funding details pico? and was it a personal e-mail?
-
That's a bummer about needing a car - UA advertises how great the city is for biking, but a bike isn't enough?
-
was it a mass e-mail, or personal? or was it "real" mail?
-
Maybe they meant 9,500 applicants to the entire grad school, not just the soc department? Even 950 for the soc department seems like a lot - I don't think even NYU had that many applicants, and it has a similar ranking, not to mention NY beats New Haven any day...

anyone have some new information to offer about Tucson? It looks like I'll be going there in the fall, or (if I get into the UW) choosing between Tucson and Seattle (where I was born and raised). I've heard lots and lots of great things about Tucson, so any of the downsides would be good to know as well. Thanks!

I have no idea about funding, the visit day, or anything other than what I posted above. But according to the website, Even if the amounts end up being a bit less for 09-10, that's still PLENTY of money to get by on in Tucson. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything!

I don't think it hurts to call or e-mail and ask what you should assume, since you didn't get news last week (when they said they would notify) - I think they contacted me so quickly because I e-mailed on Friday and said I needed to plan a visit to another school if I didn't get in to UA, and wanted to know what to do since I didn't hear anything last week. They've made their decisions, and those decisions won't change if you call. GOOD LUCK!

Just got into a program I like more than UMN, so I'm e-mailing them to take my name off the waiting list.
-
I JUST GOT IN! I got a personal e-mail saying "Our committee just met, and you've been admitted. I'll send a more formal email later today or tomorrow, but wanted to be sure to let you know right away." YAY!

BUMP

anything? anyone? I sent an e-mail today asking if they're still planning to notify accepted students this week, and haven't heard anything back...

log in click update on the right then you see: Applicant name: Application ID (please include this number in correspondence with UW): Selected graduate program: Type: Application for (quarter, year): Date Application Submitted on Web: Application Deadline: Application Status: You will receive notification of acceptance or denial by email or postal mail. Application Complete: The department has confirmed that it has received all necessary application information including letters, transcripts, test scores, and other required items.

YES! Except the acceptances/rejections tend to actually show up.

It looks like tomorrow SHOULD be our day... unless the weekend counts as the week of the 16th, or they let us down (and as we've found, adcoms are great at letting people down  )! Should we place bets on if UA will contact tomorrow? Are we allowed to call/e-mail at the end of the day if they don't start contacting tomorrow?
-
ok, so maybe I'm just obsessing, but I logged in to check the status of my application, and the website (https://www.grad.washington.edu/applFor ... login.aspx) says: I don't remember this being there before, but it's also been a long week, so it might have been there all along... anyone else have the same message and know if it's new or not?
-
Who was accepted via phone w/ good funding and is totally surprised (according to the results)??? Did you have an interview?
-
no, you're right
-
Yeah, I also got the same e-mail, and also haven't gotten any calls or e-mails since then. They've only got two more days before we all start calling!
-
guilty as charged... mine are in the bookmarks toolbar so I don't even have to open a folder to get to them!
-
nope... I'm getting rather impatient!
-
I'm 21, will be 22 when I start. This sounds like the perfect opportunity to make a poll! They're so much fun!
-
I'm on the UMN waitlist, but if I get an acceptance with funding I'll be telling them take me off. It's too cold there anyway!

It's interesting how much emphasis we're all putting on numbers and rankings - I would have guessed that as soc students we would understand how much more is involved than just the ranking of the school you get your PhD from. Another thing to keep in mind is that just because a scholar went to a lesser-ranked school, it doesn't mean they weren't accepted to others with higher rankings, it just means that for whatever reason (being close to family, preserving a relationship, school fit, advisor fit, closer to research site, etc.) they chose that school. Did you apply to any schools that aren't in the top 25ish? If you and others in the field know that this guy is top-notch, I would assume that they will be impressed by his name even if the school isn't #1. (And once again, even though he could work at a higher-ranked school, there are likely personal reasons for why he is where he is.) You could also search for the placements and publications of his former students...
-
Yeah, and their current rankings from US News and World reports are Stony Brook - 38, Washington - 17, Michigan State - 42. Granted I don't know what the rankings of these schools were when these Prof's were there, but the UW is currently in the top 20, and the other two certainly aren't unknown.
-
Yeah, have you thought about making some calls/emails and withdrawing your application from some schools you are much less interested in (I know you listed your top 4 somewhere else on here), just so you aren't taking places from people who really do want to go there? At this rate it looks like EVERY school wants you, and HUGE CONGRATS for that, but it would be a shame if some other qualified applicants miss out at the schools you aren't even considering anymore.
