  1. just got an email from harvard that i got in they may have had one too many cocktails in the adcom the day they read my file
  2. i think there have been a few berkeley claims in the last few weeks but i'm entirely too lazy to go back and check
  3. fair enough. time to see how much personal and identifying information i need to strip from my SOP. also, to get over the embarrassment of having to post my undergraduate GPA in this forum
  4. I'm still waiting to hear from 3 schools (berkeley, harvard and caltech), is it too soon to post my info in the profiles/results thread? is there any penalty if i don't wait? any benefit to waiting?
  5. i have nothing from princeton so it looks like i'm out there but i'm quite at peace with that. i probably should have just withdrawn my application after i heard from columbia. i don't think there's any way i would have chosen princeton over columbia. a lot of this. this is the pending application i am feeling the most antsy about right now. the other two are harvard and caltech.
  6. they have a bunch of offers out and will be making more as some people decline them. i just declined an offer from them yesterday. if you want more details pm me, i can tell you abut what i was specifically told
  7. damn. time to register a new account or 3
  8. just change your name, i've been thinking about cranking up my anonymity around these parts as well
  9. i thought china had emperors, but what do i know. i'm just an ignorant americanist
  10. I have a foot in this boat and am sort of unsure between the two. But I don't feel as dumb as others would say because every non academic job I've wanted in the last year or so has been a research job that lists its self as "PhD preferred" so if they are looking for trained researchers, thats what I need to be trained as. Also for favorite president, 100% LBJ.
  11. Anyone going to MIT or Columbia's?
  12. Let me know when you're in NYC
  13. a lot of these aren't weekends because faculty don't want to work then plus you can see classes in action and junk. Also, sup?
  14. My undergraduate gpa is bad. Like embarrasingly so. Lower than I care to post publicly. My current set of offers is an embarassment of riches (MIT, Columbia and Notre Dame). Chin up. It is possible. I'll put My full story in the advice thread in mid April. If you want to know something sooner you can send me a PM.

  16. I wouldn't expect today to be a break from hearing. Universities are running. Classes are meeting and so are committees. No reason there won't be notifications.
  17. Of wisconsins funding, one of my mentors told me that when he was applying about 12 years ago, Wisconsin upped their offer by around 5k/yr as soon as he told them he had offers from Princeton and Yale. I have no idea if they still operate this way but it can't hurt to find out.
  18. The Sunday Columbia accept is me. Really pleased with it. The email was an official one from from the assistant dean of the graduate school.
  19. I can claim a Notre Dame offer in American. Got a really nice note from David Nickerson in addition to the email from the DGS
  20. i'm up to defcon2 over this continued lack of news from columbia. i get panicked every time i get a new email or my phone rings from an unknown number. if this continues, i might be at defcon1 by Tuesday. though hopefully 4 days of unplugging from the internet and trying to find snow to ski on will help me unwind
  21. i'd imagine there is a lot of this. in my dad's department, he has funding for 4 students per year. he is allowed to make 5 offers. if all 5 accept, he only gets 3 the next year. if 3 or fewer accept, then he can send more offers. This would obviously be on a larger scale in a bigger department
  22. was the POI at columbia jeff lax or justin phillips perchance?
  23. there's a columbia acceptance up. anyone want to claim?
  24. I have little idea about terminal MA programs, though I think very highly of Columbia's MA in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences. I did that and it was great for me. It is a very big reason why I have a competitive application for top departments this cycle. I don't know the exact stats, but I am pretty sure that it does a better job of placing people than Columbia's MA only program, especially once you control for the fact that a lot of people who go into QMSS are in different fields and/or have little-to-no interest in continuing on to a Ph.D.
  25. Conversations with parents don't get any easier when you parents are professors. He're's a sample: "How long do you think you'll take?" "Well I've got 5 years of guaranteed funding..." "You should probably aim for 3.5 to 4" "..." "I have all these students who start and then get distracted by other projects and don't finish. I don't want to see that happen to you." "I haven't even started yet." "It would really be better if you just got it done as quickly as possible" "..."
