    Plan B?

dont worry. if it makes you feel better, a lot of the job applicants out of school that i've seen suprisingly dont have much coding experience you'll probably want to rewrite your resume and tailor it to relate to the descriptions of the jobs that you are applying to though. ive been involved in a few hirings at my company, and i was surprised to see how many generic resumes we received. it was pretty obvious which applicants just batch applied, and which ones took the time to do it properly

    Plan B?

yeah this whole issue with money eats at me too. the opportunity cost of foregone salary plus the cost of tuition and living expenses is always giving me second thoughts. i'm really hoping for an acceptance from a school w/ funding for MS students (uiuc i'm talking to you!).. does anyone know if BU gives funding for MS? i thought i read that somewhere, but i can't find it anymore you said youre in the boston area right? try emc--i'm pretty sure they're the largest employer of software engineers (thats what i'm assuming you're looking for) in massachusetts, and starting salaries are usually around 65k+

    Plan B?

i'm working full time right now, so my "safety school" was actually my job. i also made sure to apply to at least one less competitive school so that i would probably have the option to go to school if i really wanted to. if heaven forbid you dont get in to anywhere, are you going to try again for the spring? or just focus on working? another option for you could be to work and take classes on the side. a lot of companies will pay for tuition if it relates to your job and if you stay for a certain amount of time after completing the class.
  5. man it must really suck to have an acceptance taken away..
  6. i was thinking the same thing until i saw this post: hope it's not true though. btw congrats!
  7. congrats ac/dc. i got rejected from brown, but before it happened i researched the cost. i think 65k is the estimated cost per year including housing, living expensies, tuition, fees, etc. tuition alone is about 40k per year from the website: (http://www.brown.edu/gradschool/financing-support/tuition-and-fees)
  8. thanks, unfortunately the hot streak is now over. got a rejection from brown earlier this week congrats on upenn. the first one is always a relief.. i don't think i'm considering going there anymore though. it wasnt a safety for me, but i can't really afford the tuition. i'm waiting another few weeks before i give up on uiuc, based on the survey results from last year
  9. that a lot of people can't spell "science" correctly, and you get get more survey results by just searching for "computer"? (this may result in some computer engineering noise) it doesnt help that the survey autocomplete suggests "Computer Scicence" as the first result!
  10. i got the rejection email today too. it actually does say 1,1200. i think you're right--it's just a typo in the email and 1200 is probably the correct number
  11. any idea how important visits are for prospective MS students? i'm thinking about travelling overseas in early march, and that would probably prevent me from attending some of my schools' visiting weekends. other than a campus tour, what's are some of the benefits of attending them? any advice would be appreciated!
  12. hey on the bright side, a lot of your schools are state schools--which are a lot cheaper than private good luck!
  13. thanks newms! this is for a terminal MS. seems like there hasnt been any phd activity with umass yet
  14. thanks yama not much info came with the acceptance email, but the CS dept website is pretty clear that MS students dont get departmental aid i made the same mistake as you, assuming that it's common for MS students to get funding. therefore, a lot of my private schools arent an option for me, even if i get in. what schools have you applied to?
  15. accepted by umass amherst! relieved for getting into an affordable MS program
  16. theres been a lot of phd activity w/ UIUC lately, but I only see one entry for MS. did anyone else in MS hear anything?
  17. btw, your profile says youre looking to enroll in fall 2011.. if that's true then better get a move on for MS a lot of schools' deadlines have already passed or are coming up soon. and the ones that haven't passed yet are most likely rolling, so the earlier you apply the better
  18. i applied to umass, gatech, upenn, brown, columbia, uiuc, northeastern, bu, nyu. got into upenn and northeastern, still waiting on the others
  19. hey guys i'm new here, but i quickly realized that most of the CS posters here are phD applicants. since it looks like the MS acceptances don't follow the phD acceptances for a lot of schools, i thought our feeble group of MS applicants should have a thread to talk about our acceptances and what not too =D let's hear the good (and bad) news!
  20. thanks for the info, i'll definitely look into it some more. congrats on uiuc btw
  21. oh yeah, and just fyi if you look at the gradcafe admission surveys, neu has already started sending out acceptance letters for ms students
  22. i woudlnt rule you out of the running for phD at neu.. btw in case you didnt know, northeastern's funding for MS students is actually kind of limited. like most schools, assistantships are reserved for phD students. if youre really good or find a prof on your own, you might be able to get one; but you probably shouldn't count on it. on the other hand, they do consider all MS students for their dean's scholarship, which is based on merit; which could cover up to 1/3 of tuition costs. but yeah, i'm pretty sure full funding for MS would be difficult
  23. i got into upenn's MCIS program. i'm interested in machine learning. anyone have any opinions/insight about their program? unfortunately upenn is pretty expensive, and they (as most CS masters programs ) don't provide departmental aid
  24. whattt did that really happen? guess you gotta be quick to accept the offer as soon as you get it [quote name=hello! ' timestamp='1292739097' post='171515] LoL this is somewhat funny, but it's not so bad. Either last year or 2 years ago, UC San Diego's undergraduate admissions administrator accidentally sent all(?) rejected applicants with an email of acceptance. So of course, they had to follow that up immediately with a letter of rejection.
