  1. I don't know if they posted or not on the results page. I'm just aware through their facebook feed. Sorry for not being able to provide more information.
  2. Friend on facebook was accepted into UGA's PhD program in English . . . and now I'm freaking out about getting accepted into any program? Anyone in a similar situation?
  3. Minneapolis is a delightful city, you should enjoy the visit (if a beer drinker, their local micro-brewery Surly puts out some delicious brews). As for the temperature . . . good luck.
  4. How is Marquette's program from a student perspective? I'm thinking of applying there for my PhD and I would love an inside look at the department. I'm going for specifically 20/21 century American (I notice they are currently looking for 2 tenure track professors in this area). Especially interested in working with Amy Blair, Heather Hathaway, and Jodi Melamed. Any input would be very appreciated.
  5. Congrats on the acceptance. A former student in my MA program is currently finishing his second year there, and loves the school and the program (the city as well, for what that matters).
  6. What to do in your off year . . . hang out with me after I get rejected? We'd drink tequila and eat ice cream, mostly . . . Seriously though, read some Norton Anthologies to study up on the Subject (it'll increase chances of funding) and start conferencing seems like the best advice. And don't get down if you don't get in, it's a process and a shitty economy. Lots of brilliant people do not get in their first time out (several of my professors).
  7. Found this, which may help: These full-time faculty members engage in both undergraduate and graduate teaching, mentoring, research, and service. Only faculty in these positions are eligible for tenure. Assistant professor: An introductory level professor. A position generally taken after receiving PhD and/or completing a post-doctoral fellowship. After 4–8 years, assistant professors will be either tenured or dismissed from the university.Associate professor: A mid-level, usually tenured, professor.Professor (sometimes referred to as "full professor"): a senior, tenured professor.Distinguished professor / endowed chair (e.g., "the John Q. Smith Professor of Physics"): An honorary position in which a full professor's salary is increased by being tied to an endowment derived from the university, private individuals, firms, or foundations.
  8. Hey Everyone, What are your feelings on listing non-tenured faculty, or assistant professors, in your SOP? I'm sure that such professors are tenure-track, they still are relatively new to the institution and, perhaps, unproven. Also, the horrific possibility of their tenure being denied and you losing your mentor. Thoughts?
  9. New to the board, but here's the list of schools I'm looking into: English PhD: SUNY-Buffalo UIC SUNY-Stony Brook St. Louis University (SLU) SUNY-Albany Syracuse Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) Cultural Studies PhD: Minnesota George Mason Area of Interest: 20th/21st Century American, Neoliberalism/Globalization (Political Economy), Popular Culture, Hardboiled Crime Fiction and Film Noir
  10. I still like my constructed narrative of "we MUST have him and give him a hefty stipend to TA. Get him to complete the app so we can offer ASAP." Thanks for the help.
  11. So I just received an e-mail from a school requesting that I submit an application for a TA position (and submit a second writing sample?! Like I have them lying around?!). Regardless of my intentions (did not apply as TA originally due to school being in-state and my limited teaching experience) does this serve as a good sign or am I reading too deeply into procedure? Or worse, is there just an adcomm who gets his kicks from making me scramble to submit a second writing sample in less than 36 hours (said needed it tomorrow by the end of the day). Any thoughts, dearest grad cafe?
  12. New to the GradCafe and already being subjugated to coffee drinks whereupon I prefer to spread my caffeine intake across multiple ventures (such as energy drinks!). Where's the Rockstar love!? Anywho, so while my GRE scores on my recent test were not fantastic (specifically the writing) if I amalgamate the best scores with those prior it reads: 660 Verbal, 580 Quant, 5.5 writing. My question is then, should I put my BEST scores or my most RECENT scores on the application (knowing full well they'll see both).
