I was wondering if it was considered rude to reach out to schools to ask for updates or does it hurt your chances in anyway? If people have done it, what is the best way?

Has anyone heard from Harvard or Michigan?

I was wondering if anyone had a sense of which schools tend to ask for interviews/at what point you should give up home if you haven't received a request yet. I'm specifically asking in regard to programs with early/mid December deadlines. Do any schools do multiple rounds of asking for interviews? I have not gone through this process before, and just trying to see if I still have a shot an any of the schools I applied to...
