Hi friends! Since I am already in the mindset that I will have to apply next year (waiting on Brown and non-fully funded acceptances from NYU, which I could not afford anyways), I wanted to ask some advice. This year I submitted two heavily workshopped short stories, which were evidently unsuccessful. After I was done with my applications, I started working on a novel (my second), which is set in my current work context - the high fashion industry! I am deeply absorbed in it as of right now, and could not imagine shifting my focus back onto short stories. From what I've heard, it is best for application purposes to submit short stories instead of novel excerpts. And I understand why. If I were to follow this approach for next season, I would like to start working on my samples now, so that I can have time to let them breathe and workshop them thoroughly. But then again, my head is in my novel. I'm debating to apply again with the first three chapters of my novel, but since it spans the course of twenty years, and by chapter three one of the main characters isn't even introduced yet, I'm worried the admissions committees cannot fully grasp the thematic line of the plot in its entirety. Any advice is welcome! Thank you ❤️

I work for a big fashion house, and finding time to write is very hard. At least, being immersed in this crazy world has given me inspiration for a novel! But I plan to quit soon to pursue something else, less "glamorous", that gives me the chance to spend more time doing what I love. Currently at 0A/1W/3R/1P, feeling demotivated to write and unhopeful for the future.

I'm currently waitlisted at vanderbilt (no way that's gonna happen) and pending on NYU and Brown. Should've applied to more schools but I got so overwhelmed with the process so... for next year lol

Hi there, you are not alone! I am too straight out of undergrad (graduated this July) and exhausted myself with applications while working 12-hour days in the fashion industry. I also have 0A/1W/2R/2P so we're in the same boat! The way I try to think of it is that since we're so young, we have still so much to experience of the world to write about, in the future. So even if that means we don't get accepted we can just live another year or too before fully immersing ourselves in the academic lifestyle - which, I expect, will be primarily about writing. Praying the best for you!

I have a question as a first-time international applicant with no idea how the application review process works. does each school have in mind the "type" of candidate they are looking for? is it about genre, style, or anything like that? does it depend on the school? genuinely wondering how much of my rejections is due to "not being a right fit" vs "my writing sucks"

do you think they're going one by one updating the portals? or maybe they just single out the acceptances? nvm I was denied lol

I am beyond happy - but don't want to get ahead of myself for now. I don't know what my placement is on my waitlist and i honestly could not imagine someone declining their acceptance to vanderbilt... yes fiction! I come from Italy, so it will be somewhat an improvement for me lol

Could not have said it any better! I feel like the whole application process, albeit exhausting, taught us a little bit more about ourselves and our identities as writers. Also - literature and poetry are so subjective to personal taste that there is no point in pulling our hairs out trying to figure out what we could've done differently!

honestly same. I applied to only five of the best schools because I come from Europe and cannot imagine completely uprooting my life if it's not 100% worth it. not sure how I will go about the second round... the sole thought makes me queasy. this time I submitted only short stories so I think I will go for a novel excerpt on my second attempt. my SOPs were strong for the two schools for which I was extremely passionate (Brown and NYU) whilst the rest were just okay. I think I just have to get used to the idea of living in a town that is not my cup of tea and apply to more schools!
