Sounds like they are interested in you, which is good. Also sounds like they are going to expect a little more out of you during the interview. What program is this for? I have not experienced something like that, so it's not standard procedure as far as I know, but everyone is different

alternate UCD BMCDB interview is 3/3-3/5, with the main day being the 4th.

I think all you need to say is something along the lines of "Thank you for taking the time to meet with me ______ (whenever it was), I enjoyed our conversation." If something in particular was talked about, that you found helpful or interesting you should say that in the email as well. Here is an email I sent ;; Dear Professor X, Thank you for taking the time and talking with me on Friday. I appreciate your blunt honesty regarding the program and the type of students that thrive in it. I will keep the points you made in mind as I am making my decision regarding a graduate program. Thanks again! Best, Stefan He replied by saying "Good Luck" and thats it. During the interview he basically went over the strengths of the program and the types of students that thrived in it. Because there were two people being "interviewed" we didn't talk much about research, though I was able to get in my 3 minute spiel before the other interviewee showed up and he brought up a specific project that he is trying to get funding for that deals exactly with my background. He was a "to the point" type of person, which I appreciated. These people aren't necessarily looking to start up an email correspondence with you, unless of course you two hit it off proper. Keep it short and express your enthusiasm about the program. Definitely do not over think.

thanks. why did you decline UT-Austin interview? it wasn't high up on your list or something?

Everyone keep a good lab notebook! (obviously) I am writing up materials and methods for a couple of manuscripts right now. I don't have the best lab notebook, serendipitously everything related to the manuscripts, including all intermediates is well documented. Looking at my notebook though, JEEZ it could have been bad! A great lesson to learn before graduate school!

Notes are typically not necessary in the interview environment. I took a standard composition book with me anyway. In it I had a concise outline of my research and brief summaries of what my interviewers were researching. I didn't use either as I had already committed both to memory, but the process of taking the notes helps me take in information. I did write down one line in the notebook after an interview - the interviewer basically was trying to figure something out and I said I would think about it and wrote down his goal. I then emailed him following up on our interview and directed him to a recent publication that might be useful in his project. At the end of the day, I think it is good to bring a notebook.

Well. sometimes rejections take a bit longer to trickle out. I'm totally expecting rejections from UCSD BIO and UNC BBSP. At this point it doesn't really matter, though UCSD was my #2.

just called UCD BMCDB - They just started looking at applications, depending on order of invites, we should be hearing from them in the next few weeks. They better invite me! AND have a late interview weekend. or ELSE!!! - lol
-
They offered to accomodate me. They want to wait until more people respond with conflicts so they can plan an alternative weekend as opposed to individual visits. I gave them my availability, which is pretty much booked until 3/10, and they said the alternate dates will be sometime after 3/10. You should let me know how you like it!

go to your profile, click edit profile, then on from the left options click on signature. congrats

I'm officially considering myself to be on the wait list for BBSP at Chapel-hill and UCSD Biology. This is only because I have yet to receive official rejections and other applicants have. UCD BMCDB needs to hurry it up though, straight slippin' yo. Next week is going to be my gauntlet - 3 interviews in 9 days. <--- gameface

One down 7 to go. I had a good time at Austin and I am looking forward to the rest.

I'm all packed and ready for my flight to Austin tomorrow @ 820am. Business casual is the required dress code and probably a good idea for all programs. Feeling good after two interview prep sessions with UCSF faculty yesterday. Just going to be enthusiastic, relax, and enjoy - If anyone else is going, i will be the tall bearded guy with brightly colored shirts and sweaters - HA
-
I have heard that they do not care from a recent PhD graduate (MCB). Just one source though. I'm sure it also depends on committee members and what they care about
-
just got off the phone with UCSD Biological Sciences. This is what Andy said "Interview dates are mostly booked, there still might be some space for the second week 2/11-2/12 (i think). They sometimes send out later invitations for alternate dates. As of now you are in a waiting game, in good company (har)" Still hope, but not much. Rejections have not been posted on results page yet.

If you are planning on declining anyway, you have some room to leverage and get a feel for what is going on. Start by saying you're broke as a joke and then asking them for a skype/phone interview and see what their reaction is - in addition mention you have talked to your PI and say they are trying to get you money so you can visit. At the same time ask for the pamphlets they pass out at interviews because you are really interested. Doesn't seem like this would hurt you, it will only show your interest by showing them you are trying to find alternatives. You do seem to be in pretty good standing as far as your interviews are concerned, so you should ask yourself is putting in extra work into a program you are not that interested in worth it?
-
In my experience, yes. Bigger programs will have three and smaller programs might only have one.
-
It was an email sent on 1/21. Deadline to accept the invitation is 2/1, if you're going to get an interview it should be this week. Unless they have another later date. Should be quite the party, though you don't get to go out much during these interviews.

Just got word from UI-Urbana Champaign for an interview 3/1-3/2. No conflicts with other interviews, though I think 8 interviews might be pushing my physical and mental limits. Then there is my work that needs to be considered - trying to get 3 papers submitted ASAP. I guess this is one of the better problems to have!

ASU Biodesign seems pretty flexible with their interview dates - if anyone cares
