  1. I'm only going to have Internet. I don't watch much TV, and all the shows I watch can be watched online (legally, I mean). I got a second monitor instead of a TV to make multitasking easier.
  2. I'm going to get $18K, and current students in my department have told me that it's enough to live on.
  3. Me! I'm going for musicology. I visited on Monday and felt really good about it, but I waited until today to accept just in case I had an unexpected change of heart.
  4. Well, I've decided to accept at UNC. I visited on Monday and really liked it, and also, it's the only school to have offered me full funding (I thought I would have heard about that from Michigan by now, but I haven't - it doesn't matter, because I liked UNC better anyway). I still haven't heard anything from Boston U., but I'm tired of waiting (and if it takes them this long to do everything, I wouldn't want to go there anyway). Have any of the rest of you made your decisions yet?
  5. I've got two visits scheduled - one this weekend and one in a couple weeks. I'm still waiting to hear from two schools, but I think I'd only want to visit one of them if I got in. That's the only local school I applied to, so visiting wouldn't be difficult.
  6. Yes. Edit: I don't know if it was there before I was accepted, because I managed to lock myself out of the website for a couple months.
  7. I was told about funding for McGill in my acceptance letter; unfortunately, it's not enough for me to consider going there unless the other schools I got into give me no money at all.

    Bethlehem, PA

I had friends at Moravian College who cycled everywhere, but that's the other side of the river, where it's flatter. I made it through four years living there without a car, but I basically never went anywhere besides my dorm and the music building, and I have no knowledge of how things are like over where Lehigh is. They're opening a casino soon (Google tells me May-ish) on part of the old Bethlehem Steel site; I don't know how that'll change things.
  9. None, but one of them is in an early-music ensemble that has a page.
  10. I'm in at three (out of five) so far; I think I'm only going to visit two of them, because the other one isn't offering me a good enough funding package. I haven't heard about funding for the other two yet, so if they both give me even less money, I might start considering the third school again. Of the two I haven't heard from yet, the one I would be most likely to consider if I get in is only about half an hour away, so visiting would be pretty easy.
  11. There's another acceptance listed for U. of Michigan PhD musicology - who is it?
  12. That's me, only I might be jumping the gun a little. I got a call on Thursday saying they'd "recommended me for admission," which doesn't sound particularly official, but in the rest of the (brief) conversation, she made it sound like I was in, and I didn't think to ask (I wasn't expecting to hear from anyone for another month or so, so the call caught me off guard). I updated the results listing and then thought "wait, am I actually in or not?" I guess I'll find out eventually! I definitely have been accepted to U. of Michigan, though, even though they're apparently missing one of my LORs (the one from my advisor, surprisingly - I know he submitted it, so I don't think the problem is on his end, but I'm just surprised that they took me without it). That phone call came about ten minutes before the UNC one; it felt pretty surreal. In a good way, of course! Edit 2-2-09: Just got an official acceptance letter from UNC.
  13. I was regretting only applying to five, but I got two acceptances yesterday (phone calls within ten minutes of each other - I worried that I was dreaming!), so it's going to turn out fine (as long as someone gives me money).
  14. I'm taking a year in between (I hope it's just one year, anyway!) - I graduated from college last May.
  15. Only five (three MA, two PhD). I had a list of eight, then took four off because it turned out there was no one there who shares my research interests. I replaced them with four other schools, then realized the structure of three of the programs was completely wrong for me, so that left five.
  16. I think more people get high scores on the quantitative - my 770 was something like 88th percentile, and my 700 verbal was 97th.
  17. I'm a terrible driver and would really rather not own a car for a number of reasons. Three of the schools I'm applying to are in cities where I'm sure I could survive without a car; the other two would be more difficult but maybe not impossible. I guess if I end up going to the school where it would be the hardest to live without a car, I'll reconsider and maybe take some driving lessons.
  18. 2 acceptances, one with funding and one without 3 rejections That would make deciding where to go pretty simple, at least...! Now I'm having "why did I only apply to five schools??" panic time. Aghghgh.
  19. Musicology here. I'm applying to the MA programs at Boston U., UNC-Chapel Hill, and McGill; and the PhD programs at UPenn and U. of Michigan. My undergrad degree is in music composition, but my Honors thesis was history-related, and I tried to emphasize that in my applications. My GRE writing score was disappointing too; I hope it doesn't affect my applications too much. I think my writing samples are pretty good, so maybe they'll overlook it.
