  1. I don't even know what I'm doing in this thread.... I got the award last year but I'm so excited for all the people I know applying this year. I just checked my email from way back, and I received an email from NSF at 2:45am on March 29th 2013. Funny story though, I got an HM and was bumped up to awardee in mid june. Good luck guys!
  2. I thought the number of awards offered was dead on 2,000 when the list first came out. Now it says 2,064. Likely a combination of both. Congrats!
  3. Received this email from NSF this afternoon: "Congratulations! Due to availability of funding we have changed your status from Honorable Mention to Awardee, and I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive a 2013 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF)." WHAAAT?!! Anyone else? I had to log in to fastlane and see that the status of my award had changed from HM to Awardee before I believed it!! !!
  4. HM...again. I'm a second year, so this is it. It took a couple of days to shake it off and be able to accept it. So, I finally made it to Grad Cafe and I just want to say that I'm genuinely happy for all of you who got offered the award! Thanks for all the tips and keeping my sanity through this anxious process. This time: G/E VG/E G/E They all got stuck on my 3.2 undergrad GPA. I also got HM last year because of "less than stellar" undergraduate record, so this year I made a big deal about and had my PI comment on how my undergrad grades are not reflective of my potential but I think I might have planted too big of a red flag on it, since this time around they all commented on it. So for those of you who still have a shot, be subtle. If the reviewer thinks your GPA sucks, he can find the few sentences where you described how you've overcame your low grades, but if they don't notice it ... make sure it's not everywhere. On the plus side, I'm now Honorable Honorable matba or Twice Honorable matba (I like the last one more I think).
  5. That's an awesome idea! Thank you and congrats on being offered an award! Ps. Have you not seen the link on how to get to the reviewer comments? Someone posted it here. Or you can just wait until they officially come up tomorrow.
  6. Got HM. G/VG VG/E VG/E The reviewers were really positive actually, the only negative thing they all mentioned was that there are some weaknesses in my undergraduate academic records. AKA low undergrad GPA. How do you fix that? With broader impact you can always do more outreach. Feeling discouraged to reapply next year. :/
  7. 1st year and got an HM. I know I'm supposed to be happy but I'm feeling let down. Ugh... Left gradcafe and went to sleep around 1am because I didn't want to see it, woke up early this morning knowing that it would be in my inbox. In my half sleep state, I read the subject header and knew it was a no go. Maybe I'll have better luck next year! Congrats everyone!
  8. I received an unofficial offer via email from a PI in the admission committee this evening and instead of running my victory lap as I had expected, I just sat at my desk in shock. After about 5 minutes of not knowing what to do, I called my parents, updated my facebook status and went out for beer with my labmates!
  9. I'm going to run a victory lap! Drop whatever I'm doing and run around, hands raised and fingers interlocked waving in triumph. There also might be lots of "Wohooos" involved. Just came back from my first interview, keeping fingers crossed. Best of luck everyone!
  10. You were not alone, I also had no idea! I thought it was just a variation of Principal Investigator and ignored it.
  11. Oh man, I shouldn't have bought nice brown shoes for my interview in St. Louis next week, the snow is going to ruin them!
