  1. Actually, I have a quick question. Which is the more 'prestigious' award - SSHRC Doctoral or SSHRC CGS? I realize Doctoral is more $$, but the benefit is that it can last for up to 48 months, whereas CGS is only 3 years. Thoughts?

CGS is more prestigious and more lucrative (3*$35,000=$105,000 vs 4*$20,000=$80,000)

  2. Does anyone know why we are only seeing CGS results (with the exception of those in C category)? What's happening with the four year awards?

    Mine wasn't a CGS

  3. Received (positive) news yesterday in Mississauga (I had SSHRC communications sent directly to my parents so I didn't have to wait for things to come all the way to the US of A; learned my lesson last year!)

    20.7/30

    Field: Education

    Studying in the US

Wait listed twice, so third time's a charm!

  4. Just heard that my friend (Carleton U) received her rejection letter last week for PhD sshrc. Just wondering if anyone else has heard anything.

I don't think this can be right. In the past, acceptance and rejection letters have been sent out at the same time, and no one else has heard anything.

  5. Hi everyone! I applied for the AAUW fellowship as well and just tried to check my status. The main page just has my name and address, the name of the fellowship, and something that says "test completed" under the next/options header. Where should I be looking? Thanks!

About a week ago they changed the page that lets you check your status. Maybe applications are under review?

  6. Recommended - which just means they have all my docs. There a legend link to the left of the word status that's not obvious and easy to miss. They haven't even reviewed it yet! Otherwise it would say "recommended and reviewed". Anyway I emailed them with a question and basically results will be emailed on the 15th as well as posted on their website, don't think you'll find out any earlier than that.

Thank you! I hadn't seen the link :)

If you search this forum, last year some people indicated that they stayed "recommended" on April 15th. Neither of them received the scholarship, so I was curious as to if/when everyone's status starting changing to "recommended and reviewed"

  7. Hi I applied, pretty sure it's a generic April 15th date for hearing back. I got my own postcard from them to acknowledge they received my application.

Have either of you checked your online application? What does your status say?

  8. Anyone applying directly to SSHRC (i.e. not currently in University) for PhD? Hear anything yet?

    Not hopeful....

Last year I got a letter at the beginning of March, indicating that I'd made it to the second round of the competition. They will send a letter in March either way, so we'll all hear something soon.

  9. Thanks for the info. That makes things very difficult then. Difficulty is just a part of the long hard academic road.

For what it's worth, I was able to negotiate with schools to not provide a response until I heard back from SSHRC.

  10. Does anyone have an idea of when the Docotoral awards are announced? I think I'm going to be in the position of choosing between a funded admission at a good school and a partly funded admission at a great school, both of whom will want to know my decision before April.

We definitely won't hear by the end of March. End of April is possible

  11. Did you send it through USPS, or FedEX/UPS? If it's the latter, you should at least have proof from the company that it was signed for in Ottawa. If it's the former, that's much tougher.

Like StrangeLight, I got a confirmation email on Nov 16th.

  12. To me, it'd be strange if they 're-mixed' the subcommittees, as it would defeat the purpose of their existence in the first place. I imagine they exist because each group's ratings will be different from other subcomittees, but consistent within them. That is, if one group gave higher marks than another, mixing them up totally screws over #1 on the alternate's list of a sub-committee that had a 16.5 compared to my 17.9, or perhaps the case where someone 3rd on a list with a 18.2 screws me over.

At least I'm hoping they didn't reshuffle.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that they didn't consolidate the waitlist, for the reasons you listed above. Also, based on my experience last year, subcommittee alternate lists were never consolidated.

  13. I'm not waiting on a decline, I'm waiting on one acceptance, but I see your point. I know there are two Vanier winners in my subgroup, but I don't know exactly who they are.

Oops, accept, right. What we DON'T want them to do is decline :P

  14. Just because I'm still slightly neurotic about this whole thing, I checked the Vanier list and found at least one (perhaps two) economics winners, and they're listed at Canadian universities, so unlike the earlier CGS list boondaggle, they most likely accepted the award and are holding it. That should mean I'm in (and perhaps SpaceJump is too, in his category) but they haven't budged that list yet. Terribly frustrating, to say the least, but nothing new.

I think I'll move my e-mails up to friday afternoon, bi-weekly.

(Also, Royksopp is excellent writing music, and not just for car insurance commericals)

Based on my understanding, this is not necessarily true. There are 5 types of selection committees for the SSHRC doctoral awards: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/apply-demande/background-renseignements/doctoral_committees-comites_doctorat-eng.aspx. Within each of these categories, there are several smaller committees, made up of at least 1 faculty member from each of the disciplines. Thus, you could be waiting for someone in law, business, polisci, etc to decline a Vanier, and those 2 economics Vaniers could have been in other subcommittees than you.

  15. ?

so, people like me who can't even think of how to market their project as at all related to business... I guess we have very little chance

Not at all. The business SSHRC funding was a one-time thing last year. Someone posted some links about this earlier.

(And for the sake of argument, my project was about learning disabilities in young children and somehow got funded through this initiative)

  16. ps: According to last year's thread, lots of people were bumped up from NOTHING to CGS... But there weren't any reports of people going from the regular waitlist to a regular SSHRC. Does this mean that only those who qualify for CGS have hope of being bumped up? (i.e. those of us NOT in first-year PhD)

    thoughts?

I think this may have been people who were waitlisted in the regular competition, and then were later awarded the special business SSHRCs. That's what happened to me, at least.

  17. Talked to Michelle St-Pierre yesterday, and she said that there has been no 'official' movement on the waitlists yet (I think she meant regular waitlists) because after the accept/decline deadline in June, there is a secret deadline of July 7th where they take until then to call winners to find out why they haven't replied yet. Then there are still a couple days past that deadline where they keep trying. There are a few people still unaccounted for. She said that movement should start in the next two weeks, and if I haven't heard anything in a few weeks to e-mail/call her again. By the sounds of it, the 'second rounders' so to speak, might be released as early as next week, or as late as end of July. Still, that's not that long of a wait, either way.

    Thanks for sharing!
