And the verdict was..... GLITTER! I covered the whole top in my university's color. The lights reflected off the glitter and I could be seen around the whole arena, which worked great for friends and family trying to find me in a crowd of 4,000 graduates!

The location is great, but oh gawd, that price! I think I'd pass.

I am about to graduate from undergrad in a few days and I want to decorate my cap and gown. I've been scouring the internet for ideas, but found nothing. The only stipulation is that whatever I do needs to be removable, or done on a piece of cardboard that I can take off, if the administrators ask me to remove the embellishments. Also, I am a studio art major, so creating something should be (kinda) easy. I just need ideas, please.

I am a notetaker for Deaf students in my undergraduate (aka paid to go to class, best job ever) and I had to go through a pretty intense note taker training to get certified. They gave us note taking tests and everything. Here is what I've learned about in-class notes: Leave a lot of space around everything to jot down additional notes. Start big and work your way small, star and highlight the important things because you will more likely remember what your notes looked like on the page. This is better than bullets because during a test you can think, "oh, what was the info circled in the blue highlighter?" rather than "what was that bullet? There were too many to remember." Additionally, draw diagrams and pictures. Hand written notes are better for remembering information. My notes look like hieroglyphics, theres arrows and sketches, and everything you can imagine. I know this all sounds so juvenile, and honestly, I was really resistant at first. But, it works.

Hi. What did you apply for? I ask because I saw your signature said gw, gtown and nyu - all three of which I applied and got into. Just curious. Also, yeah.... commuting. I'm going to live in a commuter area an hour away via bus for a year, crash with some people I know. Maybe live near NYU in a year or two?

Grad Housing is full already, waitlist only, because so many people renewed. Its Washington Sq. Village (Those big white high rises). Per semester, its 12,000 without a roommate and 7,000 with a roommate. Additionally, its not only grad students who live here - professors have the option of living there too (but for much cheaper rates). I would have loved to live in grad housing, but this situation doesn't seem too good.

Not 100% sure, but I'm leaning NYU. (Though an acceptance to Columbia could sway this....)

I went to the career/graduate advisor at my university to prepare for my interview, and she was lovely and all, had a list of questions such as, what do you want to do in ten years, why this program, hobbies, etc. And, guess what? My interviewer asked none of them! My advise, is don't go by any list. Know EXACTLY what is on your resume/essay so when they ask a specific question, dont pause. My interviewer asked what a specific phrase meant in my essay, and to explain how that related to my current employment. Obviously, I knew what she was talking about, but it took me a second to flip through my essay to find that paragraph, to know exactly what she was reading, and not repeat what she already knew. Thankfully, I got in, but my brief stutter, of "uh.... um..." until i found it, made me doubt how well I did in the interview.

My thoughts would be that your professors or whomever were helping you develop an employment portfolio, to show places that might hire you. They would want to see cohesiveness, and a portfolio specifically targeted to their market. A graduate program, on the other hand would want to see a wide range of work, to fully understand what your potential. Different objectives, different portfolios. Let me know if this helps. Full disclosure: I was a studio/commercial art major, not a photographer, but this is what my professors have been telling me.

Yes, Hopkins is online. I'm intrigued by the technology focus, but I think I'm pretty adept to computers, so thats going by the wayside. Now, Its between NYU and GWU.... both which look great. I have no idea what to do, and am agonizing over this. I shouldn't be, I know, because having these options are great. Both are in big cities, both have courses I want. I just need to decide! I don't know if I want to live somewhere I know (nyc) or somewhere I am familiar with (dc), limit myself to an Art Hist. focus at NYU or be more diverse at GWU (though I have no science training or anything of the like, so what would I even be doing there anyhow?). Ugh.... Now I'm getting ramble-y. Also, I haven't looked at the finances of either yet, I decided I wanted to know the programs and where my "heart" wanted to go before I got down to the nitty-gritty practicalities like money. I'd love to know your thought process, please share.

If you want artsy film, ie film fest stuff, go to SAIC. If you want to do tv and commercial films, CalArts is for you.

I did not apply, but I did call and ask them many questions about the MA track. The reason they have proposed changes and not definitive information is that they submitted the plan to the accreditation board, and have not heard back yet. When they do get an answer, they will post the facts. Additionally, the MA program is not a "back way" into the phd program. Its an MA, and then you reapply. Thats really all they said they knew.

Hovarth, I got into GWU and Hopkins. Both are pure Museum Studies programs, I believe. I want to go into art museums, so I need to look into the specifics of the AH courses taught. What are your thoughts on these?
-
georgetown. ::shakes fist::
-
I'm going to meet with my (probable) department tomorrow. What questions do you think I should ask? I am going for an MA, and I'm quite outgoing.
-
You probly won't hear back from them until the second or third week of March. Their spring break started monday. Chill out, the offices are all closed there.
-
The GW MA program (not the certificate) and NYU Administration (not Museum Studies). Museum history sounds interesting, I'm looking more to the development side of Museums. The wait is just getting annoying at this point, really.
-
Did you apply to Gtown Art and Museum Studies, or is it another program?

George Washington U?

Do you see this on the GWU application page? Where is this? Gah! -
NYU and GW. I'm a northeast/mid-atlantic person. Which programs did you apply for at each one (each has about 4 choices!)? And have you heard anything back yet?
-
good luck! I'm looking at USA (eastcoast, north and mid atlantic) programs.

I got a department email from a CCAS program on thursday. I know that GSEHD has not send out notifications yet. It seems like they are just starting to notify people. -
What would make you say no to a fully-funded offer at Columbia? That sounds like an amazing choice.

Come visit the Art History Thread in Humanities. There are usually a few conservationists there because the depts. are linked in the universities. Also, there are some museum studies folks sometimes, or maybe thats just me this year. I don't have the mind for chemistry, but I'm taking a painting conservation class now, and am procrastinating on my paper (about Cochineal Carmine vs. Kermes Carmine Pigments) by hanging out on the boards.

Bard did not, for reasons I can't fully remember. I heard from a former Bard student (after I decided not to apply) that the program leaves a lot to be desires. I would love to work in the MoMA education dept., I saw recently that a position for director of interpretation was posted, which would be my ultimate goal in ten or so years. I received word today via email that I got into an Art/Museum Studies program - I was bouncing off walls, and am having a hell of a time now, trying to write a research paper. Anyhow, how do you see the number of admits? How does everyone know how many people were admitted? I'd love to know more about my [possible] program.
