  1. I'll be attending the University of Aberdeen, Scotland for a PhD in Practical Theology (Ethics) Stats: UG GPA: 3.2 from a Baptist College MA (thesis), MDiv, ThM (thesis) from a Baptist Seminary with a 4.0 in the ThM MA in English (3.93) from a state university A few conference papers presented, one published article, and several published book reviews. Things I would do differently: i took the GRE twice and even took one of those six week long GRE prep classes. Yes, my Quant. score shot up 160 points, but UK schools hardly ever require GRE scores. How ironic. I have been looking at Aberdeen's theology department for about three years, but put it to the wayside because there is little funding opportunities available to international students as compared to doing a PhD in the states. I applied to quite a few programs here in the US, but didn't get any offers with funding from a school I really wanted to attend, so I looked towards the motherland. I think I ended up going 3 for 9 in terms of acceptances and rejections. -If I had to do it over again (which I sincerely hope I do not) I would probably spend more time visiting schools, and designing a statement of purpose around certain professors rather than taking the shotgun approach and sending a similar SoP to most of the programs.
  2. The letter did not come with any mention of funding. I emailed the dept. secretary to see if there were any assistantships available through the philosophy department for MA students, and I am also going to look around for any other assistantships. I haven't decided if I will accept it yet; as the current price is $1,148 per credit hour it does depend a lot on funding. Also, I don't think their MA program is the type where they bring someone in off of a waitlist if an offer is declined because the letter said to respond by May 31st. Hope that helps! Feel free to contact me if you need anything else.
  3. For anyone interested I got an acceptance letter in the mail for the MA in philosophy program on Friday
  4. nothing from fuller yet here
  5. For anyone interested, I got an email from Harvard ThD program saying decisions will be available online Friday at 5 PM, and letters will be mailed next Tuesday.
  6. demondeac: who did you contact at harvard/are they sending letters out? I have not heard anything from them yet.
  7. slight correction: i faxed, not mailed my personal copy of the GRE scores
  8. demondeac: I have also had trouble with the Harvard online app status. I applied to the ThD program in ethics, and my GRE scores are still not showing up ( I had them sent from ETS in mid-December). I talked to whoever it is in the Harvard theology admissions dept., and they asked that I mail my copy of the scores ( This was mid-January). As of last week I emailed them again because the scores were still not showing, and they said by this point in the process they have to move on to MDiv applicants and will do little updating of online status, even if they had received the materials.
  9. I now think that my proposal would have fit better through the seminary, but I applied through the dept. of religion at Princeton.
  10. All of my apps were under some category of ethics, and I have not heard anything yet. Where have you applied?
  11. Etylerbc, Where have you applied for ethics other than ND and BC?
  12. i also applied to theological ethics at BC and haven't heard anything yet
  13. I applied at seven out of a list I made of appx. 15. Your wallet only goes so far!
  14. Well I did a MA and a MDiv in theology, and only applied to one PhD program expecting to get in (and I didn't). So they offered me admittance to a degree called a Master of Theology (ThM) which is a stepping stone degree in which you take doctoral seminars a write a 120 thesis for the degree. A week after finishing the ThM I was married, and my wife a a year left of college, so I decided to wait an extra year before re-applying. I found a MA in English program 20 miles from where a live, my job offered to pay for it, and the school offered to confer the degree for only 21 credit hours since I already had a MA. That is the long and short of it.
  15. I agree with the last writer. I have a friend who got into the PhD program at Edinburgh last spring but he had had to defer for a year because he just can't get any funding.
  16. I've been in academic race horse status since finishing my BA. I went straight into Grad school and am finishing my fourth Master's degree in five years this semester. Just sent off the PhD applications.
  17. Just finished up "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Wilde and am currently reading "Journal of the Plague Year" by DeFor.
  18. Hello everyone. I applied under ethics to all the schools, save one (Purdue) that has a religion and literature program. I did a MA, MDiv and ThM at a Baptist Seminary and am finishing a MA in English at a state school in North Carolina.
  19. I did an MDiv, and stuck around an extra year to do a ThM. I found that extra year to be fruitful academically in preparing for PhD work, and it also helped to build a better resume.
