SSHRC CGS -D & Doctoral Fellowships 2023-2024

Yes, they definitely used this wording to cover any delays. I totally get that with the sheer amount of applications, delays can happen, especially if any tech issues arise. I just wish they would contact us even with a mass email of "Sorry we're delayed, but expect another email by..." -

If anyone wants advice, it does *not* help, while waiting for the results, to obsessively look over your submitted application looking (and finding) areas where you could have done better. I may or may not be doing this now... -

You have access because you previously applied right? There wasn't any email earlier this month giving us access as I didn't get one... I found this site which I believe is the extranet (https://portal-portail.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/s/login.aspx), but I'm scared if I attempt to create an account, or click "forget password" if they've already made me one, it will crash my application or something 😅 -

Conspiracy theory that SSHRC actually just disbanded and forgot to tell us 😂 -

Maybe someone could call (I'm currently abroad and calling the toll-free number SSHRC has ends up being costly 😕 ). I know CIHR told whoever called them that the results would be yesterday evening, which didn't end up happening, but would be nice to know if they are aware of any delays, etc. -

Yes you may be right. Also given that its 6pm EST, assuming some manual human work goes into posting the results, we may be nearing their end of the work day... -

Likewise--no longer to like any more posts, but I appreciate the community atmosphere and solidarity everyone has put in while waiting. Let's hope the results will be in soon! -

You're so sweet, thank you :)) Yes, I'm hoping that since AI ethics is very "Ã la mode" right now that it'll help my application. -

So basically there's a new area of tech that makes Explainable AI 'human-centred" --explainable AI is another algorithm that tries to "unpack" a deeply complex algorithm that humans can't understand. For example, giving us an explanation of the reasons why the bank's algorithm rejected a loan application. So, looking at what must be done with this technology to sustain our vulnerable nature (e.g. the fact we make mistakes and need to correct ourselves); how interacting with this technology can support it and help us express our vulnerable human nature to others. So really bringing AI back down to human level because it is made for and used *by us*. I am not a tech guy though, so it's going to be more conceptual analysis and relying on a lot of tech-based colleges to help me understand all the intricacies of AI ahah. Thanks for the follow up by the way. I'm in the early stages of this thesis (did prior work as a researcher in AI ethics), so it really helps me to try and explain my currently vague positions to others. -

Wow everyone's projects are so cool--like it's said before, I don't envy the committees! My thesis is interdisciplinary, but largely in philosophy, and I'm considering how a virtue of vulnerability (first part is for me to position our ability to express vulnerability as an essential characteristic to sustaining moral duties/relationships) can be supported by human-centred explainable AI. Basically, AI that we can better understand and interact with. I thus chose the 7522 committee as it was the only one with philosophy, but I hope it wasn't too technical for any other committee members. But it is my intention to be well within "practical ethics" to give some action-guiding research to AI development. -

Thanks! Yes that's what I thought too -- just had a mini panic that I entered it in wrong, 0 months as I started January 1, 2023 (taking into account application was done in 2022, so nothing by December 31st). Although what is interesting is that when I looked at previous fellowship holders, all the ones abroad in France received the full 48 month amount. -

This is perhaps a stupid question, but does anyone know from prior experience if the number of months completed before applying has any weight on the decision (beyond the determining the dollar amount we would get)? For example, I had 0 months as I didn't officially start my PhD until January 1st, so I'm within the 0-12 month duration of the fellowship. I have previous research experience, publications, etc., but don't know if the "0 months" will be an issue... -

From my understanding, we would have to quickly accept and the first payment would be made sometime by the end of May. -

Is there a chance there could be delays given the current federal public servant strike? I don't see SSHRC as departments directly affected, but perhaps there could be something going on there... (totally support the workers by the way, not complaining if this is the case!) -

Hello all! New to the forum and also equally in suspense waiting for our response (first year applying--direct application as at a foreign institution). If it helps anyone's stress, I noticed that the data on SSHRC doctoral fellowships acceptance is around 20-25% out of the 2000 and some applicants per year. I recently, however, stumbled upon this document where the rate is actually around 43% because CGS and SSHRC doctoral fellowship numbers together (we're equally considered for both) (https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2022/crsh-sshrc/CR1-19-2021-eng.pdf page 28), so out of the just over 2000 applicants, almost half received funding! Unless I'm understanding the data wrong, this provided me with *some* temporary stress relief.
