Now is the time to calm down. Don't think about what you did. Don't preemptively knock yourself while you're down either. / : Do something that is distracting. I've been calming myself down with 1000 piece puzzle while listening to music. Once you really get into it, it's hard to really acknowledge anything else. You will know soon enough - come what may.

Congratumulations (:

Excuse me sir, "sub zero?" "Snow drift?" . . . . Sounds like it'll be an experience! I can buck up I hope, if I do choose this school. Southern wardrobe? Daisy dukes, tank tops, flippy floppies . . . Around $90 doesn't sound so bad. I was expecting to hear something in the mid 100s.

I'm thoroughly considering UIUC - first acceptance, first city I get to research more. By the sounds of it, I may enjoy the Urbana side more . . distractions can definitely ruin my concentration for long periods of time - and if it's quieter . . . I'm mainly concerned about the weather. Layer, layer, layer, or do I need to toss out my southern wardrobe to acclimate myself better (of course, by buying more clothes--!)? I'm originally from NJ, but I've been in the South for a decade now . . . I'd be interested in renting a house over an apartment, but generally . . what do you pay for heating monthly during the Winter there? I *do* have a space heater, just in case.

I received a mass e-mail from UNC. I haven't received any spam. I'm not interested in discovering who is behind obscure e-mail addresses either, but I'm thankful I used my school e-mail, as opposed to my gmail. I like to keep my school stuff on my school account only.

Acceptance and potential linguistic challenges!
Herbie replied to a piece of bread's topic in History
I'd watch game shows, and talk shows. They're generally conversational English as opposed to being clearly scripted. Family shows too. Just - no CSI. Since you know where you're going, I'd definitely Skype with a graduate student in the department, etc. if they're willing. If not, there should be an International Office with plenty of people in the same boat wanting to practice a language. I feel as if you expressed yourself very well, and foresee no difficulties until you run into dialects and colloquial statements. That said, NY is one of the best locations that has all of that and above. Good luck! -
As long as this isn't Failbruary for me ]:

If I had a voicemail from Yale, I'd save it - forever.

I empathize with curiouser and curiouser. I don't believe anyone is interested in deriving pleasure from forum rumors. The forum simply provides every applicant the opportunity to discuss graduate program issues - primarily acceptance and rejection letters due to graduate schools generally being silent, and people want immediate knowledge of their situation. Despite the information queenofprussia provided, getting an unofficial rejection based on your "category" via non-professor is not only disheartening, but tasteless. In this sense, this is where too much information begs the question for less anonymity behind user handles, because it's not just skepticism anymore. It's likened to any situation, like "I got accepted to X today. If you don't hear from them by X, you're totally out." Not knocking you, anonymousbequest, but I mainly started posting on this forum because of the realization that it was a support group, not a "which concentration is more difficult," or "which concentration needs less focus." I'd be interested in discussing the situation of art history discourse with you, but I aim to articulate certain issues with more experience behind my belt (which I don't believe I have . . . unless I cite AF/CAA/etc). The only thing I can think of is that those who were in touch with graduate professors asked the significant question: "Are you accepted graduate students under your supervision for Fall 2011?" I believe that may ameliorate some of the building tension. Otherwise, good luck in whatever you're doing.

Yeah, I just heard about Emory and its upcoming interviews. I'm rooting for the graduate student I knew during my undergrad in Atlanta. (: I hope the poster on the results gets in good too!

What's the story behind your avatar or username?
Herbie replied to katerific's topic in Waiting it Out
It's actually a typo. I realized this later (aka, yesterday). It's supposed to be Chulianne - the way a Laotian girl says my first name with ''anne.'' -
D: I say applicant, just because I don't know if they're going to *go* to that school. But yes, acceptance, as it reports. I presume my application was looked at and decided upon recently because the two faculty members (who I believe were on the committee) are traveling for the next couple of weeks.

Thanks. And congratulations to the Ph.D applicant with a fellowship!

I realize I'm double-posting, but I believe UIUC is now reviewing applications. I just received an unofficial acceptance in e-mail (: I hope it stays that way! I've been dancing with happy tears since 11:45PM.

Lot of People with Missing Recommendations
Herbie replied to Viking's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Regardless of the school, make sure you're in contact with the Graduate Department before they're in contact with you. This saves a lot of time. That said, I was in a baffling situation when applying to UNC. They have their *own* application portal and system, MyUNC/Carolina Connect contrary to Hobson's. I had paid the fee two weeks prior to the deadline, only to discover they've never received my LORs. I contact them, and they said they were never sent. Contacted professors, they said they sent them. Apparently upgrades or something is making LORs disappear or never show up on servers. Professors e-mailed them in, one mailed it in . . . and today is . . . . the 27th? I was contacted a week ago - they said they never received one last one: "We are considering you for nomination to GS for a UM Assistanship . . but your application is incomplete" (Wha~? Aren't most who hit the 15th deadline considered? I dunno, whatever, maybe I'm still in the running) + 10 more panic points. *This* professor is constantly on the move between here and Egypt, so I began to panic. Anyway. She mailed it in from an e-mail I forwarded her despite this being her third time e-mailing it. I figure I blew $77. ): But they got it. Now there is silence on the battlefield, and I can hear rattling in the foxhole. Handle the situation before the application is sent to respective departments. -
This is cute. Yeah, ignore that marquee tool. Wait. I can crop it on IMGUR. Eh, whatevs.

PhD Layout: images in text, which programme?
Herbie replied to Karin @ Mintpark's topic in Art History
I'm not sure I understand wholly. You already have spots to put the images and plan on inserting them swiftly, by doing something like CMD+F and then replace all? Word shouldn't crash with a Mac. . . . OpenOffice is an open source program. Perhaps someone's made a script for something such as this? Edit* On that note, you may also be able to work on it in Preview. -
Hello. I've lurked since my join date, but decided to burden the forums with my anxiety to alleviate my mail/e-mail checking obsession. I have applied to 6 graduate programs for Art History, topped with 2 additional applications for a MLS degree. Technically, 1/6 offers the degrees under a joint program, one allows you to defer your enrollment upon acceptance into both programs, and the other is joint but required two application fees (ugh). Without any qualifying or self-depricative statements about my undergraduate profile, I've attended a state university. UG GPA = 3.39, Major GPA = 3.79. No undergraduate thesis (I would have loved to know of the opportunity prior to my senior year), was part of the Art History student league and took French as my choice language. Unfortunately, as a working commuter student, I had to give up two volunteer positions at a museum (not long enough to mention on a CV) and the chance for assisting at an urban gallery. I'm obviously disheartened. Vocabulary (Kaplan) study for GRE left me with 75th percentile in V and . . uhm, something piss poor in Math. 4 on writing section left me depressed, but whatever. I've applied to UDel, UPenn, UIUC, UNC CH, BU and Pratt. I have been in contact with particular faculty prior to application deadlines. Touching on some topics in the thread: if you, indeed, choose to contact a professor - ensure that you're contacting them for research purposes, funding inquiries or specific program inquiries that the websites do not provide, or that secretaries cannot explain. Response time obviously varies for certain reasons: is the professor at a conference, how large is the graduate school, etc? But don't give up! I've tried contacting a specific faculty member since July - I've e-mailed him perhaps . . . 4 times. Once I resent the same, next I omitted superfluous information, and lastly, I simply said: "I am not sure you received my original e-mail," in December only to receive a delighted "It's good to be persistent," + dialogue I've been asking for, for a bit. This was over months period though. I just hope I get in somewhere. I cannot stand retail and being out of an academic setting.
