  1. I wonder if this refers to the Fulbright-Hayes Doctoral Dissertation Program or any PhD funding?
  2. Skyfire, Do you remember if that doc was online? I searched "site:us.fulbrightonline.org additional funding" and couldn't really find any specifics other than this statement: The allowance provides some funding for research, books, and/or supplies. Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, in-country travel, study materials, or equipment should explore additional funding from other sources to supplement the Fulbright funding Edit: I found the 2011 brochure that states:  Funds from Other Sources. Funds from other scholarships, fellowships, or grants in dollars or foreign currencies received concurrently with a Fulbright grant will be deducted if they duplicate benefits under the Fulbright grant. But, if such grants are for assistance in meeting family expenses of grantees or other expenses not covered by the Fulbright grant, no deduction will be made. Grantees may not accept remunerative work abroad during the period of the grant without prior approval of the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in the host country. It seems vague at best. Seems to indicate they want to know what other funds you have so they can make final approval
  3. Here is the Mercer most expensive cities list. It's is somewhat helpful in figuring out, just how expensive various cities will be. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AonYZs4MzlZbdEpORkVwN2plQ1lLV0pVQ0xES1p3aEE#gid=1
  4. Have any of you heard of a home U.S. institution maintaining funding (i.e. assistantship) during the Fulbright abroad? This would increase income, but probably only available to Doctoral students doing dissertation work with the Fulbright.
  5. Yeah I applied to Germany but I didn't apply for a DAAD. It wasn't on my radar but wish I had applied for a DAAD. Congrats on your DAAD! Knowing on the DAAD probably lessens the anticipation of the Fulbright a little.
  6. Pulled this from the Israel Fulbright website under the pre-doctoral Fulbright student fellowship: (http://www.fulbright...ndex.php?id=710) Monthly maintenance allowance: The allowance for the full academic year (nine months) for an unaccompanied grantee is $13,400. Grantees with a single accompanying dependent receive $19,250 for the academic year; those with two accompanying dependents - $21,600; and those with three or more - $23,950payment of tuition for course work undertaken at academic institutions and for Hebrew and/or Arabic language instructionresearch allowance ($500), where appropriatelimited health insurance for the grantee onlyorientation meetings in the United States (attendance compulsory) and in Israel, and other grantee events during the course of the year Anyone else feel like their entire life is in limbo. It seems I can't even make the simplest decisions until I know where I'll be living in the next five months. The uncertainty has been great in curbing pretty much all of my spending though. You know, "No point in buying this if the Fulbright goes through..."
  7. I think it widely depends on the country you are going to, I would take my wife and kids. Only info I have found on Germany is the following from the German Fulbright website: Visa Regulations For longer stays in Germany – as with a Fulbright grant – you must obtain a residence permit from a local Foreign Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde) after arriving in Germany. This permit is in lieu of a visa. The Commission will help you with the residence permit and explain matters during the orientation conferences upon arrival in Germany. In other words: You as an American Fulbright grantee can and should enter Germany with just a valid passport. We recommend not applying for a visa in the U.S. If you have family members with non-U.S. passports, please check with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, D.C. (see List of Contacts, Part C), or with the German consulate in your area.
  8. I have an affiliation with Goethe in Frankfurt. I also pushed pretty firmly for the language training. I am really hopeful, I've wanted to research in Germany for a while and a couple things fell into place this year with Goethe. I agree, "you only live once" and this will be worth it if it works out.
  9. Yep! got the email. I'm in the middle of a big project 6am - midnight every day so I didn't see the email till late last night.
  10. Thanks for the info, if selected there will be ALOT of planning to do! I had heard from a student not selected for Germany 2 yrs ago that notification was really slow, but last years info puts me at ease. I second the "This wait is sooooo difficult!"
  11. Hello all, I submitted a proposal for a Fulbright to Germany , I've heard and read selection for the German Fulbright can run into JUNE. I hope final notice is sooner than June..............
