  1. I got a letter from the grad studies office at my university telling my I received an NSERC scholarship! w00t. It's either the CGSM or PGSM, but I won't know until I get the letter from NSERC (today?). In any case, I can only hold the PGSM in the US. Congrats to the other scholarship/grant/fellowship winners!
  2. Grad secretary at my university said we will probably be getting letters shortly. Aiming for a CGSM here (though I can't hold it in the US).
  3. Cornell, likely for set theory and logic, with maybe a mix of analysis and topology.
  4. The Mathematics Dept. is partially reimbursing my travel costs for a visit, so it might not hurt to ask.
  5. I got accepted to the Ph.D. program in (pure) mathematics with a full fellowship, and while I'm still waiting on responses from a handful of schools, Cornell was a near-top choice for me. I've basically set my heart on going, and I'll be visiting Cornell and Ithaca in 2 weeks (the department is covering a large portion of my travel costs). I'm still in a state of surprise over getting in, and I'm thrilled to go!
  6. I've been hearing about this bill that was passed in the WI state legislature removing the right of collective bargaining from all public employees, including profs and grad students/TAs at the UW schools. I'm sure there are some people around here following this much more closely than I. Any thoughts on this? What kind of effect might this have on a place like UW-Madison?

    Ithaca, NY

(BUMP) Just got accepted by Cornell with a great offer; very seriously considering heading here, regardless of my other applications (Cornell was one of my top choices anyways). One thing I am wondering; when is the best time to be looking for an apartment in Ithaca? June? I'd likely want to live off campus, and I really like the idea of living in one of these old converted homes. I don't drive, and bicycle will probably be my primary form of transportation during the non-winter months (so yes, both of them), and I may brave it out on the bike when the snow falls too.
  8. I received my first acceptance the other day to the Ph.D. program in mathematics at Cornell. I'm completely thrilled, and think that this may be my school of choice. (I've applied to a few 'better' schools, but I really don't have much expectation for acceptances from Berkeley, UCLA or Harvard, especially consider that the first two have already sent out acceptances.) Does anyone here have any experience as a grad student at Cornell? Living in Ithaca? Thoughts other than 'gorges are beautiful and winter is long'? It's an Ivy, so are there certain social aspects that go along with that (clothes, events, etc)? Thanks.
  9. Sigh... 12 schools: (in USD/CAD since they are about equal now) Application Fees: $961.00 GRE (General + Math Subject + Score Reports): $603.00 Transcripts and Postage: $224.00 Total: $1788.00
  10. I know that Toronto has a funding guarantee for Arts and Sciences students: http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/graduate/funding
  11. I really wish I had the chance to take algebraic geometry as an undergraduate, but there is no course in the subject at my university (we have one algebraic geometer, and he has given it as a grad course before). My strongest interest is in general topology, but this isn't really an active research area anymore. My other main interests are set theory, and applications of set theory to other areas (especially topology and analysis). I'm hoping to end up doing some kind of set-theoretic topology, but it depends which grad schools accept me. Topological groups, functional analysis, as well as mathematical logic, are also topics I find increasingly interesting.
  12. You might want to double check, but I recall UT-Austin not requiring the subject test, and they are definitely a top 20 school.
  13. Thanks guys. I contacted UIUC's Math department, and if anyone is curious, I was told that a declaration of $3300 is sufficient, so long as indicate that I will require funding to enroll. It seem that, likely, other universities that require a declaration of finances *with* the application will be similar.
