  1. Yeah, also look at the subfield rankings. Strengths and weaknesses tend to be clustered around those: https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/political-science-rankings
  2. I'm curious about that too. In my case, this might have been endogenously determined by the amount of effort I put into each app. I have a friend from econ who received an e-mail from a top20 school saying basically "hey, we would accept you, but think you'll get recruited by some top10 school. Let us know if we got it wrong". So some of that thinking must go into not recruiting someone who you think will not accept the offer while you could go with the 2nd-best option of recruiting someone who is actually thinking about attending. There's also the fact that some schools might have the luxury of recruiting people solely on upside, whereas other schools might be looking for ppl who can RA/TA right out of the gate. But anyways, 2/11 is too soon to tell I guess
  3. Michigan probably late next week, cornell 3rd week of february probably
  4. Read this thread: Can't reccomend it enough. It may seem too dark, but the correct takeaway (IMO) is to not beat yourself up over stuff that is near random. It's about the job market, but it has its parallels with admissions
  5. Cornell always takes a while; too much material, too many applicants, very holistic...takes longer
  6. claiming chicago rejection. Randomly checked the portal, did not receive email yet (but there probably will be at some point). 1a/1w/2r/3p
  7. It's still 10:12 in Chicago, I expect we'll hear more from them today, but I think it will take a bunch of hours
  8. Yeah, a couple of people have claimed a few pages ago
  9. hi, y'all. couple of questions: GWU: whoever got rejected received any email or just randomly checked the portal? Mine is unchanged, I'm assuming it's some waitlist EDIT: GWU was kind enough to erase my questions by posting a rejection on the website lol. No email. UChicago: anyone from CP among the admits? any rejects? Portal has nothing, looks like this:
  10. Try the MIT living wage calculator: https://livingwage.mit.edu/ I don't think it is a very accurate tool for grad students because our lives tend to he a little cheaper depending on the location. For instance, if you're in a city with good public transit, you're not spending a gazzilion dollars on gasoline and stuff, unless you really want a car. But as a rule of thumb, I *think* that whenever your stipend covers this living wage expenses it is a pretty good stipend. But I'd love to hear more about that; I'm not american, these are just my impressions editing to say: for instance, Chicago's UPass allows you to use public transportation for a full quarter for around USD 130, I think. It works for all universities in the area, I think. Urbana-Champaign is said to be a city with pretty decent public transportation options for a city of its size. D.C. you can ride the subway/bus for a semestre for USD 100. etc
  11. Also check the placement page of programs. The more honest and upfront the better. Saying the program has placed in the past on x, y and z means very little If, on average, the placement is not academic. Places like UNC chapel Hill keep a good record
  12. My impression is that pedigree matters, much like the gre, in a kind of negative way. A good one won't guarantee anything, a "bad" one will make your life harder. But it's a case by case thing. For instance, would you trade UC Davis (25) for Brown (41)? Much more money, east coast networking between Boston and DC could perhaps make for the difference in rankings. No cali sunshine though, and a big rankings gap. Would you trade Ann Arbor for UChicago? 6 spots, but a much cooler city (imo) and you're already in the top 10 anyway. Anyways, the mkt is rough all over the place. Your personal happiness will matter, the amount of money and job market support your dept could offer matters (for instance, as a foreigner, you could have a better phd if you don't have to TA out of the gate, ie, you could use one year to adapt to language etc) also matters a lot. Places like Ohio, UMD and Rice offer great methods/programming skills, which help with the nonacademic job market. Lots of variables!
  13. I second that. There is no transitivity in admissions. NU was my 1st official result after a couple of presumed rejections/waitlists from lower-ranked institution - and I mention rankings as someone not into them, but just to stress how idiosyncratic the process is. Yesterday at lunch I was convinced I was applying again at year's end and everything changed. I know of people who had 12 rejects and then 1 admission into a top 10 school in said person's subfield. We just send the best signal we can and hope it doesn't get lost in the noise at least in one single departament.
  14. Thank you! No, foreigner from foreign institution
  15. Hi guys, Sorry for the scarce info. I was super excited, it's a dream come true. Subfield is CP, received email with offer attached. I glanced at the portal and did not not any change. I've been keeping tabs on NU for a long time, and their admiasion is always staggered. So try to keep it cool!
  16. Claiming northwestern. I'll be drunk for the next 48h, best of luck, y'all!
  17. Yeah, they do that to know If you're taking their offer, or if you will maybe use it as a leverage to another school. But kinda fucked up to take someone else's time just for that lol
  18. BTW, has anyone received rejections/waitlists from GWU or knows if they are done already? I thought there was more to come, but then again I thought the same about Notre Dame haha
  19. pple usually put "Politcs", Princeton, so it does not display on the political science search
