I haven't heard from UCI just yet but I'm seeing it as a soft rejection. I received a letter from Iowa with the standard "your manuscript was well-received" etc etc. It excited me very much last year when I received the same message verbatim but this year...eh. Just means I've become stagnant in my writing. Time to keep practicing to get different results next application season It'll be my fourth time applying, but every time I've been rejected I've learned something new about myself, and I don't believe I'll ever get anywhere with my writing until I've come to know who I truly am. Also, to those who are struggling this application round, I recommend the essay "On Self-Respect" by Joan Didion. It's a hell of a read.

Nothing from my two places just yet, but they have already begun calling people so I'm in acceptance of any outcome. My friend overdosed and passed away 8 days ago, so that's been a big reason why I've lost interest in these applications. Y'all, don't beat yourself up too much throughout this process; there's no point to your suffering.

Congrats to the recent victories 😊 I always get a flash of envy when it comes to these things but it’s hard to last long when I see how excited y’all get. Truly an endearing sort of joy that is nice to see and sense. meanwhile I have yet to hear from UCI or Iowa but it’s cool it’s cool 😩😩 the news will come when it comes and I can’t do anything to control ittt aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

Hey y'aaall I drank too much coffee lololol Hope everyone is doing okay this weekend. Been lurking for a while but wanted to join in on the fun :^) It is an annoying stressful feeling to not have heard back from any schools yet, but it is kind of fun too, this suspense, and it will be all the more fun if I end up getting accepted somewhere lolol. This is my third time applying. Last year I was waitlisted in one school, to no avail, and was given a nice note by my top choice that their readers liked my writing "very much" and hoped I would apply again if I didn't land anywhere. I really really hope I am accepted this year. I let myself fantasize about getting that phone call. If I don't get it I will be sad but of course there is no other option for me but to try again. I don't know if I shot myself in the foot or not but I only applied to two schools because those are the only ones that really call to me. Good luck to us all, yaaay.

Hey. Sorry to hear you’re struggling. But you are not experiencing “Ls,” you’re experiencing life. It’s not easy and you should be proud of yourself for getting this far despite your challenges. The grand fact of this career path is that it is often thankless and always grueling. I’m sure you know this. One year of rejections does not mean you’re in any corner. It just means you’ve been rejected this year. I also have not been writing recently. Sometimes life gets in the way and we need to sort out more urgent matters than the nourishing of our creative spirit ??‍♂️ The challenges you are experiencing now are helping you grow, and you will be a better writer because of them. So don’t despair you never know what the future holds. And, at the end of the day, do you write for a degree, or do you write because you love to write?

Wow, February 4th already! I hope everyone is managing to channel all that nervous energy into something healthy and compassionate! I’ve recently been getting into meditation (guided ones for now!) and it’s done wonders for me. Anyone reading anything good right now? I’ve been reading Gravity’s Rainbow for the past, like, 7 months. It’s absurd and challenging and imaginative and unapologetic and I friggin love it.

Hey y’all I hope the waiting isn’t too excruciating for everyone! I’m definitely starting to feel it. Last year I applied to five schools and got soundly rejected. This year I’m applying to: Iowa, Miami, Vanderbilt, St Louis, and Michigan. It is my second time applying and I’m excited because my writing samples are much stronger than last year’s and I feel confident that I have a fighting chance this time around. Last year I was more like, “pwease take pity on me and accept me” ayayay. I’ve been out of school since 2019 and just been working menial labor jobs since then, because I don’t want to waste time and money in school if it’s not in writing, and I’m really hoping this year is the year I escape the fatigue and monotony of a blue collar life! Fingers crossed!
