I've always heard that schools that generally only take students they can fund (NYU, GWU, etc.) tend to narrow the applicants down to a semi finalists list, interview them (via phone usually) to see how articulate/socially adroit they are and to get a feel of how well they can communicate their research goals, etc. and then meet a second time to make the final cuts. Otherwise I feel that faculty will more likely call one of your LOR writers, especially if they're friends/conference buddies.

Some schools only let you apply x times. Columbia, for example, has a limit of 3 consecutive years.

A friend who is applying said that Duke is starting to notify, FYI.

I sent a short email a few days after the deadline at each school letting them know my application was in and encouraging them to contact me if they had any questions about myself and my interest in the program, but I can see how contacting professors waaaay after the deadline could be interpreted as grasping at straws.

I got a call from a faculty member wanting to set up a phone interview on FRIDAY AT 7:30 PM, from his office phone! I guess they're working overtime on these apps However, now I'm waiting for him to call again so we can have our little chat. He's supposed to call sometime after 5 and it's 6:54! This is worse than dating...

I'm working on a traditional half sleeve, but I've heard there are great places for trad work in Austin. I got that same letter at work and was all kinds of worked up about it before I opened the email, those jerks. Although I've heard that a few of the faculty have been calling around and asking recommenders about candidates. I'm looking to do paleoanthropology, btw.

So here's some news: 1. GWU is making calls for interviews. They've narrowed it down to less than a dozen semifinalists. 2. UF met this week to review apps. 3. Emory has already set up interviews. Hope this helps someone!

Touche, Dubya. By that rubric you can probably guess which specialty I'm interested in as well. Although I'm sure I have little to no idea where the good cultural schools are...

I'm coming out of undergrad with a BA and a BS, but I've got a considerable amount of fieldwork/research under my belt. Most of the programs I'm applying to are PhD, but I'm applying to 3 MA programs as well because: A) One is in a non-anthropology discipline, but ultimately related to what I want to study One won't let me apply for the doctoral program straight out of undergrad C) One department lost my paperwork and I missed PhD consideration because of it (DEATH :twisted: ) Oh, I'm physical BTW.

thanks sunshine6, you too! it's nice to have someone else to wait it out with. what's your sub-discipline? i'm physical. you wouldn't happen to know of any good tattoo shops in austin? i might be visiting (pleasure, not business) in the next month or so. i heard (kind of, extremely vague) about funding at one of my schools, but not admissions? seems a little backwards to me, but at this point i'm over analyzing everything.

ooh, me too! applying to 9. 2 MA, 7 PhD. my last app was due today and i'm officially freaking out. it's good to see other anthro folks are alive on this board!
