  1. So yesterday I called the FLAS coordinator at Columbia to find out if I'd still be eligible for it since I got into the MA program, but not the PhD program. She said that when I didn't get into the PhD program, she never forwarded my application to the committee, but since I called and asked about it, she said the committee is still willing to look at it since final decisions haven't been made yet, but will be done by early next week, before the April 11 response deadline. So if you applied for a FLAS at Columbia and got into the MA program, I suggest calling them and making sure your FLAS application is being forwarded despite the PhD rejection. If I get the FLAS, I'll probably go to Columbia, but if not, Chicago here I come.
  2. For sure an honor . My current adviser said that MAPSS is a better masters program than Columbia though, but then again he's probably slightly biased since he graduated from UChicago and also worked as a preceptor for MAPSS as well.
  3. Same. I'm going to take my MAPSS offer though. I have 1/2 funding and my focus is linguistic anthropology, which isn't really big in Columbia, but awesome at Chicago.
  4. Just saw a few Columbia rejections via website. Checked mine, nothing there. Has anyone else heard nothing? And any idea what this means?
  5. I also got into MAPSS, half tuition. When I applied for the Anthro Phd program, I also applied for the FLAS Fellowship. On my MAPSS award offer it says that I didn't get the FLAS fellowship. Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but figured I'd share anyway.
  6. GWU has an MA program in Anthropology...
  7. Yea, it's completly unfunded. But I applied for the FLAS fellowship at Columbia as well, I may give a few to MA students, but who knows.
  8. Columbia needs to hurry up. I think people who got into the PhD program already heard, but there's always the MA program. It's the last school I need to hear from and I just want this process to be over. I already have two other offers (both MA, not PhD sadly) but the endless wait is killing me. I would still go to Chicago over Columbia, definitely better for Linguistic Anthro.
  9. It's so strange. I didn't get any funding or a TAship at GWU. It's my current undergrad institution. Logically spekaing, if I have taken the classes, got an A, know the professors, wouldn't it make sense for me to be a TA? Oh well. The choice is easy now. Chicago gave me a half tuition scholarship for MAPSS. Guess I know where I'm heading.
  10. Just got into MAPSS. Half tuition. Probably going to take it.
  11. I know I know. If I do get in, I'd have to seriously consider my options. Just out of curiosity, who is your favorite social scientist at GW?
  12. My current undergrad adviser, who went to UChicago and worked there for a while, told me not to call just yet/ He thinks I probably got rejected from the PhD program, but got into MAPSS. I'll give it until next Monday before I start bothering them.
  13. Yea, I figured. I mean, if I am unfunded I won't go. That's a pretty easy choice. I can get my MA for free if I just stay at my current university (I just have to get in first). While Chicago would obviously be more prestigious (and a better fit research wise), I don't think the level of education would be that much different. It would help that the professors there are individuals whose work I use in my research, but despite the small Anthro dept. at GWU, the professors know what they're talking about and really care about students, whether grad or undergrad.
  14. What do you think it means if I haven't heard from them yet? No email, letter, call. Nothing! So frustrating. But it seems like acceptances, waitlists, and rejections have gone out.
  15. Hi, Nice to meet someone who is also interested in Eastern Europe, there are few of us. I specifically research language ideologies, nationalism, and identity construction in the post-Soviet Ukraine. I applied this round and it was kind of hard to find schools who had professors doing research on Eastern Europe. PM me your e-mail, and I'll send you some good schools/names of POIs. Good luck!
  16. Soul Hunters by Rane Willerslev. Really interesting ethnography about Yukaghir hunters in Siberia. Involves mimesis, phenomenology, animism, and as the author constantly repeats, "taking animism seriously." This book doesn't really have anything to do with my research, but it has definitely shaped the way I approach my topic now.
  17. Yea. Me too. In between attempting to work on my thesis, I obsessively check my e-mail and grad cafe ever 20 min. Clearly I have yet to be productive since I submitted my apps.
  18. Argh. I got the Berkeley rejection email a few days ago. I guess my theory about rejections all going out the same is wrong. Nonetheless, I'm still hopeful for Chicago.
  19. yea, its just the application system. check that. then there's a new link that says decision notification.
  20. I just got the official Berkeley rejection. Came via e-mail with a link to the decision. Sucks, but I knew this yesterday.
  21. No, he didn't say. I suggest just e-mailing him.
  22. Oh no. Now I'm really nervous. Back to frantically trying to finish a paper and continually procrastinating with grad cafe.
