo relieving as that is one of my top two schools-- great program/opportunities/job placement and I love Charlottesville, VA!

I just finished a double MA in Spanish and French with a GRE score of: 490v 580q 6.0aw. When I originally applied, I applied to two MAs (got into both, ended up going to the school that gave me full funding and TAship), and one PhD (ivy league), but was rejected. I honestly think that I was rejected at the PhD school not only for GRE but for a VERY unfocused SoP (it was literally all over the place, I just reread it..eek) as well as a total lack of teaching experience. Now, as I wait to hear back from PhD programs in Spanish for Fall 2011 admissions, I think that my GRE is MUCH less important (I didn't retake it!) as I have improved everything else 10 fold (I have several semesters of teaching experience now, international exposure as a travel assistant on undergrad study abroad programs, was awarded for a paper and also received a summer travel grant to Paris, much mroe focused research interests, et.c). This theory of mine was just proven today as I got into the number 1 ranked Spanish program in the country (2010 nrc rankings) at a 'public ivy league' school. I haven't heard back from the other 3 schools I applied to yet, but my point is that all isn't lost if you have a lower than avg. GRE (my verbal is terrible for a PhD in humanities, although there's quite a disparity considering I got a 6.0 on aw..). Some will try to tell you that all is lost if you have a GRE score like yours or mine, but I really think you're fine if the rest of your application package looks solid - particularly for MA programs where I think GRE might be less important (NYU in Madrid was one of the schools I got into the first time around, by the way So I did go through 2.5 years of a double MA, but clearly it was what my PhD applications needed because this time around I feel a lot more confident overall.

Serenidad leyendo a Borges?? Quizas estoy un poco parcial - hace poco que me hizo falta estudiar algunos cuentos borgeanos que para mi son algunos de los mas estridentes.. (estoy pensando en Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius). Pero bueno, a cada uno lo suyo! Tengo pensado releerlos para divertirme...algun dia!
