  1. I suggest taking department funding the first year. It kind of just worked out that way for me. I was awarded a departmental fellowship (which required no teaching), but I did do grading. I'll be starting my NSF tenure immediately (because my first year funding ends this quarter). So, I sort of didn't have a choice in the way things worked out for me. But if I had been awarded an NSF last year, I definitely would have reserved it for my 2nd-4th years in order to take advantage of the departmental fellowship. Office hours are not a biggie. I'm sure you can handle it. And, you'll be happy to have funding in your 4th year! That's just my two cents. Good luck.

    NDSEG fellowship

It's getting close to the end of the work day.

    NDSEG fellowship

We got our NSF results at about 10pm (west coast time). So, it's possible that NDSEG will do the same. I really don't have a clue.

    NDSEG fellowship

If you've already been awarded NSF GRFP, then you don't have to worry about tuition, even it is more than the 10,500 cost of education from GRFP. This is from the NSF program solicitation website http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10604/nsf10604.htm : "The cost-of-education allowance to the institution is currently $10,500 per tenure year and is to be used by the institution toward the costs of educating the Fellow during that time period. During tenure, the institution is required to exempt Fellows from paying tuition and fees normally charged to students of similar academic standing, unless such charges are optional or are refundable (i.e., the institution is responsible for tuition and required fees in excess of the cost of education allowance). " I totally agree that it would be an honor to win both, but it really is hard to compare them based on the stipend alone. Sure the NDSEG stipend is greater by a couple thousand dollars. But as an NSF fellow, you can apply for additional funded opportunities in both industry and research abroad. Congrats on winning the NSF GRFP! And good luck to everyone waiting on NDSEG.

    Stipends?

That sounds like a reasonable offer. If you're wondering if it is equivalent to what other students in your school are getting, or if it's enough to live on in that area, you should probably ask around? Students in the department would have the 411. Stipend information is actually available online at my university; it might be the same at yours. Maybe you can check online. But it still sounds like a good offer.
  6. I'm really not sure if it's any cheaper, but what about shipping by freight train?
  7. I'm not sure what kind of job you have, but many companies (usually large ones) will pay for their employees education. That was my main reason for applying for a job at Boeing.
  8. I also have the same question. But I'm concentrating in high penetration of renewable energy. I'm also interested any insight prior applicants may have.
  9. You aren't the only one. I almost made the mistake myself. The problem is that in the excitement of getting an award many (including myself) didn't read the entire offer letter. Al the way at the bottom (second to the last sentence), they tell us that we won't be able to access the reviews after declaring tenure. I guess you could call and see what you can do, but I think it's too late. But hey, don't let this get you down. YOU WON!!! :)Congrats.
  10. Two off my reference writers were undergrad professors. The third was actually a supervisor for one of the outreach groups that I am a member of. The most important thing is that you choose someone who knows you well and can speak highly of you. I chose people who knew me for at least a year, or had taught me in at least two classes. (I'm also a first year grad student )
  11. They criticized my gpa as well (3.59), but I got raving reviews for broader impacts, and undergrad research experience. I was so worried that my gpa would be a deal breaker, but it looks like they really do consider the applicant as a whole. I guess strengths in one area can compensate for weakness in another.
  12. When I log into fastlane it says that the rating sheets will be available within 3 days and specified in the award letter. Where are you all reading your rating sheets? EDIT: Wait, it's working now.

    NDSEG fellowship

I don' think the budget will affect awards too much. People were having the same discussion in the NSF thread and we got our results last night.
  14. Thank you God! Award Offered. I can't believe it. Congrats and best wishes everyone.
  15. The website is up but I can't see the list? Anyone see the list?
  16. 443 User(s) are reading this topic (and checking fastlane )
  17. Fastlane is down now, so I'm hoping in the next couple of hours. 10pm on the west coast.
  18. Or not, if you're blessed with an offer tomorrow! Best wishes.....
  19. The last 24 hours are the hardest.
  20. Patiently waiting NSF, and NDSEG results.....

  21. I believe someone posted a question similar to this already (but concerning African students). Fulbright funds international students.
  22. I have a gut feeling that it's going to be Friday. But I'll go ahead and jump on the Monday bandwagon.
  23. On Fastlane, where they post the winners. https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/AwardeeList.do?method=loadAwardeeList
