  1. "Adviser" is the professor who you consult with to plan out your degree. It doesnt always mean you do research for them, but they oversee everything you do, and make suggestions, etc. I'm about 99% sure that sending emails to professors won't give you a bad reputation, if anything: 1) they get to know you and your situation 2) they see you are really interested 3) It makes it easier to call them, or talk in person. I think the Director of Graduate studies is the most important to talk to. Have you had any luck finding funding? I haven't secured anything yet, but I haven't been really active in trying lately...
  2. Has anyone ever secured funding in an RA or TA after being admitted to a program with none? Ive been admitted to a PhD program w/no funding, but the Director of Graduate studies and my adviser are telling me to seek out research positions in the department. Ive been trying for a while, and Im wondering if Im just getting the run-around from these people so I won't leave. My field is biomed engineering btw... Thanks,
  3. What field are you in? I am in the same boat for engineering...When I talked to my adviser, he made it sound as if all PhD students get at least partial support in some way. I have emailed some profs but havent got a response for a week. My plan is to just talk to everyone in my interest area and see. I noticed at my school that there are a lot of adjunct faculty who work in the nearby medical center, so Ill try them if none of the others work. I am also looking at some internships that I could do for fall semester and maybe defer until spring. I think you should talk to your adviser and just directly ask him what your % chance of getting funding is...they are usually pretty understanding about lack of funding being a problem...
  4. I haven't heard a thing outside of "stop asking"... I'm applying for masters in biomed engineering. What % of Masters students get aid?
  5. I really dont think there is any significant difference between a 760 and 800 on the quantitative. Youre talking about getting maybe 2 more geometry/trig level questions right...I cant imagine theyll care a whole lot. Did you highlight your research experience? I.e. your role in projects, responsibility, etc? Thats a lot more important than GRE math
  6. Most of the MS programs I looked at (biomed engineering) have a review during your 2nd year. If you are still in the program by that point, youre doing well enough, so theyll usually admit you to the PhD program. As far as outside your MS school, thatll probably be harder becuase you have to apply again, but you should have great Letters of rec by that point...
  7. still waiting for Brown (MSc Biomedical Engineering); it only took 8 emails for them to reply that I'm still being considered (How rude of me, when their website says we can expect to be notified in February or March...)
  8. Ive heard that M.Eng is more for people looking to go into industry right afterwards...M.S. is more for eventual PhD's
  9. Still no word from UC Irvine, did you guys apply by the Jan 15th deadline or Feb 1st? Also, has anyone heard from Brown Univ Engineering department? God I love checking my email
  10. IF you havent heard anything by now, does that mean getting any kind of assistance is a long shot?
  11. March 27 and I havent heard from 4 schools. Ive been accepted to one, but so far with no aid, so Im asking for another review...The only schools Ive heard back from are the ones I applied to last! I applied to 3 before Jan1st, and still no response...Im sorry, but if you claim to have an admissions committee, they should be held accountable like any other job. That would mean: replying to all applicants w/in the promised time (or at all)! Im sorry for yelling...

  13. I applied for biomed engineering, but it has the same deadline as CS, and still under review... There is a website where you can check, they send it after receiving your app payment.
  14. Hello, I've been accepted for a Phd in biomedical eng, and I'm ecstatic, but they've said they cant offer assistance. I'm not sure what to do, because I want to go, but I cant pay that much for 5-6 yrs for engineering. I am going to ask for a second review, maybe get a new LOR for it? Also, I was wondering if anyone knows how possible it is that you pay your first year, and find funding by the second year? Any help would be very appreciated, Thanks
