  1. Update: I have been waitlisted. NYU is my top choice program. If you have been accepted and do not plan to accept the offer, I would deeply appreciate you informing the Hebrew & Judaic Studies department as soon as possible.
  2. Has anyone heard back yet? I applied for the joint doctoral program with History.
  3. Did anyone here apply to the Ph.D in Communications at Columbia Journalism School?
  4. Irrelevant to me as I received a rejection, but it's really weird that Wisconsin hasn't sent out acceptances yet.
  5. Update that I was wrong about this. They do have a waitlist. I still think it's very likely I will receive a rejection, but I suppose this gives me a reason to actually check the status change in the portal.
  6. That is potentially very good news for you. Rejections were issued yesterday.
  7. Yeah, the Columbia rejection is coming soon. I don't think they have a waitlist.
  8. The job market is terrible for everyone, but it is not equally terrible for everyone. Still, the reality is that you are unlikely to find permanent academic employment in History no matter your pedigree. A close friend of mine went to Ivy undergrad and a top Ph.D program, and then turned their dissertation into a book for HUP. It was generally well received in the field's journals. They've been jumping from postdoc to VAP for 6 years now. I understand this to be one of the better outcomes.
  9. I could be wrong, but I think the people who resentfully list all their accomplishments in their rejection posts might have inadvertently revealed a toxic personality in their application statements.
  10. So with a rejection from Wisconsin, a de facto rejection from Columbia, and a likely rejection from Johns Hopkins, I am down to three programs. I probably should have applied to many more. I received conflicting advice on that question.
  11. If you applied to Wisconsin, you might have just gotten your wish
  12. Well, looks like it's a no from Columbia (looking at past years, it doesn't appear they have a waitlist).
  13. Oh nice! Omer Bartov is a legend.
  14. Thanks! And I'm sorry you were put through that. NYU really shouldn't be making unfunded offers.
  15. Congrats!! And yes, the process can be pretty arbitrary.
  16. I know the "staggered acceptances" theory is the primary means of denial which takes hold in the gap period between acceptances and rejections, but might that really be the case with Johns Hopkins? I have seen acceptances and rejections (and form ones, not POI messages) reported but it's been radio silence for me since interviewing.
  17. Historically, this is a huge week for results. Good luck to all!
  18. Hopkins acceptance was just posted in Results. Haven't gotten anything. This is going to be a rough year
  19. Has anyone heard anything from Johns Hopkins for History (not History of Medicine)?
  20. I wouldn’t call it a scam, but it is obviously a cash cow for the university. Some candidates undoubtedly do go on to Ph.D programs. Depending on which MA it is, I would inquire with former students about their experiences. An MA program that allows you to take courses and seminars alongside Ph.D students could be worth doing. A program where you mainly take special MA ‘proseminars’ usually taught by untenured or clinical faculty is not worth going into debt for. I almost enrolled in an Ivy MA before contacting faculty of interest and being bluntly told that they only accepted Ph.D students in their classes.
  21. It really depends on which program and subfield. Many departments, especially larger ones which receive 300+ applications, have no communication until the decision. In some subfields, there are faculty members who reach out to applicants and others who don't. Unless you know for a fact that your POI has been reaching to other applicants, I wouldn't draw any conclusions from silence.
  22. Probably won't affect it this year. They weren't planning on using that money right away—it was to be invested.
  23. Departments do whatever they want. When it comes to informal acceptances, it's usually at the discretion of the POI or the DGS. When it comes to formal communications from the graduate school, it seems the most common practice is to send out acceptances, waitlists, and rejections in that order over a certain period of time.
  24. I applied to Wisconsin for History and now I'm resigned to this being my first rejection of the season. I did not receive a request for official transcripts, as reported in results.
  25. Looks like UVA just sent out their acceptances and waitlist notices. I didn't apply there, but good luck to those who did!
