  1. gtmshine, If RA/TA positions are given to only those PhD students the professors already know, then how are the PhD students the professors don't know supposed to conduct research leading to a PhD? What you said only makes sense if all of the PhD students are known by professors.
  2. Hey guys! I was recently admitted into Stanford PhD program, but I'm on the waitlist for financial aid. I likely won't be able to matriculate if I cannot have some form of compensation for tuition and living expenses. I was reading up on Stanford's RA and TA TAL (tuition allowance) and it SEEMS like if I have a 50% TA or RA for a certain quarter, then the tuition for my department will be completely paid FOR THAT QUARTER. I would then need to maintain the 50% TA/RA for each of the quarters in order to accrue enough TAL to pay for the year's tuition. For those who know or have experience with Stanford's RA/TA TAL system, can you confirm my analysis? Any help would be appreciated, as I would very much like to matriculate to this program.
  3. Yeah, sure. It's on the results page for stanford materials; the only one who said credentials for 2/12/11 (it says added 2/12/11 when I actually added it yesterday... these servers must be somewhere where ~9pm EST 2/11/11 is already 2/12/11) admits. One thing I am concerned about is that I'm on their waitlist to receive financial aid. Does anyone know how bleak (hopeful) my prospects are for actually receiving financial aid? Do they really not fund all of their PhD graduates? Just tuition/fees would be fine for me to accept the offer.
  4. I was just admitted via email to the PhD program at stanford in materials science! I really hope you guys still waiting hear back soon, I was going nuts not knowing.
  5. So there was a wave of rejections to stanford MSE department today as indicated in the results section. However, I was not among them (yet), so there's still hope!
  6. I also applied to Stanford and Berkeley MSE departments, but I haven't heard anything from either of them. On the results section, only a few acceptances from each school has been shown, so I'm not too worried yet.
  7. I heard back yesterday from UIUC. I was admitted with fellowship and RA. Was anyone else waiting on UIUC?
  8. Sure, my stats are as follows: UG University: State's largest land-grant institution (it was free for me to go here due to scholarships) GRE: 790Q/580V/4.5W GPA: 3.9/4.0; I have two degrees in 4 years in physics and mathematics I'm also a goldwater scholar with 4 years of undergraduate research and 3 second author publications in peer-reviewed journals. Every summer I've done REU at my local university. 1 patent pending. 1 statewide business plan competition won ($10k prize)/sold the business to continue with education.
  9. He said that notifications will go out Feb 20th for EE and that I will be contacted after that to visit if I'm admitted.
  10. I've heard back from only Yale and UIUC (both phone interviews, with very likely admittance). I applied to 15 schools, including Stanford and Berkeley as the OP, but I haven't heard anything back from them yet.
  11. I just got off the phone (literally 2 hours ago) with the head of graduate admissions from Yale's EE program. We talked for about 30 minutes about my research and research interests; it was rather technical since he is an expert in a closely related field. I was extremely nervous at the beginning, but I just told him I was nervous and he laughed and said he understood and that he would talk first about why he liked my application. Overall, I got the distinct impression that he was impressed by my application and my previous work, indicating that Yale would pay for me to go to their campus and talk with their EE faculty concerning research topics. Nothing concrete like "You will be admitted with scholarship" or anything was explicitly stated. I would recommend to you to avoid the question about other schools to which you've applied. Since Yale is like #39 in EE graduate programs (I dunno about your field), I think they might not consider you to attend if your application is good enough to get into other, higher ranked, schools. I was honest and told him that I applied to 15 schools and rattled off all of them. I hope it doesn't hurt my chances of admittance due to yield protection. Anyway, hope this helps.
