  1. Yeah, the deadline was January 15th. I'll give it another week before I try to contact them
  2. UW-Madison's department doesn't offer a Ph.D. I haven't heard anything yet -- I'm getting very anxious! Congratulations to everyone who has heard good news!
  3. If you guys are on Firefox, you should add the WebMail add-on. I use it to show me when I have new email and it sits in the corner by the loading bar or by the navigation bar, so it doesn't take up any room. I added a .wav file sound that makes me happy so I get doubly excited when I get a new email and I don't have to be at my computer to notice that I have a new email. Don't do it if you get spam/junk to that inbox though, otherwise it will make you more moody. I set up my gmail so that messages from certain people/companies don't show up read so that I don't have to get excited over nothing and I have other inboxes for other business.
  4. I plan to answer this question honestly, but not fully. I'm applying to seven programs, but I might only mention two or three others that share equal strengths. If I had to answer which was my number one choice, I would spin the question and talk about research instead. Something like: "My number one priority is to strengthen my background in [some specialization] and programs such as [the one one you're interviewing with] are particularly strong in this area. For example, I love [this specific aspect about your program and the work that this professor is doing]. I look forward to doing [that sort of work] here. No, it doesn't answer the question, but you didn't have to lie either.
  5. Yeah, I need to stay off of the results page. Someone posted an interview from one of the other programs I'm applying to, but I swear that program doesn't even do interviews! There's no history of them anywhere else I can see... I want to shout TROLL! but it's also wishful thinking since I haven't heard anything from this program yet. I'm more willing to talk more specifically about my research interests and other programs via PM. Good luck everyone!
  6. I applied to Wisconsin's Masters program. This is the only Women's Studies program I applied to, but my commitment to feminist analysis in all aspects of my research is unyielding. I casually looked at some programs in Women's Studies and Wisconsin's program is an unusually strong fit for me. All my materials are in, but the deadline was January 15th and there are only two reports (rejections) on the survey page so I'm not too positive when I'll hear back (maybe early March?). I would love to attend this program, but I *have* to receive some kind of funding (which is unlikely). ETA: Never mind, I just looked it back up on the results page. An early March rejection last year and an early February acceptance in 2008. Still not much to go by. Get me off of this site!
  7. $732 for seven programs (3 MA, 4 PhD), about $105 per school GRE: $160 (birthday present) + $23 for one extra score report (two didn't require scores) Transcripts: $50 (from two institutions and two that I applied to didn't require official ones) App fees: $496 (3 @ $225 was my Christmas present, $271 of my own money) Postal: $3, since two schools required I mail in my app in addition to online So, I didn't get any real birthday or Christmas presents from the family, but saving $385 was worth it.
  8. Best: The Embark platform is my favorite! Next, ApplyYourself, but it falls behind because of the random username they give you for your login. My favorite school specific platform is definitely Wisconsin's! So easy, especially if you're applying to multiple programs (I'm not, but I could tell). Cheaper app fee ($56), easy navigation, no annoying extras... The trick is, you have to pay extra close attention to program-specific requirements. Worst: I hated Michigan's! It was pretty simple, but you had to page through the entire thing (much like it seems Stanford's must have been). I thought Indiana's was great before I realized it was one of my only ones that emailed the recommendation links after you submit your app.
  9. You might be able to change the quality that your scanner scans at under options of some sort. I have a simpler option though - Can you access your transcripts online? What I do is go to the online transcript, go to File>Save, then I save it as an HTML and then copy/paste it into a word document and convert it to a pdf. If it looks clean, you might not have to convert it to pdf, but it definitely won't pass your space limit. If all else fails, take it to FedEx and see what they can do.
  10. Mine says this in the header: Name (left edge) School/Department (in the middle) page _ of _ (right edge) I think it looks pretty neat and useful.
  11. It's pretty simple in my opinion -- don't apply to a program that you wouldn't attend if it's the only one you're accepted to.
  12. I always call my professor by her name, but when I hadtp write a letter for her, she was strictly Professor X. Even when professors write recommendations, they [often] refer to their students as Ms./Mr. X. It just sounds more professional and it's not like it will hurt anything.
