Is anybody moving to Davis this summer? I recently accepted my offer to a PhD program at UC Davis (yays!).
  2. hey locsofgold, I applied to UC Davis' Cultural Studies program last year and was admitted. Unfortunately, I was not able to start their PhD program due to personal problems. However, the program deferred my admission, yay! So if you are accepted at UC Davis we are going to meet each other What's your research interest? Have you heard about admissions decisions yet?
  3. I'm probably writing in the wrong thread right now, but: I am going to visit UC Davis soon and I have no idea what to wear!!!!!! Does anybody of you have the same problem? Do I have to wear really nice business clothes, in which I would feel so uncomfortable, btw ? What kinds of shoes are appropriate for that occasion? I just don't want to spend lots of money on nice clothes right now, since I'm pretty broke .
  4. I just got an email from Ohio State University telling me I was wait-listed. They didn't say anything about my position on their waiting list though. Oh well. Btw, of the total application pool of 104 applicants they offered admission to 7 of them to start their PhD program in the fall of 2011. That's less than 10%, woah! I thought OSU wouldn't be that competitive.
  5. I applied to UC Davis' Cultural Studies program with an emphasis on Gender Studies of course, aaaaaand I GOT IN!!!! I just received an email from their department and some guy wants to talk to me on the phone now and explain the program to me and stuff. I am so thrilled
  6. I was waitlisted at U Minnesota yesterday. They told me in an email that they offered admission to only 3 applicants this time. They also added that I made it into the first tier and that they would consider my application again if one of the accepted applicants declined their offer....which I guess was just a nice way of saying: Well, that's too bad you didn't make it into our program. Try again next year :-/
  7. I am Actually, I'm already done with all my applications. Since I'm an international student my deadlines mostly hovered around Dec 1st. Where are you going to apply for grad school? What are your research interests? I applied to: Bloomington, UMD, Ohio State, University of Minnesota, University of Arizona, Emory, Rutgers. I also applied to some programs which had concentrations in WGST, such as Georgia State (Sociology), UC Davis (Cultural Studies), and Yale (Sociology) -- I only applied to Yale though because one of my recommenders knows someone of the grad school committee there My research interests involve: Queer Theory, LGBTQ Studies, Cultural Studies, Poststructuralism, Social Constructivism etc.
  8. I would proofread it Would you read mine too?
  9. Could anybody please proofread my SOP and tell me if it is appropriate or not?! I'm particularly uncertain about my English :-/ So I really need someone correcting awkward sentences, bad word choice, and improper grammar. Also, I think my SOP is far too long, but I'm not quite sure where to cut it. I would send it to those who are willing to read via PM. In return, I would proofread your Statements, too. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks so much!
  10. I took the GRE yesterday and, as in your case, my practice scores (I mostly used Powerprep) were all over the place. I even ended up getting an abysmal 1040 once, while on the real test I finally received a 1250 (560 verbal, 690 math). I know, it's not that amazing of a score. I have to say though that I'm an international student whose mother tongue is German, not English. So my verbal scores mostly jumped around a lot while still practicing, due to an increased possibility of obscure words (mostly those actually that a native speaker would declare as easy) showing up that I have never heard of before. Anyway, don't get too nervous on the real test -- I know, it's easier said than done though. Also, try to stay calm, even if words or math problems come up that you think are too complicated. They are not. The right answer must be somewhere in the answer choices -- this way of thinking helped me A LOT!
