Congratulations on your recommendation! Have you heard that Argentina specifically does Skype interviews? (I ask because I've seen references to interviews for UK and Russia and vague mentions of a couple of other unspecified countries, but I don't know anything about Argentina in particular. The vast majority of countries don't do any interview.)

Yeah, I know it's not likely -- but on the other hand, someone has to be those 80... why not us?
-
Is it February yet? Pretty please?
-
Congrats on getting through it -- I hope it went well for you!

Congrats on your recommendation! The two countries I've seen specifically named for phone interviews at this stage are UK and Russia, though there may be others.

Just another plug for the 2015-2016 spreadsheet. Lurkers, you can add yourselves without having to make a gradcafe account, and the spreadsheet is anonymous (you choose what info to add, if any). Notification of (non)recommendation came out early this year (whew!), which is probably why this year's thread has much less traffic than other years. However, other years have 400+ entries in the spreadsheet, and we're so far just over 100. If you haven't already, please add yourself, and if you have any friends who have applied, encourage them to enter their country info also.

Yes, this is a very real issue. When I was abroad for 10 months a few years ago, one of my grandmothers passed away on the day I flew abroad (not unexpectedly, but I got the news by phone during a layover in the US). A few months later, my grandfather passed. Hugs to anyone who might find themselves in that situation, whether it's expected or not. You'll get through it, but it's rough.

Spreadsheet question here -- does anybody know how to add the previous years' info as separate tabs? The spreadsheet for 2014-15 did that. If someone could do that for the 2015-16 spreadsheet, it would be helpful to compare easily when countries have announced in previous years... many thanks!

Hej! Go for it. I did a masters at Linköping a few years ago, and now I'm back in a different part of the country at a folkhögskola. In my case, the program didn't seem all that rigorous, but if you put a lot into it, you get a lot back out. One thing to watch out for: I believe that Swedish universities are introducing tuition starting in Fall 2011. (I've read that applications are waaaaay down as a result, so maybe competition isn't as high... but also, you'll likely have fewer awesome classmates from less developed countries.)

Hej! I'm still waiting to hear back, but I might be there, too.
-
There's always hope for waitlist then!
-
Nope, got the rejection letter, as expected. *shrugs*
-
Sorry to hear that -- hang in there. (That means I'll be checking the mail for my own rejection now, too. Thanks for letting us know -- the only thing worse than rejection is the waiting, and it's nice to know what's coming, at least.)

(I'm just saying I wasn't the person who posted acceptance results from Cornell on the lists.)
-
Not me, unfortunately. :-(

Hej and welcome! From Cornell I only have that same generic "we-received-your-application" e-mail that's been mentioned in the thread. For Yale, someone posted in the results thread on Feb 4 that they had gotten an interview (theory Ph.D.), with phone interviews that week and decisions "shortly after Feb 17". Since I haven't heard a thing from them, I'm assuming I didn't get in. Good luck to you, though! Did your unofficial letter from Princeton have good news, I hope? Anyone have any news at all from Northwestern, Berkeley, U of Washington or U of Iowa, by any chance?
-
Let's just rub a little salt in the wound, shall we? My goodness.
-
Yipes. Is there a way for you to interview by phone/skype and still be considered, I hope?
-
It's nice hearing people's good news! Yay you!
-
I got an identical message just now, too. Looks like they're getting underway! Yipes...
-
Hold onto that dream. It could happen!
-
Do all musicology PhD programs do interviews? Or does it just depend on the school?
-
Hej! Tex, congrats on getting all your apps in! I'm just finishing up one last one with a January 15 deadline (Cornell), then the real waiting begins... several Ph.D. musicology programs, and two M.A.s as well. JSK, maybe we'll end up meeting at UW. I'm attracted to the program for several reasons, and it would also be nice to stay local (Washington), though it would mean further Ph.D. applications down the road.

Good luck with your studies, snowballed! I can recommend Sweden. I have a M.A. in a linguistic field from a Swedish university, and a friend of mine has one in some sort of environmental engineering. It was one year, though now I think it's been expanded to two. I don't know how well the degree translates for further study in North America, but it helped me get my ESL teaching job at an American university when I got back, and a Canadian classmate in my program just got a job teaching language at McGill.
