  1. Just looking for information, not prying on someone's life, the information was voluntarily disclosed by the individual with the purpose of seeking feedback from a fellow student/friend (particularly given the absence of such policy at the university)
  2. Makes sense. The only thing I've been able to find at my uni is the fact that PhD students are considered like 'academic staff', but I think it has more to do about departmental responsibilities (i.e., organizing public lectures, assisting with conferences, etc.). Any other takes?
  3. From what we've read it could be perceived as a conflict of interest (same department, so there could be the 'perception' that the undergrad student is getting help from the grad student on assignments, etc)
  4. Ok guys, need your feedback on this one! A PhD student at my university has entered in a consensual romantic relationship with an undergraduate student. There is no supervisory/TA dynamics involved watsoever. The school does not have an official or unofficial policy about relationships between faculty and students. We have looked at the policies of some other schools, but they vary greatly. So what's your take - should the PhD student voluntarily disclose the information, and if so, to whom (Chair, who also happens to be supervisor, Dean of faculty, Dean of Grad studies, other?) Cheerio!
  5. Wow... lucky you! My May start date has still not been paid, and I'm in Canada!!! but I suppose yours is being paid directly by SSHRC, so you don't have to deal with your university as well...
  6. I'm still waiting... and I've got a May start date. I've called SSHRC and the payment was transferred to my university in July. I've been told that I may not get my payment until September (mine is divided in 3 installments paid at the beginning of each semester, so I may end up getting two payments in September). I asked for an advance payment for early August but the university refused. This sucks - I quit my job when I found out about the scholarship and I've had to watch every penny I've spent since, when I'm supposed to be able to relax a little, concentrate on my studies, and not worry about money. I wasn't expecting to get paid until mid to late June and had budgeted for that, but September is getting ridiculous.... I wished I had known in advance about delays in payments. And I agree, payment terms should be standardized.
  7. yes, I contacted the University and the papers were sent, and I contacted SSHRC and they've received all the paperwork but they haven't processed anything yet. Anyone else waiting to get their first payment?
  8. This is getting ridiculous... got word two months ago that we got the award, and still haven't seen a penny of it, even though I sent my payment activation papers to SSHRC and the university within mere minutes of opening my letter....
  9. yeah that sucks
  10. Has anyone else started receiving payments?
  11. I took a small leave of absence, which means that my official registration was under the 16 months quota.
  12. yes, for the PhD competition
  13. FYI, my letter says that 1907 applications were forwarded by Unis to SSHRC, and that the Council made offered 1085 awards.
  14. And how many pubs did you have when you applied?
  15. For those who are announcing their results, could you please provide additional info? This would be immensely useful to future applicants (i.e., number of referred publications, conference presentations, GPA, year of study, program, number of time you've applied before, etc). Thanks!
