  1. Thanks Bactrian! I have been offered a full scholarship for the course, which makes MAPSS look very tempting right now. My only concern is that I've heard (on gradcafe and elsewhere on the internet) that the MAPSS class size is really big and thus does not lean itself to a lot of faculty attention. I am doing my BA at a top 10 university, comparable to UChicago in reputation, but my academic and thesis advisors are all very helpful and devoted despite of their busy schedules. I work very closely and have meaningful relationships with them and would prefer to experience something similar during my MA year. What do you think of this concern? I hold another MA offer from a top English university where they guarantee one-on-one supervisor... the down side is that I won't hear back on funding from this school until April. In addition, once you have graduated, do the MAPSS people continue to help you with your apps? (i.e. proofreading, giving suggestions, writing letters....) Good luck with your interview, and hope to hear your thoughts!
  2. They released the decisions today. Anyone plans on going?
  3. Try MAPSS (UChicago), from what I've heard they offer about half of admitted applicants some kind of funding (1/3, 2/3 and full tuition).
  4. Hello all, Hope everyone has been enjoying the holiday so far. I have a question about transcript and course numbers. I am doing my BA at a a top 10 private school in the US. While at other institutions, undergraduate courses are numbered 100-400 and graduate courses 500 and above (to the best of my understanding), my university up until this Fall (2012) number undergraduate courses from 1 to 199, and graduate courses 200 to 399. They switched to the new system recently. Thus someone who doesn't read the small denotation on the transcript about the old vs. new numbering system (a very small sentence, I might add) might be confused and think that I only took introductory courses up until Spring 2012, and then suddenly skipped to 300 and 400 level courses for this semester. My question is, is the concern above valid? Should I personally contact the adcoms at every school I'm applying to just to tell them about this (some applications don't have room/space for me to explain)? My school is a big research university, very well-known, and probably have sent thousands to grad school. Thanks!
  5. That's really cool! I'm from Vietnam, but I have been going to college in the States, and looking to go to Europe for my MA for a change.
  6. I find the two links below quite useful. But again, like I said, it depends on your professional goals. I think each SOP is special in its own way, but they should generally follow the same guideline and structure. http://www.gatewayabroad.com/download/sop_guidelines.pdf http://ic.daad.de/imperia/md/content/islamabad/letter_of_motivation.pdf Lud, are you from Thailand? Fellow SEA person here
  7. I think it really depends on your future goals. Being someone set on going into academia, I focused my SOP on my research experience and relevant classes, as well as possible Master's thesis topics based on past interests. Also touched on the course offerings and faculty at IHEID and how they would help me advance academically. I imagine for someone wanting to have a professional career, they might have to restructure the SOP a bit. But I don't see any reason to not talk about your past experiences. I would even argue that they are more important than future interests (i.e. things that haven't happened and might change). Dividing it up half and half sounds perfectly reasonable. Good luck!
  8. Good luck to everyone! I'm applying to the Anthropology & Sociology of Development program, also early decision.
  9. Thanks a lot for the wonderful advices - especially in regards to the personal statement component. I am an international undergraduate student currently studying at an U.S. college, and am planning to apply for either Fall 2012 or 2013 admissions. How much importance would the admission committee place on the GPA of an applicant coming fresh out of undergraduate level? Will 3.7-3.8 do it, or do they want applicants with higher grades? My writing wasn't that good when I first came to the U.S. - I ended up getting a few A- s in history courses during the first two years.
