I've lived in Chicago for the past year without a car and it's been very easy to get around. A car is definitely not necessary. However, one way commutes are often at least one hour. I'm personally buying a car this summer, but that has nothing to do with SSA or field placements!
Just got accepted via postal mail to University of Chicago's SSA Masters program. It was dated the 18th, and postmarked the 21st. They awarded me a $22,000 scholarship. Good luck to everyone still waiting!
I haven't heard from Chicago/SSA. I applied early decision for MSW, and we're supposed to be notified by tomorrow. Not feeling so good about this anymore!
