Given CA's financial situation, and that you'll be getting more money for years 2 and 3, it seems like a pretty decent package. Maybe once you know you have more funding from another program you could mention that to UCLA and see if they take the hint, but I wouldn't just write back asking for more money.
-
haha, yeah, it was you, but I didn't want to "out" your rejection. I also don't really mind, so long as someone doesn't sell our e-mails to an ad/spam company. Mostly I'm just shocked that such a highly ranked program would be so unprofessional.
-
Yeah, I too got an e-mail with the addresses of MANY other rejected applicants, including someone I go to school with, and at least one person I recognized from this forum. I'm just waiting for someone to reply all so we can start corresponding about how unprofessional Berkeley is! The program also lost one of my letters of recommendation, as well as an LOR of the other rejected student from my school, and 2 LORs for a friend who applied for a MA in a different department. They need to get their act together!
-
nope - I'm eagerly waiting too! I was hoping they would notify last week, like they did in 2008, but it looks like we might be waiting a bit longer - acceptances were on Feb 17th in 2006...
-
migrationdude - that's awesome. Apparently the list has grown to the "dirty dozen" and it says about that particular class: gah! Most of the other classes on the list look pretty sweet too!

wait, do you have your own type of neoliberal? or do we have very different understandings of what neoliberal means? I know LOTS of poor people who have been fucked over by the neoliberal agenda...

should I contact the graduate program coordinator?
waitinginohio replied to waitinginohio's topic in Sociology Forum
I don't really have any questions, other than "am I in?" and "when can you tell me if I'm in?" The meeting with the prof. went really well, and I had a chance to get answers to all of my questions then... -
so BESIDES research... what do you do?

knit, play drums/percussion, cook/bake, dream about the dog (probably a bernese mountain dog) I will finally get once I'm done with UG, watch the Office, 30 Rock, and Chuck, and make lists/plan/organize. And try to get everyone around me to think more sociologically. -
That's funny, because I tend to assume most of the people posting in the soc section are female, GLBTQ friendly if not GLBTQ themselves, and not (very) religious, though I must admit I've assumed white and middle class. Probably because this is the profile of most of the soc majors and soc profs at my school.

So, while home for winter break I met with a Prof. at a program I applied to. When we were setting up a meeting time, he recommended that I see if the grad program coordinator would be around then so I could meet her as well. I sent her an e-mail, and she said she would be out of town, but would love to talk to me via phone sometime after Feb. 5th. I sent her an e-mail back saying I would be in touch. At the time Feb 5th seemed like a random date, but after searching on gradcafe I found out that's when they notified people last year. However nobody has reported any communication from the department so far this year. So, here's the question - should I call her? Or e-mail to ask if I should call? Or wait because it's super likely they'll notify within the next couple days? I don't want her to think I'm not interested or forgot, I also don't want to delay or somehow hurt my chances in their decision making process. Thoughts?

TA at better school or Fellowship at another?
waitinginohio replied to jmbky1's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I know absolutely nothing about Chemistry programs, but for anyone wondering the same thing for a non-science program, I would go for the RA/TA option because of this: from https://webspace.utexas.edu/cherwitz/ww ... lwood.html -
Bob Freeland lies!

Is anyone getting funding for the visit day? I didn't assume I would get any, but I'm curious when they say "we are unable to provide travel funds for Visit Day" if they mean that for everyone, or just those who don't have funding.
-
I think they meant for a cohort of 7-8, not that only 7-8 were accepted. They were just trying to make it sound nicer.
-
Just got the rejection e-mail - almost 200 applicants for 7-8 spots. At least they aren't keeping us waiting...
-
It's nearing 5pm PST and five (of 15ish total) people have posted acceptances on thegradcafe. Unless those phone calls last a super long time, or Stanford's accepting significantly more than 15 people, I'm thinking it's time to give up and get back to work. Or just call them. sigh... the faculty member I was corresponding with gave me so much hope!
-
who got the phone acceptance today? any details you're willing to share?
-
anyone with more info on this result????? "Late February/early March is likely when we will be getting back to applicants" ...to the rejected applicants, I think
-
haha, I was just about to ask too! I'll try not to freak out just yet, since last year people were admitted via e-mail Feb 8 through Feb 12. Oh the suspense!

What most of my Profs have told me is that if you don't want to go into academia, there's pretty much no good reason to get a PhD. It's a waste of time and money to get a PhD and then work in a job that only requires a bachelor's or master's degree. PhDs have very specialized experience, and it very rarely matches up with the experience and skills that non-academic careers require. So needless to say, I'm planning on going into academia too.

Yeah, I got into Madison, and yes, my letter also seemed funding related. It said: "Unfortunately, we don not have the resources to support every candidate to whom we would like to offer admission. Although we cannot offer you admission at this time, we have placed your name on our very short waiting list" and "The very latest you will hear from us is the end of April." I also still stand by what I said in this thread a couple posts up - my application became a lot stronger after it was submitted to UMN, and I would guess that many others also improved by the later deadlines. Good luck to everyone who hasn't heard yet, and congrats to anyone who has been accepted!

I got my waitlist letter in the mail today too.

wow, that was rather awful. As far as New York Times columnists go, I generally turn to Maureen Dowd when I want to feel bad about life/humanity. Her article published in Latin (though she wasn't the one who translated it into Latin, and the original English version wasn't published, mind you) took the cake. Though looking back, the vast majority of her 2008 pieces were horrendous...

I'm planning on waiting until I hear back from all of my other schools or the end of February, whichever comes first, and then I think I'll ask about funding. From what some current PhD students have told me, it can't hurt to drop a line mentioning that you would like to know about funding at Madison since *insert school here* is offering you *insert funding package here* and you would like to weigh your options. In fact, one current student said that he mention via e-mail that he might have to turn down School A because School B was offering him a better funding package. Someone at School A passed this information along and a couple hours later he got an e-mail offering him an additional summer of funding at School A. It seems like the best plan is to wait until you have some leverage, and then mention you are dissatisfied with your funding package (or lack thereof). Good luck!
