  1. I actually bought a house in the area where my school is at... I had only visited the area about a week before that... my program has a great program coordinator who hooked me up with a great realtor. Together they talked through what the area was like, good/bad areas to live, etc... I did a lot of research online before coming back out to look/put an offer on the house... The local police have a great crime statistics website that I was able to verify their recommendations... Also, they put me into contact with other ppl in the department to talk about where are good places to live... I LOVE my house and the area and I couldn't ask for more!
  2. I bought a house with the living stipend.. I worked for 2 yrs before I came out to grad school though so I could put a good downpayment down on the house and have a cushion to pay for everything over the next 4-6 yrs.. it is possible even with the tough economy.
  3. yea I'm moving from the East Coast too... probably going back down there in May/June to look for apartments/buy house or so... depends on when my SO gets a job.. hopefully soon!!!
  4. I've gotten a very competitive offer from UofA for the upcoming year from the BME department. I guess it'll just vary by department on the whole funding thing... I got my financial aide letter about a month ago. I just got back from a week in Tucson, visiting the university, and absolutely loved it! I'm soo excited to go there in a few months! Now its just figuring out where to live.. and then actually move! eek..
  5. I applied to the engineering college.. and just heard yesterday from them of my acceptance.. maybe ur dept is similar.. gluck!
  6. I'm not a CA resident and just got my second admit from a CA school... so far I've got 3 admits, 3 rejections, and still waiting on three more schools information. I've only gotten funding from one school so far.. I'm hoping that will come soon... I can't really afford any school without some sort of funding package.. :-/
  7. yea the program coordinator or professor would be able to get you in contact with current students. That's what I've done. It's been pretty helpful.
  8. I got accepted to two engineering programs and neither paid for you to come visit... Everything was on your own dime... I scraped some money together to do it..and I'm glad b/c it totally changed my mind on the universities.
  9. have you visited both schools?? After visiting my offers... I'm much MUCH more excited about a school that was lower on my list; however, it will undoubtedly be a better fit for me... but I couldn't get that from reading internet stats/bios/overviews
  10. I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to Tucson this fall. I'm visiting in two weeks to talk to ppl in the dept and check out the potential living situation. I'm moving with my significant other.. so finding a apt/house and a job for him is important too during the visit... Anyways.. I'm VERY excited! I grew up, went to school, and currently live in Pennsylvania... so to go to a warm place without tons of snow is pretty exciting! definitely complete opposite!

    Tucson, AZ

I'm considering going to UofA this fall for my Ph.D. My boyfriend will be moving with me and we were considering buying a house, since we will be there for a while and with his salary we would be able to afford it... What areas of Tucson are good/nice areas to live in?? Online there's a ton next to the Indian Reservation, but I"m not so sure that would be a great area?? How's the North/Northwest side of the city?? Any thoughts??
  12. I was accepted to UCLA's BME program. My unofficial letter didn't say what degree I was admitted to. I applied as a Ph.D., so I'm assuming thats what its for... guess I'll find out when my official letter comes in. I was invited to the Open House next week, which isn't being reimbursed. I've heard that too from another person who was admitted... I haven't heard anything on funding yet either...
  13. Thanks for the input... I plan on responding as soon as possible... however.. I want to have my other financial aid/money offer before I make my decision.. since that's a huge factor to my acceptance.
  14. So, I got two offers.. which I'm excited about: However... Here's the catch... I got full funding (stipend, tuition remission, etc) from Univ of Arizona. I've gotten accepted from UCLA.. however no word yet on funding/tuition remission... University of Arizona wants my answer no later than 3/15. I'm not sure that I'll have my funding package yet from UCLA... I thought you had technically until 4/15 not 3/15... Has anyone else experienced the pressure to accept early?? I'm afraid if I say no to Univ of Arizona and yes to UCLA that I wont get any funding from UCLA... and I can't afford to go unless I get funding.. so I've got a little bit of a situation... any thoughts??

    Bethlehem, PA

I grew up in an area about 45 min north of bethlehem... Bethlehem is a smaller type area.. It's near Allentown, which has a decent mall in it... and Crocodile Rock, which is a small venue and has smaller artists come in an play.. If your not keen on staying on campus/immediate area your whole time while you're in school there, Iwould recommend having a car... That way you can drive to King of Prussia (Great shopping/restaurants) and to Philly
