For those asking earlier between the difference of CGS-D and SSHRC doctoral fellowship, I found this from the CGS-D page: For all three agencies, only one application must be completed and submitted to be considered for both a CGS D award and either an agency-specific doctoral award (for NSERC/SSHRC applications) or any available doctoral Priority Announcements (for CIHR applications). CGS D awards are then offered for the top-ranked eligible applications in each agency’s competition. So, if you were offered the CGS-D, but aren't eligible (i.e., foreign institution), it is only just an automatic award given your ranking. The SSHRC should then convert it to the doctoral fellowship (looking at previous years). Another question: on the extranet, does it say "CGS-Doc" for everyone? I'm talking about the link you click, which then opens up to the page with the PDFs and zip file.

That's what I thought, but for example UoT calls it the 2024-2025 competition (where the deadline was autumn 2023): https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/students/current-students/student-awards-funding-opportunities/2024-2025-cgs-doctoral-cihr-nserc-sshrc-competition/

The budget says "beginning in the 2024-2025 year"...if it's correct even the May 2024 start dates for awards are in the 2024-2025 year, then this seems to be the case. I imagine there will be some internal scrambling to adjust to the new rules though, so may take a couple weeks.

Sorry for being a broken record, but has anyone in a foreign institution received the CGS-D? I've read previous forums and they all said SSHRC eventually just switched them to the SSHRC award. Just making sure this will be the same procedure this year too--very antsy about this as my extranet only says CGS-D while my application was clear I'm at a foreign institution (applied directly as well). Also, is it correct to assume that the only other difference, aside from geographic eligibility, between CGS-D and SSHRC is where you ranked in the other applications?
-
By the way: NDP just announced they'll support the budget in the vote today. So, the funding increases as well as number of awards will go through (total, they will offer 1750 more awards it seems).
-
Did anyone get ranking criteria on their letters (offered or otherwise)? Last year they had it under the application results rubric. Just curious.

Thanks for sharing this! I definitely do not have two different sets of documents, I've just received the zip file and two additional PDFs (Notice Decision and Notice Award), only mentioning CGS-D. Although from reading previous posts of years before, it seems that SSHRC just moves you to the SSHRC doctoral fellowship. It makes sense you'd automatically get it as CGS-D is considered higher grade. They may also perhaps be waiting for info. from the gov't as this year, 2024-2025, everyone should just be getting $40K, no matter the award.
-
Is anyone familiar with when and how they pay--will it be the end of the month and if so, will it be a lump sum for the year?
-
Congratulations! I have the same question. Although I probably will be just asking for the award now. Were you given a different instalment request form? Mine is only says "Request for first instalment of award paid by Canadian institution".

I got offered CGS-D!!! Committee 2A: Applications: 123, Offered: 52 (42.3%), my score was 10.45/12 I am in a French institution, so as it seems I will instead be dropped to the SSHRC award, so looking forward to seeing how that gets funded.

Don’t worry, I haven’t either. Solidarity in waiting!

Well I’m B and I haven’t even got an email mentioning they’re sending alphabetically 😅

Had trouble again with the committee selection this year. I’m in philosophy, but doing AI ethics. But the group philosophy with the classical languages, religious studies, etc. So you’re not certain you’ll get reviewers with an idea of your topic.
-
Also, you are correct they will be merged: https://budget.canada.ca/2024/report-rapport/chap4-en.html# (Figure 4.2). They also mention: "To make it easier for students and fellows to access support, the enhanced suite of scholarships and fellowship programs will be streamlined into one talent program." But here it just says the "New Talent Program Annual Award", not mentioning if it will apply to existing awards
-
Do we know if it's all scholarships (existing and awarded in the future) will benefit from the 40K? As in, if we get awarded the $20K/year this week, will this turn into $40K/year once the budget is approved. Or is it only for awards after budget approval?

Hi all, I just posted this message in the regular forum, but thought I'd try here as well: Hey everyone! I don't know if this forum is still active (or if there's a new one for the upcoming applications). I will be applying after a first unsuccessful attempt and I have an issue regarding which committee to choose (it's been discussed on here before). My thesis is in philosophy with a topic on AI Ethics. I feel that Committee 2 with philosophy is not well-suited as the other members are in very classical areas. I think other applicants had this issue before. I'm wondering if anyone else in Philosophy and AI Ethics is applying, or has applied and chose a particular committee and was successful. Any advice would be amazing! Thanks!!

Yea I agree with you on that one, especially given the increasing trend of interdisciplinary theses. Although I did a search of previous years SSHRC fellowships and I saw a handful given to AI-based projects. So I do think it also has to do with the luck that the one specific community will have the right magic combination of members. -

Well...something to be said about solidarity living with this situation 😅. I do understand the initial reason to group philosophy with the classical subjects, but surely it's not difficult to know by now that at least half of philosophical theses are way more contemporary and interdisciplinary in areas like ethics of AI, healthcare, etc. Yet we need the expert with philosophical methodology to judge us. (Especially AI Ethics being a massive field now--I don't want to sound like a total sore loser through haha). -

Finally got in to a page with 4 separate PDF documents--maybe this is the regular page? Anyways, unfortunately didn't get it. First time applying, directly from abroad. Luckily I still am funded by my French contract so not in *total* financial ruin, but definitely a blow to self-esteem. I know my application wasn't perfect, but I felt a little stifled by the selection committees. I'm from a Philosophy background, but working on AI ethics. I chose committee 7522 as it's the only one with philosophy and thus related to moral theory, but was also filled with experts from dead languages, classics, history... Committee 752-2A Total score: 8.23, 88 with 62 offered among 128 applications. Score of last funded is 9.12. So, not on the waitlist clearly (unless many of you decline! haha) Thanks everyone for the support through this channel. Excellent work and congratulations to everyone who succeeded. They're simply ins't enough funding in Canada (by the way, support the strikes for increased research funding as 20K is hardly enough for anyone to survive). Despite rejection, our research is worth it--at least, that's what I'm telling myself ha -

Out of curiosity, does FRQSC allow you to combine funding with SSHRC, or do you have to choose between the two? -
