  1. Do that.. it's always good to network. and now that admissions season has come to an end profs might just be more willing to talk to you. and giving them a heads up that you will be there at some time in the future is a good way of showing that you'r interested in their work. just make sure to mail them all your final plans just before you set off so they can make some time to talk to you. Nice profile btw.
  2. Why don't you call them and clarify. Will save you a lot of tension and probably be a lot more useful than posting here .. When in doubt Call them, it's always the best thing to do. Could have been some mess up in their internal system.
  3. Well i am quite sure you have heard of the grass is greener on the other side syndrome. That is exactly what is happening when people say mscs students are treated worse than phd students. Talk to a phd student and he/she'll say the exact opposite. so dont worry about that. Each place is what you make of it.
  4. From what i gathered in the other thread, Columbia is really good for vision. No idea on UCSD. I'll let someone else comment on that
  5. Do call/mail them. or better yet do both. they should have decisions for you by now! Don't worry it's highly unlikely to affect decisions. Just be nice and polite and you'll have no issues. all the best
  6. I think you should decide based on fit, where you find more people working on what you are specifically interested in.
  7. Ah i think what you don't see( no offense to any of you girls on this forum) is that unlike open-minded people like you, there are a large number of girls out there who are interested in computer science, attend one or two classes find not too many other girls around(hey i didnt say girls shouldnt be in cs. its just a 'thing' that most girls dont like cs) and get discouraged and leave for something else.
  8. Well, i guess i was wrong about osu.. sorry my bad. UNC is miles ahead in my area of interest(CG)
  9. Just thought i should throw in my own 2 cents, umass and unc ch are anyday leagues ahead of emory case western, ohio and pitt in comp sci. check the microsoft academic search if you want and you won't see those places even figure on the radar whereas unc is very high up for cg and cs in general.
  10. Taking a very blind guess here but id saying imperial college but thats as i said an uninformed decision based on the fact the imperial college is quite prestigious
  11. Hey erm no.. I'm still in my junior year
  12. remember that is an average not an ultimatum.. you could choose to go the thesis route and always take a bit longer why not? if you start working on some research project while there, you can stay around and finish up even after you finish your MS. nobody will stop you. and if you are concerned about the cost of it, im quite sure you will be paid a stipend for your research work as long as profs are impressed with your work.
  13. Hey fangsout, from what i gather, pending grant status could also be a placeholder meaning that come here let us see how you perform and then decide. dont worry about it simply because you might even change your advisor after going there and UNC is known to fund almost 70% of its graduate students(that includes MS students remember) and is really reputed for gpu and graphics work..
  14. Since you are in this predicament, you must make a decision and inform them about. On the other hand, why don't you contact someone in the dept, and tell them of your situation and ask them what the dept policies are.
  15. Thank you very much man. I honestly didnt know that they would actually accept people for short term internships.. One small thing tho, will there be like a call-for-ras thing i should look out for, or should i just contact a professor i would like to work with? could someone give me some examples to get started on.? I'm interested in graphics btw.
  16. You'v answered your dilemma yourself .. just let it sink in
  17. Alright guys, thanks a lot for your input. I realised that there'r more hurdles than answers lol. The only prof in CG at IISC is willing to take people to work with him for more than 9 months but he's more into scientific visualisation! :C.. The only other people working in CG in India are in IITB under VIGIL and both of them refuse to work with people not form IITB.. ugh.. i was wondering if these profs will hire non iitb people for RA after i graduate.. should probably mail them and find out. .. hmmm.. the other route involving MS and then PhD seems quite expensive and thats why i am hesitant as i would have to take a loan for an unfunded MS in the USA.. I'm kinda biased against an MS at an IIT as i feel entirely disillusioned about education over here after 3 almost entirely useless years in VTU.. Am i wrong? given some of you are from iit, care to comment?
  18. Thanks for your input guys..
  19. see you'v answered your question yourself on a side note, i was wondering if i should take the ms-phd route or the direct phd route cos i come from a university in india that not too many of the top colleges would care to be familiar with. it's a good university down here but not a research uni so very unknown to the world. your comments on why you chose to go the ms-phd route?
  20. Software engineering is the study of the process of building a large software whereas computer science is the broad term encompassing everything from ai, graphics, theory, systems, software engineering, networks etc.
  21. instead of choosing based on prestige why dont you take a look at their department sites and see where there'r more no. of active people doing things in the specific subfield you like. or decide based on group size as is your preference. bcos in all its your work that really counts. prestige comes in a distant second

    Graphics

Exactly. And actually, the thinness is justified because well graphics depends on both hardware and mathematical research right?
  23. Hey frenzy which college in india you from?
