  1. Congrats on the acceptance. Way to go...
  2. I am in Ed Psych as well. You won't be expected to have any publications before grad school. You will be expected to have some when you go on the job market. Also, you will likely be working in quantitative and qualitative methods.
  3. Re: Your first comment about high quality students- that doesn't really make sense. What makes you think that public schools are going to enroll higher than normal quality students just because you think people are motivated to stay in-state? Re: Adjunct profs, Can they really add adjuncts? Yes, they can and do. This year our department cut three TA-ships and gave them to an adjunct. Much cheaper for them to pay an adjunct part time per hour and let them teach three classes then to pay for the grad student's tuition, stipend, and health benefits. Re: Can they cut grad courses? Yes they sure can. They can cut as many graduate courses as they want. In fact, I'm having trouble finding enough coursework to satisfy my full-time requirement right now. ;-) Not all programs are set up to move the grad students through like a herd of cattle.
  4. I noticed that several days ago.
  5. No. But you should be honest about it with your current advisors/professors. You're going to need their recommendations anyhow.
  6. I'm sure it's just for statistical purposes. They don't call around asking where else you're going to be accepted. They don't have time for that.
  7. Don't bother with these GRE polls. ETS posts distributions on their website- you just have to dig a bit. They even break them down by field. Those are much more accurate than these, which tend to be answered by only bright shining stars.
  8. Not to mention that folks should be filling out the FAFSA and including all prospective schools asap. As soon as W2s start rolling in.
  9. Don't worry; that doesn't mean you're out of running for a fellowship.
  10. Just think- if you're lucky, you'll be checking yourself out on there soon! Ugh...not my favorite thing to do.
  11. what's a peapod?
  12. Just to provide another perspective- I could not live without my car. Housing near campus at my university (within walking distance) is overpriced and low quality- and arguably not all that safe. Additionally, there are several areas of this city with great neighborhoods where the art and music scenes are good, local restaurants, etc. By finding housing outside of the campus area (3-4 miles) and commuting to campus, I have increased my quality of living while keeping costs lower. Public transportation is not always reliable here, so having a car is really useful. On top of that, I'm working a part time job downtown, so commuting is a regular part of life for me. It depends largely on what city/campus you are considering moving to. Many campuses just are not equipped to be commuter friendly. Cars are nuisances in many places. But in other places, life without a car would be very difficult. Having a car in Manhattan or Boston is much more difficult than having one in the midwest or south.
  13. I can't speak for all departments, but in my department assistantships are funded through the department- meaning that they are distributed at our (department's) discretion. I'm not sure of any university-wide assistantships...most are funded through each college or department.
  14. Many schools won't accept students they know they can't fund. In my department, the school tries to divide funding equally among all the full time students. Fellowships are usually dependent on GPA, etc, but assistantships are usually decided along with acceptances.
  15. That's totally ok. No need to edit- I was just giving you a hard time. And thank you for standing by. :-)

  17. I highly recommend gmail. Inbox automatically updates when you get a message.
  18. lol- I know, right? If your first choice is Harvard, etc, something like that you can be pretty sure you'll get a job when you finish. $65k a year sounds pretty steep to me, even for an Ivy. Besides, not offered funding in your first year does not mean you won't get funding in subsequent years. However, I understand the concern. If I had to turn down a first choice for another one with more money, I'd likely do it.
  19. Some people might find this useful to consider: The faculty in my department are waiting to hear about some large grants which will allow them to fund several graduate students next year. The granting institutions (NIH, NSF) haven't released the results yet, and they have recently found out why. Many of these places are waiting to see what Obama does with the budget after he is sworn in before they make grant decisions. That could mean in some cases that admissions decisions are delayed, pending grant decisions. Know what I mean?
  20. I personally don't think wearing black pants and a button down shirt could be considered over or underdressed. Business casual, I'd say.
  21. That's not even close to what it takes. I have plenty of students who come to class on time and don't throw temper tantrums, even many who have earned A's in my class. That does not mean I think they could handle doctoral-level work, or in particular, research. Those are the kinds of questions admissions committees are interested in.
  22. You guys give them way too much credit. Not only do they not care how many times you log in, they do not bother keeping track of something so ridiculous. They have lives, people! They are employed as faculty in a university! Does anyone know how much work this entails??? This admissions business is such a tiny piece of their responsibilities...
  23. well, honestly, if there was no place for it on the application, then I doubt you're the only one who made this mistake.
  24. If the program required one, and you just submitted it today, why can't you just send it to the department? I don't see why they would not accept it.
