  1. Does anyone know who my wife should contact in lieu of FGS, when the time comes; she applied nationally, since she is not currently in school...when I did the same, I remember that I received my letter a couple of weeks after everyone in school knew...in our case, this type of delay will really cause some problems re: moving with kids.

PS: I, too, have found this forum much more informative than SSHRC itself. Thanks!

Did she list a Canadian school as her potential school to take up the SSHRC fellowship? If so, she can try contacting the FGS at that school.

  2. The results are out... My application was SUCCESSFUL! YAY!

    Good luck everyone!

ashleyv, are you master's level as well?

  3. Congratulations!!!

This is the MA competition, right? Just wondering if I should start getting my hopes up for the PhD one...

Dood's program says MA history, so I don't think us doctoral folks should get our hopes up for today. HOWEVER, it does seem like they are sticking to their schedule that natalia posted, so we should find out next Monday/Tuesday from our own faculties of graduate studies.

Yippee for some finality and congrats to all the master's folks who "win" a SSHRC!

  4. Yes, I did only apply to Ed.S level programs at Seattle University, and Brooklyn College. Im not really sure what the benefits of getting a Phd in school psych are, other than research opportunities, in which that case Im not really into research. I just want to lean and get certified! Either way, any info would be greatly appreciated. Are there major benefits of applying to a Phd program as opposed to Ed.S? I really dont think I have the GPA or potential GRE scores to do that right of the bat.

I applied at the doctoral level because I wanted to keep the research option open. I have also heard that if you want a leadership position in the field (i.e. something like the director of school psychology for a school district), having a doctorate helps. You are also able to gain licensure in most states to practice as a "psychologist" with your own private practice. If none of these interest you as potential options, it's definitely not worth applying and doing the work for a doctorate.

PM me if you want my stats.

  5. So judging from the posts, the holdup is because of a "new system" for the docs and post-docs? I really don't know what to believe anymore. First it was "near the end of April" now its "late next week" which means mid-May... it can't be that much longer can it? I feel like mid-may will become "near the end of May" and "near the end of May" will become "late in the first week of June" ad infinitum.

    /rant.

My impression is that these new dates that have been given: May 4/5 for masters and May 11/12 for doctoral (through your university's division of graduate studies) are the final dates. All the other dates we've gotten is when one of us emailed/called SSHRC. That email allegedly came from SSHRC and was sent to all Canadian universities. I don't think they'd take it upon themselves to send out such a mass email if the dates were only tentative.

As I've said earlier, I think the hold-up has to do with the Vanier awards. Since this is the first year, I'm sure there was a lot of scrambling re: how to distribute them. I also have a sense, again from that email natalia posted, that the SSHRC admin staff got involved in the Vanier award distribution and perhaps even the planning of that announcement/event that went down in Ottawa last Thursday. All of this is to say that I think that the reason we're waiting is because the staff that normally deals with all of the administrative/paperwork side of things for the SSHRC fellowship competition was busy with other things for a few weeks, delaying the whole show.

I suppose we'll know if they stick to the dates by tomorrow or Tuesday....Master's applicants, please please post as soon as you know!

  6. Guys, as far as I know this new system is for grants for professors. They were supposed to be released in March but they were sent emails in March and the announcement was made by NSERC that they will inform profs in April 17 (3 weeks later) which exactly happened. Validating results have nothing to do with transcripts. I have my undergrad degree from overseas. Since my school does not provide an English transcript, I had to take it to a professional translator and verify it at Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs. Do you think that they would try to reach all these institutions and how do you think they would communicate with them. In my school, these ladies issuing transcript barely speak any foreign language.

More importantly, as thepoorstockinger pointed out, SSHRC couldn't just request transcripts without us giving explicit permission for them to do so.

  7. Looks like Vanier recipients are a dime a dozen at U of T!

    More like $600,000/year a dozen!

In all seriousness, 34 is a very, VERY small portion of the graduate population at UofT. Congratulations!

  8. and so begins another weekend.....

btw, did anyone else notice that the email I posted on the previous page was from Suzanne Bigras, and dood's email was from Gisele Bigras? (I know this is completely meaningless, just trying to kill time and my super-sleuth skills have nothing better to focus on)

  9. On a separate note, can we use SSHRC/OGS funding for non-academic expenses? Since I'm probably going to live with family, I'm giving considerable thought to laser eye surgery...

You can use it for whatever you want. They don't ask for receipts or anything like that.

  10. FYI

I emailed SSHRC this morning to find out when the universities would have access to the list:

    "Hi,

The universities will probably receive the results list next Monday or Tuesday.

    Sincerely,

  11. The contact at my University said she has been checking the secure website everyday and will let me know as soon as she finds out. I guess I will know before I get my letter in the mail.

....and then you'll post here to give everyone the 'heads up'? :D

  12. I talked to someone in my department who received a SSHRC doctoral fellowship last year and she said she heard from the Faculty of Graduate Studies or whatever it is called these days a few days before receiving her letter. She got the e-mail on a Thursday or Friday, and received the letter on Monday. However, she said she knows of people in past years for whom the opposite was the case. So, basically, it might be worth a shot to ask, but knowing my university, they would just ignore the e-mail and send something out when they do the mass notifications.

I happen to have the name & phone number of the appropriate contact at my university. Perhaps you could find the same info? I always find it harder for them to ignore phone calls than emails

  13. So, according to my theory from an earlier post, it's *possible* that the grad studies offices at our respective universities could have access to the results tomorrow. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but plan on calling them in the late afternoon to see if anything is available.

  14. So did they announce those Vanier winners today? I can't see any note of it on sshrc or vanier website.

There's a ceremony in Ottawa this afternoon. I wouldn't hold your breath for any regular SSHRC results today.

  15. Hey, I've been lurking on these boards for a while, but this is my first post. I just got my letter from OGS saying that I was on the reversion list. However, I only applied to one school this year for my phD (U of T). I was pretty confident that I would get in because I had discussed with my MA supervisor my research plans and she was very excited about having me on board. Nevertheless, I was rejected this year. I'm wondering how it was possible that even though I was rejected from the PhD, I still end up on the reversion list. I applied through U of T and had to have been fowarded by my own department, correct? I'm just wondering why they would bother forwarding my application if they knew I wasn't going to attend school in the fall.

Very odd. Did they know that you didn't apply elsewhere?

  16. Weren't there supposed to be some 400 extra Master's CGS awards given out this year because of the budget (albeit to business-related degrees)? How come the total for 09-10 is actually 100+ less awards than last year's? This is very weird.. I have no idea what these SSHRC people are doing..

I thought all this business-related degrees hooplah was in the budget that just came out from Ottawa....which means to me that it would be in place for NEXT YEAR'S SSHRC competition.

  17. I also assume that this is a mistake since there isn't actually a link for it anywhere, just fishing for URLs produces the excel file. I wouldn't be shocked if it was taken down soon.

    There's definitely a link for it: http://www.sshrc.ca/site/winning-recher ... x-eng.aspx

Scroll down to Master's Scholarships, and you'll see 2009-2010.

Alternatively, click "Winning Research" on the side, then "Program Statistics" then "Statistical Tables".
