  1. Thanks A-Murphy! I have been wroking really hard at my current institution, getting involved in research, hopefully publishing at least two papers soon. My weakest point is the GRE. I do not have time to study fro the GRE until June, when I am done with my Masters. I will be applying this December, so I can devote a considerable amount of time to the GRE. You are right about the 1200 score. That is the score that I am aiming towards, but I don't know if I can reach it, especially with the new GRE test. It sucks that the GRE matters to them so much, when they know it doesnt measure didly-squat!!!!!!

  2. I was wait listed at UMaryland, but ultimately rejected. I did, however, get into UAlbany, which is where I currently go.

    My stats:

GPA: 3.4 overall; both majors: 3.8

    GRE: 1250

I had 3 pretty good letters of recommendation; lots of research experience. I was directly out of undergrad, no publications, but a pretty solid writing sample. My SOP, the way I structured it, probably really appealed to the admissions committee, which makes sense now that I know the admissions committee personally.

My biggest pieces of advice: 1) tailor your SOP towards research. They're interested in making researchers more so than teachers. 2) Emphasize all and any research experience that you can; it means a LOT. 3) What you want to study within CJ means a lot less than showing that you can think critically about what you want to study, and why you want to study it (originally, I wanted to do international systems. I'm currently looking at gender in a number of projects).

If you have any other questions, I'm more than happy to answer them with my own experiences, to the best of my ability. However, like I said, my caveat is that I did NOT end up getting into Maryland. To be honest, though, most of my applications were tailored towards Albany. It was my top choice school from the time I was 20 years old, and I never felt I was going to be a great fit at Maryland. Regardless, I can try and help as best I can.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will most definately tailor my SOP to research, because thats what I want to do. Teaching wont get me tenure.

I have visited Albany in the past and was impressed by their academics. Although somewhat dismayed at their small library. Their faculty was really friendly and the students loved the school. However, some key people that i was interested in will be leaving soon :( When I was there, I got the feeling that they were in competition with Maryland.

    My current stats are:

    Undergrad GPA 3.6 (top 60)

    Grad GPA 3.9 (JJAY)

1 publication in a communications journal

7 Conference presentations (ASC, ASA, APA)

1 Publication in a CJ journal in the works

    Hopefully publish my Master's thesis

My main concer is my GRE. When I took it out of undergrad I got a 900. The GRE is the main reason why I didn't apply this year. I hope I can bring it up, when I study again. I would be really upset if my GRE score holds me back from some amazing schools like ALBANY and Maryland.

  3. Rachaelski: NOOOOO ! As I said to Albanski give it another shot next year!

I think this is was my last year. The next time I will apply is when I am in a doctoral program...

Its sad, but I am really relieved. I hated those months waiting for the final word. Now I can move on and properly prepare for the future. I wish you all luck! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

    Later!

  4. Im not bummed out as I thought I would be. I am actually relieved that I got rejected now. Being rejected in April sucks. At least now, I can plan appropriately. Like my momma says "Hey, at least you tried!"

  5. I emailed my advisor this morning letting her know that the application decisions were going to be sent out early and that she will know ahead of time. I also asked her to email me if she heard anything, good or bad. This is what she wrote:

"I will be in touch soon" (@ 6:50AM)

The whole day didn't write anything to me. Im definately thinking I am out of the running. I am tired of being rejected by the Fulbright people. My topics are always too sensitive. All they want are people who will look at the country's culture, its never about any real social issues or conducting social science research.

  6. Ok people here are some hints.

In 2009, I received my email at 9:21AM (New York Time)

The subject of the letter was Your Fulbright Applications.

The letter contained the following info:

    Dear Albanski,

I am pleased to inform you that the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education (IIE) has recommended you for a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the academic year 2009-10. Your application has been forwarded to the supervising agency abroad for final review. In addition, your application will be forwarded to the program sponsor, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, for transmittal to the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). The FSB makes final decisions on Fulbright awards.

This letter is not notification of a grant since the number of recommended candidates exceeds the number of awards available. If you are selected for an award the supervising agency overseas will inform you of your status. If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE. For further information about the next stage in the selection process, go to the website:

    https://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/apply/FAQ_Final_Steps.pdf

Since selection is a lengthy process, the final decision may not be made before the end of June. In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there are factors that could preclude your accepting the grant. Receipt of a grant is contingent upon: (a) approval by the FSB; (B) concurrence by the supervising agency abroad; © medical and research clearances; (d) security factors in the country of your application; and, (e) availability of funds.

Congratulations on your success in the preliminary stages of the competition.

    Sincerely yours,

Theresa Granza, Director, U.S. Student Programs

  7. Just remember that when you pass the 1st stage you are sent to the host country in order from most qualified to least qualified. Some countries (the smaller ones) just approve what the US ranks, whereas other countries that have their Fulbright board may deviate. I don't know if the Program Manager can tell you your rank tho..

  8. However, for the ETA it is different. I know some people who were not selected for their primary country in the 2nd stage were offered a place in another country. The larger countries such as the UK tend to draft 2x of 1st stage people.

  9. I can't find this info on the website... Does anyone know roughly how many finalists there are relative to the number of grants given?

It is always 1.5 the number of grant awarded. So for three grants, they will most likely select 4-5

  10. No, Fulbright is going to notify us by email. Counselors got an email that said "E-mails will be sent to all applicants notifying them of their application status by the end of the day on January 21st."

They lied on the website...YOU SEE I WAS RIGHT..THAT OFFICE LOVES FRIDAYS!

  11. Its wierd, but a part of me wants to get a rejection...I hate to go through what I went through in 2009. I was selected as an Alternate on April 27th. I wanted until June 1st, hoping and praying every day. From february 1st to June 1st was hell. The worst part is that they called me in the end of May and were 85% sure they would offer me an ETA position, but they money never came through. BE PREPARED FOR A LONG JOURNEY IF YOU GET THE GREEN LIGHT TUESDAY!
