  1. FWIW, at our program, we just hosted a member of the Stony Brook AH faculty for a lecture. He lives in Brooklyn and mentioned that the commute isn't so bad, and definitely better than the alternative.
  2. To add to this discussion: I came out of undergrad (and a very prestigious program) with no thesis, a so-so GPA, and very little idea of what I wanted to do in general, much less academically. I took a year off and then applied to an MA program at a state university (no prestige, but fully funded). During the 2-yr MA, I developed language skills, presented at 3 academic conferences, won a couple of fellowships, and completed an internship. I also maintained a 4.0 GPA in the program (relatively easy to do, but still). This year, I applied for PhD programs and got in a couple of places I would never have gotten in straight from undergrad, for all of the reasons cited above. My two cents. Also, it seems there is a postal service rejection from Harvard over on the results page. My roommate told me there's something in the mail from them at home. Seems they finally got around to rejecting us.
  3. i have now heard from brown (deny), bryn mawr (accept), CUNY (accept), and UMD (accept). i am still yet to hear from harvard and UVA. has anyone heard? maybe someone has heard of a timeline we're looking at here? i'm freaking out a little since both of those schools notified significantly earlier last year. back to thesis...but i will be checking this board...
  4. Hello all. I've been rejected at Brown and accepted at UMD, still waiting on three others. One of which is CUNY--and I saw someone posted a result over on the results page. Anyone else hear from them? I am away on spring break right now and can't check my (snail) mail. The other two I'm waiting on are Bryn Mawr (who will also notify via snail mail) and Harvard (which it seems should notify by email if I'm in and snail mail if I'm out). I won't be back at my house until a week from today...I may go crazy. CRAZY!

UGH my plan was to wait until 5 PM today (Monday) and then give up hope entirely. But because of this snow, the Dept of Ed people might have a snow day...so now I have to keep hope alive until 5 PM tomorrow! Just put me out of my misery. Bleargh

Indeed, someone just posted getting a Javits call yesterday over in the results page. Fingers crossed that they're still calling.

i haven't heard anything...but dear hotep, where are you getting your information??? it sounds right, since on the javits application they say that they will notify by March 1. i just wonder if you have the inside track on something...
  9. I'm also modern/contemporary, and I've definitely heard that little nugget about the glut of mod/com applicants before... Which is why I balanced my hardly-any-chance schools with a couple of you're-soooo-in schools. With one acceptance from the latter in my pocket, it's a bit less life-or-death. Oh who the hell am I kidding, I REALLY want to go to Harvard.
  10. Congratulations, mims! You shouldn't hide at all...one of the ridiculous things about academia is that it somehow trains us to be embarrassed of our accomplishments even as it always demands more and more from each of us. So good for you, and say it loud and proud: YOU GOT IN!!!!!! FREAKING AWESOME! I'm curious: what's your area? You don't have to spill, obviously, and I have no personal stake since I didn't apply. Just wondering!
  11. I wish I could, but I'm a giant wuss. I'm afraid of being that cautionary tale told by future gradcafe baristas in threads with titles like "I TRASHED A RESPECTED PROF. ONLINE -- AM I ACADEMICALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY SCREWED?????" pgw - looking at last year's results, there were a couple of email/phone call acceptances from Harvard on Feb 26 & 28. Last year, those dates were on Tuesday and Thursday of the last week of February. Draw your own conclusions there. It is worth noting, however, that CAA last year was earlier (Feb. 20 - 23, whereas this year it's Feb. 25 - 28) --which may push such a schedule into next week (assuming that they operate on a similar schedule year in, year out). I'm obsessing a little. It's helping me not write the third chapter of my thesis.
  12. Omigosh, there is a phone call acceptance from Yale over in the results page... This makes me nervous. I didn't even apply there, but I was waiting until after CAA to get all worked up about my schools, some of which are comparable in caliber to Yale. Incidentally, I visited Yale in the fall and had a very discomfiting and confrontational little meeting with my would-be advisor. It was definitely a personality thing and should in no way reflect the general atmosphere there, which I'm sure is lovely. There was just a palpable air of ... well ... mutual hate is perhaps a bit harsh, but there you have it. Good luck to all you Yale hopefuls, and if you have idle art history chatter to share, please do so here, since I check this forum entirely too often.

    Javits 09-10

From last year's topic ( viewtopic.php?f=26&t=13436 ), it appears that those who win receive notification around the end of the first week of March (this seems to be hearsay). One poster who did not receive the fellowship received a letter of notification around April 4, dated March 24. So it goes. More waiting, more, more more.
  14. There's a Princeton acceptance lurking over on the results page...the big guns are starting to come out...eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  15. FYI for those of you who are wondering: the invitations for the selection weekend have already gone out, according to the Jefferson Fellows office. I didn't receive one. Well krap.
  16. With every passing second, my hopes weaken for landing an invitation to the UVA Jefferson Graduate Fellowship selection weekend. Notification was supposed to be via email today: http://www.jeffersonscholars.org/graduate/timeline.html and yet I've received nothing. This post is a call into the night: if you, or someone you know, has received notification, please post on this topic so that I can stop this obsessive wondering. I'm going bananas and pineapples when I should be dutifully writing my thesis. Thank you for your help.

I also applied to the Javits (it seems so long ago now...) for contemporary Art History. You can read my stats over on the GC blog: http://thegradcafe.com/blog/ I'm hopeful but realistic. Ranking applicants even within fields can often be utterly random, and sometimes downright useless. They do offer an explicit quantitative rubric of the areas they will assess in the app, which is a welcome bit of transparency in the typically opaque realm of fellowship applications. However, the app also states that they take into account financial need, while not including that area of assessment in the rubric. Go figure.
