  1. Congrats! What is your area?
  2. The suspense is killer! If you look at last year's results, a couple of people got e-mails. And then about 5 days later there were 50+ rejections sent.
  3. I see you got in too! Congrats, mav3rick! See you in March?
  4. Haha, no. I would say the real "applicants of the year" don't waste their time on gradcafe I'm actually systems software and hardware-software interaction, but I got lumped with architecture at most schools. It tends to be arch profs doing the research that interests me.
  5. Congrats, PCP! See you on March 15?
  6. That's all I was going off of... isn't everyone on gradcafe?
  7. That was me this time. It's weird that they didn't send out a whole batch.
  8. Hi Everyone, I'll be starting a CS PhD program in the fall, which I expect to last 5 or 6 years. Because of this long term commitment in one place, I would like to include my fiancee in the decision process (she'll be stuck there too!). The way CS works is that they invite admitted students to visit (rather than interview) and pay for flight, hotel, etc. What are people's opinions on bringing guests out? Obviously the transportation would be on my dime. I figure she can get to know the city/area and see how she likes it while I'm busy with the visit events. Also, what are people's opinions on bringing guests to the evening dinners/parties? Is this kosher or taboo? Thanks for your opinions!
  9. CSE @ UMich is still in the middle of notifications. I was meeting with a prof today (not about admissions) and another prof walked in and handed him three applicant folders for him to contact and invite to visit. So, don't worry yet. I'm keeping the identity and areas of specialization anonymous, so please don't ask.
  10. I know ahhh. I had four UCB interviews, too! I know of someone else who had CS interviews but hasn't heard anything. I'm guessing these are all people on the EE side. I'm pretty sure the admissions are handled separately, as they are at most schools. I hope we hear soon :-/
  11. Congrats to everyone who has heard from Berkeley. May I ask if you're EE or CS?
  12. Smoking is gross. Good for you! Hopefully you'll be happily rewarded when you start hearing from places!
  13. Haha, yeah. Mostly from the National and Western Name Exchanges, though. I got a huge prospective application packet from USC a few weeks ago saying "As a McNair Scholar, bla bla...." Only one problem: I am not and have never been a McNair Scholar. Fix your databases, people. I've also gotten tons of e-mail from public health and life sciences related programs... even though I clearly checked the boxes for engineering and computer science. I learned back in high school during APs/SATs not to sign up for those horrible services. Such a waste of mail from (northern|southern|eastern|western) (state here) university. It's not like any of the programs I was interested in ever contacted me...
  14. I love this thread Good way to stay positive while biting my nails waiting...
  15. As an undergrad at UMich, I can tell you that ECE and CSE division admissions are handled separately. I know a professor on the CSE admissions committee who said they had a loooong meeting on Friday (yesterday). I think those decisions will be sent out soon... not sure if any of the notifications have been CSE or just ECE.
  16. Naw, I think it was a pretty standard question. The criteria you use to decide between schools does reflect on you as an applicant. Say for instance, if you're only interested in weather and women... Wish I'd been ready for the question, though. I just got a phone call/e-mail from a fourth Berkeley professor... eesh! This time I was ready for the questions
  17. I just had an interview with a potential advisor at Berkeley... I have another one on Saturday, too. We mostly just discussed his research interests, my research interests, what would make me go to Berkeley over other top schools. That's been pretty typical so far. Useful information for all Berkeley EECS applicants is that he said the committee will be making final decisions in another 1 to 2 weeks.
  18. That's really not enough information to answer your question :?:. If there's anything I've been learning about this process is that there are about 10,000 factors. At least half of those are out of your hands... you never know unless you try!
  19. I haven't gotten anything from CalTech yet... was that from a professor or the admissions people? As far as inviting international students, the US doesn't require visas for travel (long-term is obviously a different story) from a whole list of countries (i.e., western Europe). If you happen to be coming from one of these countries and they're paying your expenses, why not? Sounds like that isn't the case here, though. Best of luck on the interview!
  20. Yes, the CS Department PhD (http://www.csd.cs.cmu.edu/education/phd/).
  21. Yes, my point was that programs other than CSD PhD have NOT necessarily started admitting yet. The CSD open house for admitted students is at the end of Feb, which explains the early timeline this year. They said we had to book flights by Feb 5.
  22. It's definitely not over yet. From the acceptance e-mail: "(If you have applied to more than one program within the School of Computer Science, their decisions may still be pending.)" I'm not sure who posted that all the CSD decisions have been made, either. Care to share where you got that?
