Pol Sci 2024-25 / Waitlisted Candidates
01anonymous replied to OP4599's topic in Political Science Forum
I think that’s absolutely right. I think ultimately the kindest, ethical thing to do is reject other offers once you accept somewhere. However, in this particular case they also said that atleast in the last three years people have let them know by 14 April at the latest because certain faculty remain in touch with students till they send their decision so they know more or less if you are accepting. Irrespective, if you accept somewhere reject your other offers. I rejected an offer last week because I knew someone who was on the waitlist for funding. So it really does matter. I don’t agree with anyone who says that others rejecting does not matter because the school literally told me that, that is what they are waiting for! -

Hi, So they didn't tell me anything in numbers. I am the World Politics one, so still waiting. I honestly don't know anything about the yield. They said they can't make any offers after 15 April, so they will let us know by then if not sooner. They will also let us know if the waitlist closes or something else. -

Hi guys, The school I am waitlisted at told me they can't make offers after 15 April, so the last day I will hear back one way or another is 15 April, and so we are exactly two weeks out from my decision. Pray for me please! They also told me a significant number of people should have rejected + there should be seats in my subfield for me to make it. -

Guys how are we feeling? I know admit days are mostly done by next week, so if we are meant to go somewhere we should hear soon! I am really praying they can tell us sooner rather than later one way or another. The rescinding offers is really scaring me a lot. Everyday a different university, a different department. In the meanwhile, I am thinking of accepting an offer by Monday/Tuesday. Also, does anyone know how many people out of those who attend admit day actually accept on an average? -
I just saw that UMich is rescinding offers for unaccepted seats in their Biomedical Sciences Program and it's really worrying me! Should we panic accept, at our second best options even if we are waiting for our waitlists to come through? If you go to the reddit thread call r/gradadmission, it's the one titled "UMich Rescinding unaccepted offers" !!!!!

Hi, I know the UMich one is 20-22 March so it will be done this weekend! I am on the WL and hoping to hear more this coming week or the first week of April. Honestly, I am praying that people will reject their offers by next week if they attend the admit day and decide not to go to UMich. Would really help us in these uncertain times. I am planning to reject one of mine that I am not going to attend by next week as well - which I hope will help others get their offers.

This is heartbreaking to hear for me. I really need my waitlist to work out. I am so sorry, I hope you have a place of your choice to go to! -

I reached out yesterday, and they said they have no updates yet. This was the Graduate Program Coordinator. I am expecting more things to move post the admit day and honestly only by the first week of April. -

Hi Omkar, I was waiting for someone else to take a jab at this because of knowing quite little and being on the same boat as everyone else here, but here's my take - I think, at this point, it depends on how soon other people reject their offers. Say over 50 percent of people reject their offers post admit day or by the first week of April, they might move to the waitlist sooner than anticipated and probably have a decision before 15 April. However, for a lot of schools, people may hold their offers till the last minute and sometimes not even reject them until 15 April when the schools assume an automatic rejection. I think the wait could really vary from school to school and department to department. What worries me more, is the funding cuts, which are causing schools to admit less and less people which might mean that they may not move to waitlists and that is kind of scary. -
My cycle is officially over today! I got two interviews, two final acceptances, and one waitlist involving 4 different schools! Made 10 applications total! I hope I get in off the waitlist, but otherwise, I am definitely going to grad school this year for a PhD! Excited. Congratulations to all and I hope your wait ends soon with good news!

Second this! Please always choose a funded offer! It's really not worth going into debt for!

Saw the same about the University of Michigan just now. I am wondering if they just put the date wrong or were actually accepted off the waitlist (seems early for this). The comment just says '123' for reference. -
Hi, I just saw an acceptance from the University of Michigan - did you receive it today, or did you accept it today? For context, I am waitlisted and eager to know more if possible.

10,000? Just for graduate programs? That sounds insane. Is that across all fields in the university? Even then, it seems high.

From what I know, schools have admitted like 20-25 people even where they are expecting 8-12 students to accept. A 50 percent attrition is always a given for schools I think. The question about if they go by subfield or not, varies from school to school. The program that I know of has admitted almost 4 people per subfield (6 subfields here) and has 1 person each on the waitlist that I know of. So if there is at least like a 50 percent attrition with more people not having accepted, that's when the waitlist will come into play. But yes, the odds are really weird - basically they are expecting like 2/5 people per subfield to accept which is a small number. -

From my understanding, in some schools, they will wait for between 50-25 percent attrition, before they move to the waitlist. If they hope to accept only like 50% then they may not even move to the waitlist. Remember, each school is different. -
From my understanding, the guaranteed funding is only like 2-3 years and then you sort of depend on your guide for their funds, grants and other awards you find yourself. I did apply for it as one of my back up schools to be very honest. Now that I got into different public schools I will stick with them. Guaranteed funding for 5 years is definitely very important.

No, it was just one of the schools I applied to. I have other more traditionally academic programs I got into, so I would be choosing one of those. But yes, policy is of interest too at the moment.

Are there any people here who have applied to Tufts? That is my last pending application.

I have a general question about whether schools would disclose the actual number of candidates on a waitlist and actual acceptances sent out? How to ask for this information? Who would know? -
