Chances for admission to HGSE online Ed.M?
KellyKat replied to Autumnlunaa1013's topic in Education Forums
We have a very even split. We also have people in non-profits and other fields who think the degree would make sense for them. There isn't really a magic formula in OEL I think they look for people who will help enhance the experience for everyone and bring good perspectives to the group. -

Hi, I am in the OEL program and set to graduate this May. I say go for it, we have a very diverse cohort and that is what makes the program so good. Show them who you are in your application. Show what you have to bring to the cohort and also what you can gain from it. Some people in my co-hort have Ph.Ds degrees (atleast one from Oxford), others are newer teachers but very interesting people, there is a huge spectrum of talent. I would recommend this next year trying for a leadership position, perhaps in a local club or organization, in the union, or sitting on the board of a non-profit. That will help make the work more relevant and look good for your application. -
I heard they did, but it was more gossip, not an official source. HGSE doesn't grant the Ph.Ds for education, they grant the Ed.L.Ds and M.Ed degrees, they coordinate on the Ph.D coursework/ classes, but it is technically through GSAS that grants the degrees.

HGSE 2026

I do not know with 100% certainty, but I highly suspect that is the case for a few reasons. One is that they have always traditionally gone out now. Also, I chatted with one of the heads of one of the Ph.D branches, and I said, "So I know all the interview requests went out Friday, and other candidates got them, but sadly I wasn't chosen, and he didn't disagree or correct me, but instead gave me advice on applying more broadly to more programs next year. Again, not 100% certainty, but it is probable. I have only heard of one late interview in the last 5 years, and I don't know the circumstances. (Note: I wasn't unqualified, so it wasn't like he would say that because I was far off the mark; there were clearly more qualified choices, however, since I didn't get a letter.)

@IrfanKhan The HGSE/GSAS interview notifications went out on Friday (01/23) for all three Ph.D concentrations. I also did not receive one. I cannot speak to the other schools on your list. Master's programs traditionally do not have interviews through HGSE unless they want to check a student's language.

Did anyone here get an interview? I unfortunately did not but I am very privileged that I love my current job, and also a bit bummed.
-
someone on reddit reported getting a CIS interview letter
-
If we don't hear anything by Jan 30 we can email and ask if all the notices have gone out, but doing that this early would read as a bit annoying to them I think.
-
I did not, so either I was wrong about timing or I didn't get invited.
-
I do, but I don't have insider knowledge, so it is just a best guess. In previous years, the interview invites have come over a couple of days, but I have a hunch it will start today! Fingers crossed. Remember, even if they do come out today, we could potentially receive one for a couple of days.
-
Sorry, that was a typo/ autocorrect. It was supposed to say "record number of applications."
-
Nothing here, my new guess is Wednesday because I forgot tomorrow is a holiday. That said, we still could be waiting a while; last year, they got a second number of applications, and I can only see that going up.
-
I think we all on pins and needles right now... so lets add a bit of levitivity. Lets guess the date interview requests will START comming out for the Ph.D program! (I put start because it appears they do sometimes trickle over a few days). My guess is January 19, 2026

Yes I actually emailed them about it and they couldn't override it. It comes from the demographic info near the beginning. I had a pell grant when I was in undergrad so I was waived even though I did my undergrad 20 years ago.

Historically, Master's announcements from HGSE have come on the first Friday of March (but strangely, in 2023 it was Monday). I applied for the Fall 2024 cycle and received my acceptance on March 08, 2024 (Friday). I got mine around noon, but some people got them later in the day. You might have noticed it technically was the second Friday of the month.... so .... it's not a perfect science. You will receive an email telling you to check the portal. The year I went in 2024, it was said that if you got in, the email said that, and if you didn't, it had you check the portal. That was NOT TRUE for me. I almost didn't check because I was so sure I was denied, so make sure to actually check, no matter what people tell you. Usually, they don't do interviews for Master's, so when all the Ph.D. candidates are talking about whether they got an interview or not, don't freak out. That is for the Ph.D. The Ph.D results will come out before yours, so don't let that throw you off either. I am on this board because I am hoping to pursue a Ph.D.! I love the master's program I did, but it was OEL, so there is a big difference (same date for acceptance letters, though). The programs tend to be at different times of the day, but all on the same day for HGSE Masters.
