I know this is a pretty buried topic but i thought i should refresh it because there is so much discussion going on on the NLP thread. Hoping someone can add to the conversation here .
  4. Quite a few UNC-CH admits on the survey
  5. hey paritosh.. i'm guessing your from india?

  6. Now that you put it that way, i'm interested in seeing what he has to say too!
  7. hey newms congrats on your admits.. mind linking your profile?

  8. In my opinion, the size of the research group is upto you. Are you a highly socially motivated person or do you hate crowds?
  9. Well, i'm actually reasoning this out for the first time and i'd say that it's a lot of factors: - I want to leave a legacy and what better way is there to do that than by adding to mankind's knowledge - My interests are terribly varied - I dislike the notion of working a 9-5 desk job programming someone else's ideas. - dad is a PhD(tho he left academics after that) and sister's a doctor so i want the doc tag too - i like the thrill of solving very tough problems(research) - other than as a researcher, i can see myself only as a video game designer or an engine programmer for video games that would be my backup plan i guess as it involves graphics as well
  10. Anything that is new knowledge is research. Whether the paper gets published is dependant on the quality of your work. What does your thesis fit under. Find out the relevant conference/journal(http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/assourav/crank.htm) and see how people present their work there. Check if your work is upto the mark. Condense your work to the main points and present it well. Then send it in and pray hard ... All the best.
  11. I'v always been lead to believe that mpii is a very good institute. I think that for a prospective phd student it's the poi who matters not the ranking of the place. If MPII has a lot of siggraph papers then i guess you can let your worries rest as that indicates the quality of research going on there. In the end, it isn't rankings thats going to matter to recruitment committees at academia or at a company but the amount of research you have done. Rankings are only a rough indicator of quality not the absolute.
  12. Please add your profiles below along with where you got in. Would be very helpful to us, who will come later:D Format(for your convenience) Age: Applying directly after bachelors or after working: Applied to: Got in at: Rejected by: Graduated from: Masters or PhD: Gpa: GRE: Toefl(if international): Field of interest: Research qualifications: other qualifications:
  13. I think you should go for the campus visit and network with people. It would be useful. And when you do decline their offer, someone else will get your seat. It's a win-win for both of you:D. BTW, congratulations on all your admissions:D
  14. My two cents. take with a pinch of salt: are you interested in working with any one professor at school2? is there a person whose work is along the same line as your interests? if so, you needn't shift for it isn't about the college but about the individuals you work with. if you cannot identify any such person then you might want to apply elsewhere. but the academic community is close-knit so professors will talk. so you should offend anyone and you shouldn't put it across to them that you perceive their institution as inferior etc. Also, if there is nobody with remotely similar interests as you, i'm quite sure that the professors themselves will be able to advise about what to do. why don't you also ask some professors from school1? I don't know anything about fellowships, so i will leave it to someone else to help you there.

  19. Congrats pepsi and deadwing..
  20. I have finally decided that i am interested in graphics and would like to work in the field. I looked around the forum for a list of universities where there is a lot of work going on in this field but cldn't find anything of the sort. So why don't we put down a list for future reference here of interesting places where good work is going on in graphics. Or if you guys know of any external links where such a list already exists, do post the link. Btw, i'm interested in rendering side of things. i will be taking my first course in cg this semester. I realised i am interested in cg while i did some preliminary reading of the text for the course. Could you guys also list the conferences and journals in the field so that i can browse them for interesting papers? I only know of siggraph and ieee-tvcg. (i am relying on the web for everything as my university isnt a research university(those barely exist in india other than the iits)). What are you interested in? Working on something?
  21. @ujjawal: please create a separate post about this thank you. what your discussing has not to do with the topic of the discussion. creating your own post will increase the no of people who will look at it and thus you may get more answers.
  22. looks like no1's in a very talkative mood. and not a lot of graphics people either eh?
  23. Well your general profile seems good enough for getting into ms at most of those colleges you mentioned. You should easily be able to get into 4 5 7 and 9. dont waste your time wit 8. not worth it as even the industry has a hard time understanding how to treat digipen grads. why not look at The GuildHall at smu? if your interested in game dev, understand that it doesnt pay as well as regular software eng jobs. but if that is your interest, the satisfaction is insane. i suggest you read articles on gamasutra.com and gamedev.net. both very useful sites. wishing you all the best amogh
  24. As the description reads, anyone considering applying? I am but i'm totally stuck on the essays section because i just can't answer the question asking me to describe a goal i'd set for myself in the past year. Frankly, i don't think i'v really set anything other than to get in shape. haven't really achieved that either.. hehe.. Which leads me to the question, what goal have you set for yourself in the past year? and did you achieve it?
