is it bad if i haven't heard back yet? not sure what to make of it, seeing as accepts/rejects seem to have already been sent out
-
Rejections are available on the site. At least, mine was =(. Time to kick some academic ass wherever I end up.

Haven't heard anything yet. Blah.

Does anyone know if the MIT results are legitimate or not? They seem to be coming in at around the correct date, but none of the comments are remotely insightful and they seem to be coming in far too quickly (I know my first action after getting the email isn't to go on thegradcafe to put a contentless result).

Got rejected. Oh well, I wasn't super thrilled of moving to the northern West Coast anyway. If I fly across the country, there better be good weather =).

I don't want to be too public about it, but I'll send you a PM.

I applied to both straight CS and Machine Learning. The phone call didn't really differentiate between the two in terms of which one I got accepted to (not sure if there's any difference at this point?), but I was told that I could pick an advisor from either now that I'm in.

Got a call from CMU earlier and apparently I'm in . May you all get your phone calls shortly!

Can one view applicant statistics on this site? -
Strangely, I doubt it's a systemic problem, as Department X at University A is one of the most popular program/university combinations in the sciences, and I haven't seen other such posts here. My best guess is that my application got messed up somehow (possibly because I submitted the application less than 2 hours before the deadline?). I think I'll contact the department head just to ask for advice if I don't get a response by the end of today. It's beginning to get really frustrating, as just getting this application in by the deadline was a reasonably major struggle (with all of the other things going on in the Fall semester) and now, over a month later, the application (apparently) hasn't even been touched. Thanks for the help so far, everyone. I appreciate you taking your time.

I'm going to keep names of universities/departments anonymous so to not tarnish any reputations here. Over a month ago, I applied to some well known University A, hoping to apply for some Program X. Unfortunately, due to a bug in their application system, it did not allow me to select Program X as my intended major (it said that the application period for that program had ended, which was not true at the time), so I sent in my application by selecting Program Y instead (I emailed them about the issue when it cropped up, but they couldn't get back to me before the application was actually due, so I decided it's better to send in something). I sent the admissions department of Program X an email detailing the situation, and they, after clarifying some details, said that they'll try to rectify the problem. A week after, I sent an email simply asking for a status update, and got an automatic email that their department will be closed until early January. Fine. Fast forward to early January: their given phone line doesn't work, and the emails simply return automated responses. I tried contacting the person in charge of admissions for Program Y, but she hasn't responded to anything (phone calls or emails). Finally, after a couple of times that I contacted the university's general admissions department, I got an email from the admissions people at Program X on January 5th stating that they're working with the general admissions department to get it fixed, and they'll email me back when they have an update. Fast forward to today: still no email, I sent an email asking for an update (no response thus far). It's been quite a while since applications were due, and I have no idea if I'm going to be excluded from the admissions process or not. Any suggestions as to what to do? Should I contact some professor in the department, detailing my situation, and ask him/her for assistance in the matter? Thanks! mewtwo

Anyone Regret Anything? (2010-2011 Edition)
mewtwo replied to HyacinthMacaw's topic in Waiting it Out
I would have taken fewer classes. Between classes, TAing, and other tasks, I had almost no time to work on my applications (most of which happened to be due the day I proctored a 3-hour final and took a 3-hour final). -
Evaluate me sop
mewtwo replied to ankit18's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
This is going to sound harsh, but here's my honest opinion I hope that all of the missing spaces are an artifact of copy/pasting (though the spelling in this and your other post make me somewhat doubt it)Your SOP grammar errors.Paragraphs 2 and 3 don't tell the readers anything they didn't already knowParagraph 4 is highly generic and doesn't say anything about what you did, only that you worked on "aproject"Same problem with paragraph 5. What kinds of social activities did you take part in?Paragraph 6: Why are you interested in doing research? This two sentence paragraph doesn't give anything beyond the name of the field to which you're applying. Finally there's some substance towards the beginning of paragraph 7 (why you're pursuing an MS), but it's still a terribly generic paragraph. This is your statement of purpose. Make it about you, not about the average prospective grad student.I've never seen underscored used in that way, but good opening sentence to the second-to-last paragraph. The rest of your paragraph is weak. You mention two professors with a very generic remark. The last sentence makes everything look like you were playing mad libs with your SoP.The last paragraph doesn't add anything -

Hi, I'm just curious how much the GRE Verbal matters in admission to top schools. My GRE Quant. and AW are both good (800,6), but my Verbal is only 620 (89th percentile). Does anyone know if this will affect my chances at top CS programs? Thanks!
