@ebihal I got that too and it was just to set up a UCInetID. You'll need your student ID in order to set it up and I had a confusing conversation over the phone about trying to retrieve my student ID. You'll probably need to call and make sure to tell them you're a grad student trying to retrieve your student id. The person over the phone was obviously annoyed with all the phone calls from undergraduate applicants so make sure you say you're applying to the MFA program.

@clarita - Do you happen to know more about the RA schools and their reputation in London? I noticed that they nominated Tracey Emin as their painting and drawing professor for this year and wanted to get a sense of how serious the program is. I also am a bit confused on how the academicians are included in the program and to what extent is their interaction with the students in the program.

Thanks losemygrip for the encouragement but a lot of it IS the luck of the draw in that these highly competitive programs are looking for criteria that fit a well rounded group of graduates that can contribute to each other's experience. So much of graduate school is having a diverse group contributing to the curriculum with the guidance of the faculty. Most of the graduates organize with the faculty the list of visiting lecturers so each person has to provide a unique and fresh perspective so that everything is balanced. Even having a solid application with outstanding work may not be the winning ticket. I do think that waiting after undergrad is a really great experience for those that decide to do so. :-) It's certainly not easy to find that momentum or routine in "making money," finding time for studio work, continuing to be inspired and curious, in addition to keeping yourself informed on what is happening locally and globally in the arts. I have met many graduates from top schools who decide to not continue practicing because they weren't able to transition into the working world. Some of them ended up leaving the industry all-together and others are teaching but haven't continued making work. I almost feel like those that didn't have the luxury to end up with positions that have career potential but were scrubbing floors/wiping tables so-to-speak found much more urgency to figure out a way to create value in themselves through their practice. I think that kind of sacrifice and sense of urgency really builds a confidence in practice which is invaluable. Also, know that this application process for grad school is really the beginning to many other apps if not the same as applying to residencies, and commissions. LOL After this comes numerous applications for grants, fellowships, public projects, you name it! It's funny, I was talking to another doctorate student and we laughed about how we thought that applying to grad school/her doctorate program would be the last of this painful process but no no no...the fun only begins after having graduated. Cheers to all of us on that same path!!!

Thanks Outwest! I don't mind if I have to do this multiple times. I think that over the years, I've built up a thick skin that not getting into a grad program won't do a number on me. I do think that this forum is great and it would be beneficial if schools did utilize this site to their advantage. They could really cut down the amount of emails that they receive from their applicants. I also think that the more informed the applicants are, the better the applicant pool will be. It's always great to find ways to raise the bar for everyone. So for all you guests or edu administrators.... ;)

Ugh, I hope those with the power that be think so too! @OutWest - Personally, I don't believe in settling and if I have to do this all over again, then I'll be a regular on here. I had a list of 15 schools initially, but considering that I've been out of school for a bit and still maintaining a solid practice, it makes more sense to just apply to the schools that I'd be completely invested in and happy with getting accepted. Waiting doesn't harm anyone and actually over the past few years, it has really strengthened my endurance and helped me realize that I have to do this and there is no turning back (with or without grad school). I still have those moments when I think, "damn, I should have gone into computer engineering or some lucrative industry," but I guess the more sacrifices you make to continue practicing art, the more you can't live giving it up and feeling like the biggest loser for making all those choices in vain. Well...lol...I'm only speaking for myself and I think waiting ain't too bad if they don't throw me a bone! But...c'mon throw me a.... freakin bone!!!!!

There have been so many people who tell me that with every year, the competition keeps getting stiffer in terms of applying to grad school. I've already had more than six people tell me to not feel disappointed if I may need to apply again next year. :-( How many of you are reapplying?

Here are some photos of the school. Like the program, the school is actually pretty small and intimate. If you're not familiar with Los Angeles, you should also keep in mind that one DOES need a vehicle since it will be very difficult to rely on public transportation (unless your work is non-object based). Considering that the area surrounding USC is pretty sketchy, I really think women should make sure they do have a vehicle. Just thought I'd share some of my thoughts about USC since I'm out here. Also, for those planning to apply to UCLA, the graduate studios are away from the main campus in Culver City which is safer than the area near USC. Regardless, I cannot emphasize how important having a vehicle is in LA. Life without a vehicle will present many more obstacles. Good luck! What about the Design/Media Arts department at UCLA. I know a couple people who came out of that program that sounds like what you're doing. Jennifer Steinkamp also teaches in there and her work is amazing.

Did anyone fill out the Diversity Fellowship or any part of the Fellowship section on the UC school application? I noticed it was the same for UCI and UCLA.

USC uses slideroom and Yale uses something similar as well.

Do you guys have any ideas on gifts for recommenders? I'm having a tough time figuring out how I can thank them without just sending them a card.
