  1. can someone do me a favor tomorrow and called rachel holskin and ask about Albania. I have called her at least 10 times, and I am scared she knows myvoice. I would appreciate it if anyone could find out. I called yesterday and she said this week or next week, BUT THATS WHAT SHE ALWAYS SAYS. In return I will call a program officer for a non-European country.

  2. This is a good idea to pass the time, but to also learn about each other.

Why dont we post our country:

    Affiliation:

    Proposal:

    I'll start

    Country: Albania

Affiliation: University of Tirana Department of Public Health, Marin Barletti University

Proposal: Understanding Marital Violence Differences in Urban and Rural Albania (qualitative analysis)

  3. Two weeks, becomes two months! I've been hearing 2 weeks since the 1st week of march! Im just so furious that this is taking so long, that I really dont care if i get it or not, I just want a piece of paper in my mailbox to put this to rest!

  4. I really don't think they're nice. I think that they get really mad when you call, and get annoyed. I feel like screaming and being like, "well you try to wait for 7 months and see how often you would call me." It would seriously suck to be an alternate, i'd rather be flat out rejected!

  5. I am seriously losing my patience...I am tired of calling Fulbright and recieving the same reply "it should come in two weeks" Seriously at this point if the U.S and the Host country have made their decisions, they should be able to tell you if you made the cut or not. However, they always give the excuse that they are waiting for funding information. Honestly, at this time, I'd rather be told I didnt get it than to wait a couple of more weeks. My life is literally on hold because of this, because many jobs that I have applied to have a one year commitment. In other words, I have been out of a job for three months waiting for fulbright and it just isnt fair. I realize that it's prestigious, but come on! I'll take the train to their offices and help them mail stuff out and the best part is that I'll do it for free!!!!!!!!

  6. can someone clarify how alternates work. Do all people who do not get an award become alternate. If you really think about it, it makes sense that those that do not get the award become alteratives. Let me explain this theory further.

IF country Y has 4 finalists for 2 spots, they will grant 2 awards and 2 alternatives. However the alternatives are ranked in case only 1 awardee decides to withdraw. In case both of them withdraw, both alternates will become awardees.

This should be right, but someone should confirm this theory by calling one of the program managers and asking them how this process works. I have a feeling that this may not be the case in countries with a high volume of applications such as German, UK, and France

  7. hey all,

I believe that the next 2 weeks is going to be the final stretch for fulbright (especially for europe). I called Europe manager and they said next week Albania should be ready to go and that the rest of european countries will be send out. I keep praying. I have a question, lets say country X only granst 2 awards and 4 people have been recommended. When they send out award letters do they send 2 awards and 2 alternates or 2 awards, 1 alternate and 1 rejection?

  8. I feel that the wait is incredibly long. I try to find ways to pass the time, but people always come up asking me if I got the Fulbright, so that definately does not help. I expect that some people may hear news this Friday-Monday. Thats what you can count on that every Friday-Monday good and bad news will be delivered. However the important question is, is it going to be yours?

  9. This process is way too long. Most of what happens with decisions is sort of a secret. I mean your advisor knows but not much. Im happy for the people that have recieved their decisions whether it was good or bad, because it provided closure.

I called Europe advisor again and she confirmed what she had been saying all along, letters for Europe are ONLY mailed out on Wednesdays. I guess I have to wait till next week, or the week after that, or the week after that....on and on....

Good luck guys, make sure you post acceptances and rejections, its the only way other people will know that news is coming!

  10. well I called Rachel Holskin monday and I asked her about the Fulbright to Albania, and she said she was waiting on the final approval. I asked her when should I expect something in the mail and she said that they ONLY mail out acceptances fo Europe on Wednesdays. She clarified further that if they agree lets say Friday they still wait till next wednesday. If you look at my previous posts I included a postage calcuator that you can use to estimate when the envelope will come, depending on your proximity to NYC. Since people who live in NY, NJ, CT, VT live fairly close and if decisions have been made they should expect something within today or tomorrow. However, if nothing comes, the best best is always thursday and friday (AGAIN DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION BETWEEN NYC AND WHERE YOU LIVE) I am so anxious, I can't even study for the GRE. I will be so devestated if I get rejected, because all of my eggs and even my loan deferements are in the Fulbright Basket.

Why doesn't everybody list all the countries that they've applied.

    I'll Start

    Albania (Europe)

  11. let me explain the process to my understanding:

for example country Y only hands out 2 fulbrights a year and this year 50 people apply

IEE sends out 4 applicants to country Y

Country Y selects 2 out of the 4

IEE in NY sends letter of admissions or rejections.

They send more than 2 because the country has to make a decision as well, since the U.S has had the priveledge of cutting down the applicant size. It should also be noted that some years more grants are given. From what I heard additional grants can sometimes be awarded to countries, that is why you see the change in the number of grants during the years. let me clarify this point better for you. Lets say the Balkan region hands out 25 awards a year and raditionally albania and macedonia each recieve 2. However in this peculiar year macedonia only gets 1 applicant, and albania gets 53 applicants. What happens as a result is that Albania is given a third award because macedonia has not used it. This only happens in regions not wolrdwide. So that is why in some cases the managers are saying that they are confirming budgeting, because some countries may be getting more awards.

I hope this has been helpful to all of you

  12. I think those that have applied to Europe will recieve some information the next week. I mean it looks good. I really think that what the program manager for europe said was true that for Europe they mail out acceptances on Wednesdays

This is a good website to calculate the day best to check your email. http://postcalc.usps.gov/ just type in regular envelop and put your zip code and their zipcode is 10017

I was bored one day and I thought this might be a good way to pass the time.

I wish everyone the best of luck, since I kno that this is a anxious time!

  13. i don't personally know anyone that applied to Greece but I would recommend calling IIE Program Manager: Rachel Holskin

212-984-5326 and asking her if Greece has made their decisions and when should you expect a letter of admission or rejection. She is really helpful and would give you the best information. Only some countries hold interviews, usually the countries that have a lot of applicants like the U.K and Germany.

    I hope this is helpful!

  14. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL::::

I spoke with someone at Fulbright comission and they said they sent out letters on Wednesdays only. I do not know if this might be of help to anyone, but i hope it does. Good luck to all of you!

  15. im still waiting since they told me that the acceptances should be mailed by the end of the month, it is so furstrating to wait. Unfortunately I was rejected from all the PhD programs that I applied to, but if I was accpedted to a PhD program and a Fulbright at the same time, I would definately defer. This is a once in lifetime opportunity!

For the people that got accepted how did the envelope look, thin or thick, what did it contain?

    good luck to all!

  16. given this economy. the fulbright will be my escape. I really hope I get it because I've been praying really hard. I think that for the people who are curious about their countries, they should look at this website

    http://uoip.ucdavis.edu/documents/Fulbr ... 009_10.pdf

You can contact the officers in your area region and MAKE SURE you aks them who is the program officer for that specific country and you contact them. One you contact them, you can usually ask them questions like "has the country made their decisions yet" or "when can I expect a decision to be made." I hope all of us get it so we can do our amazing research, but in the meantime all we can do is pray.

  17. I applied for a fulbright to Albania and was notified that I am a finalist, but am anxiously awaiting word that I have won. They say that once you are selected as finalist, a person has a 50% chance. What many finalists don't know is that when the applications are recommended is that the applications are numbered from highest recomendation to lowest. Some countries make their own decision, but then I could see some countries just confirming what the U.S wants. I called the people who work at fulbright, and yes you can contact them. They are really nice and helpful, and they will let you know if the countries have made their decisions yet. I know that my advisor did not want me to contact them, but i did anyway, and learned alot from asking questions. I think they might even let you know if you got it over the phone if you let them know that you have other decisions pending due to the decision from Fulbright. Finally, i think the fulbright process is too long and the wait has given me much angina. I wish everyone the best and I think this forum shoudl be stronger so we could give each other emotional support, because we call need it!
