USC has offered partial tuition waiver. No funding from UMBC but high chance of full funding from second semester onwards. Also, I like UMBC because of its geographical location (may pharma, biotech, govt institutions in maryland-DC-Penn) and the department's small size (more focus?). Also, UMBC's stats program is within their math department (not sure if its an advantage?). On the other hand, USC's stats dept is bigger and seems to be better managed. Could someone please comment on these two departments? Which one you'd choose and why? Sincerely appreciate your replies/thoughts to help me decide.

Afaik, Ncsu is more applied. If I were you I d go with what suits my interests.. Jobs will come uote name='xruox' timestamp='1302118011' post='240129'] the program @ UFL suits my research interest while the program @ NCSU is too big~~ NCSU has a better location for seeking jobs and higher ranking in stat~~ really hard decision, how do I choose??

Both Univ of Georgia and Univ of South Carolina have accepted me into their PhD stats programs..BUT they havent mentioned a word about funding! After speaking with their admin staff, it looks like funding chances are poor as they have already allocated funds this year. I have been working and have savings but I am debating if it is wise to go to either of these schools with my own money! I am very keen on stats and I'm highly motivated for phd studies, although initially I will focusing on masters level coursework and evaluate myself in an year if I am good enough for research. Which of these schools do you guys recommend? From what I heard, UGA is a bigger school and maybe better known. How reputed and wellknown are their stats departments? I am yet to hear from Texas A&M (MS), Iowa St. (MS), Univ of CA-Davis (Phd) and Univ of Maryland-Baltimore county (Phd). I assume funding would be difficult from these schools too. They might have put me on a weighting list as I have seen a few admits from these schools in the results section (except UMBC). Your comments are highly appreciated. thanks, --TD

interesting..I havent heard from davis yet reg my decision but since they have already admitted 5 students, either I m rejected or they have put me on WL. I havent seen many rejects from davis in feb/march. they probably wait until april and send out official decisions.

sowmya, I think you have applied to good univs...is utd at dallas? rutgers is a little high in ranking compared to utd. did u consider univ of maryland-baltimore, michigan state etc.? I am in the same boat as you ... just waiting to hear from univs -s

I don't think it will work against you 'cos you haven't done bachelors in stats. If I were you I'd probably re-take gre to improve my quant score. I too have a bachelors in engg. and my gre is 490v, 780q with some stats related exp. and a masters degree in stats related field. I too have applied to MS in tamu, iowa st and phd at uc davis. Havent heard from these yet.

Congrats! did you receive an email from UC Davis indicating your status or did you have to contact them? I haven't heard from them yet except an email from (pete scully) during 3rd week of Feb saying that my application is complete and I should hear a decision sometime during winter term! Looks like they have already made offers for phd. Weird that they indicate my application is complete so late as I sent all my application docs well in advance!

guys..anyone heard from udavis, uga, tamu or ncsu yet? if accepted mind sharing your profile? i have a reject from ufl, uminn and accepted by south carolina. 780q/500v/3.5w, top tier undergrad and grad schools (not stats though), working for several yrs in quantitative fields and not much of stats related research exp.

Congratulations on your admits! Which unrelated field have you applied to? I am surprised that you were rejected from the stats programs! My stats are not as stellar as yours (esp GPA and test scores). I have been working in a stats related field though with some heavy programming and I went to some top-tier schools both for undergrad and grad but I have no research papers to my credit. I am waiting on a few other schools and most certainly I will be able to go back to school only if I have funding (guess it ll hurt me a little to eat into my saving and 401k!)

My first admit came through last week - univ of south carolina, phd stats program ..BUT, the letter said they won't be able to offer me funding Is anyone familiar with SC's stats dept? Can I hope for funding once I go there in Aug, incase I decide to go? Is it advisable to start talking to them and may be professors there to try and negotiate i.e., market myself to see if they have any funding left? thanks!

thanks. you sure have some very strong points going for you on your application there and a well deserved admission!

Congratulations on your admission into CMU! Can I ask whats your undergrad major? Do you have a masters and if yes, whats the major? Have you applied for the Phd of MS program? Any research experience? Is it mandatory? thanks!

Anyone heard from ncsu, tamu or iowa st (all MS) yet? any idea about these programs or when they typically send out decisions? Also, is it advisable to contact faculty before they make decisions?
