Hi, I recently emailed a professor to indicate interest in being a phd student under her and also listed my achievements, summary, etc. She replied saying that I should certainly apply to the phd program and that she will keep an eye put for my application. Also that I should remind her again in january, february 2012 about this. Is this a positive response or is she just being polite? Should I get my hopes up with this? Views, Comments?

Hi, I am an MS student - international student- (will finish in Dec 2011) applying for the Fall 2012 Admissions to PhD programs in CS and SE. I had applied for Fall 2011 as well but got rejected from all but 1 schools. I am applying again this time, Any advice for me? Should I refrain from applying again to the places that I had applied before or should I make sure to apply there again? One of the places that I had applied to was CMU and had made it to the waitlist however couldn't clear that. Would applying again make a difference? Changes in my profile since last time .. 1. Added 1 journal paper (journal ranked around 15 in the area) and 1 editorial in a journal - Both co-authored. 2. annual excellence award from the college of engineering - given to one student from the UG and Grad student body in engineering every year. Fellow second timers, nth timers and others .. Please let me know the dos and don'ts for a second time applicant like me, if you have any inputs regarding that. Thanks.

By when do you have to accept/reject offers from CMU?

Do you have any figues on that? i.e. which type was the greatest in number? My question stems from the fact that I have nt heard from them as yet when many others have got interview calls and so I am trying to estimate whether this means a reject probably.

Do all those who get acceptance from Berkeley (PhD CS) get interview calls frst? Are there people who got in directly without any interviews and if so are there significant number of such people? Also, whats the ratio either way?

I haven't as yet and I don't know if anyone has. Also I am confused whether SE results would be announced separately or is it all a part of the CS admit. Really getting worried now. What do you say?

It says: "Phone call from Prof today. Said it would be announced via email later this week." and the stutus shown is Accepted. So would this mean that people have been informed via phone already and this would be made official the next week. I haven't heard anything ye. Those who do not hear anything till then (by phone ) are probably not in?

am I the only one here who has applied to the Software Engineering track for Fall 2011 to PhD CS at CMU? I have observed from the previous years' surveys that CMU PHD Software Engineering's only Rejection results have been posted, that were sent around late Feb. Is the acceptance rate too low for SE (which I guess is a part of - the admissions procedure i.e. - the CS department) at CMU? I understand that people who got in must have been too happy to bother posting results but anyway I cannot conclusively say anything. So, guys and gals, any views on this? Also if anyone has any other related info please do post.

CMU PhD Software Engineering anyone? I saw that someone visited my website from CMU around Jan 17 / 19th or so, they viewed some papers of mine for which I had provided the links. I haven't heard anything from them yet. Similar is the case with Berkeley (PhD CS), website (publications) thoroughly scanned from multiple UC addresses around Jan 20 / 21 no replies yet. Can anyone suggest what this means - not hearing anything yet after this?

My profile: Master's GPA: 3.96 (currently in the last sem US univ.) Publications: 10 published, 4 in process (all co-authored - 2 with first name) , co-chair 2 workshops. GRE: 740 / 510 Undergrad GPA: 2.21 (International) Excellent and very strong recommendation Letters International Applicant Applied for Fall 2011 (PhD CS) to: CMU (SE) Stanford Berkeley Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) Georgia Tech. USC UC Irvine UC Santa Barbara Arizona State University (ASU) Please rate my chances on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 = reject, 10 = admit for sure. My undergrad GPA is bad but won;t the high GPA in MS, combined with the research work, cover up for that? Also, what do you think is the date for most of these universities that marks the time after which you stand a very high chance of reject, if you don't hear from them by then i.e.?
