I don't think there's any harm in visiting....

My vote is for Cambridge, but that's just because I'm an Oxbridge groupie.
-
I'm working through Into Our Own Hands: The Women's Health Movement in the United States, 1969-1990 by Sandra Morgen right now.
-
Yep most certainly was. This one appears to be a little more broken down though.
Here is the old poll:
Whoops! I forgot about that one. I had even voted in it too. Oh well. More data! yay!
-
Kidding. Seriously though, future applicants will know waaaay too much about us.
-
Why not?
I had originally started lower, but it wouldn't let me add any more poll options than this. So apologies to the 3.0 and below crowd (sincerely).

I was so close to applying - only a few days away from my school's internal deadline - but then I got offered full funding at my top choice. So, happily, I didn't apply. Good luck though. JKC is a great program.
-
Charlotte = annoying.

I got in and am debating whether or not it is a good "fit." I have no other offers yet so I'm still very excited. What is your field?
I actually applied to history of science, not the history dept. I do medical history.
-
Good to know I'm in the slacker majority here.
-
I need to conduct interviews AND write two thesis chapters by spring break. Blah. I'm using thegradcafe as a reward. After I analyze a few sources, I get to check the results list.
-
I reread it after I got into my schools. It felt so good.
-
If I get into Harvard, I'm probably not going. I realized after I applied that it's not the best fit.

It's about time we had a thread of our own. I know you're out there, fellow historians of science. Reveal yourselves! I'm really curious as to who posted the other Yale acceptance just now....
-
Try something like this - http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofli ... iving.html - to get a feel for cost of living in the different cities. I'm sure there are international versions somewhere... just google and you'll probably find a ton.
-
Congratulations, that's fantastic news! I'm applying to the History of Science program at Princeton (part of the history department)--are you, by any chance, applying there too?
Nope, sorry. I'm the other history of science person on who_got_in, by the way.

Just got the call from Yale History of Science and Medicine - I'm in! I feel so overwhelmed right now.
-
The Berkeley spam situation makes me so happy. Congratulations to all of you! The school seems to be having email problems. Sociology people are reporting on the board that they can see the addresses of all the other people rejected. I guess that could be comforting in a weird way...

My dad died before I graduated from high school. I'm not a huge fan of my mom... good times.
-
Ouch, Yale. I still haven't heard from History of Sci/Med., but I feel your pain.
-
I'm really interested to see if my programs are willing to pay for my ticket up front, rather than reimburse me. I don't have the money to pay for any sort of plane ticket on my own. Yay 28 dollars in the bank! I don't know how that will work out, but it will be the determining factor in whether or not I visit 2 of my schools.

While it's great that you're asking these sort of questions (you'll be super prepared!) so early, I am also going to chime in and say to wait a bit longer before deciding on PhD apps. Take some upper level history courses, then decide if it's right for you. You never know when/if your interests will change. I started off in my first year convinced I would be in evolutionary biology for the rest of my life. Then I took my first history course in junior year and that changed my mind pretty quickly. I guess what I'm saying is don't close yourself off to new interests so early on.

I always find the University of Pennsilvania posts hilarious/annoying.

Yeah definitely wait it out, especially considering that you sent him a thank you card. Patience. Good luck!
