  1. Just received my Yale rejection...I guess I'm not meant to be in an Ivy...that's OK, congrats to everyone who received acceptances.
  2. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! wimper, wimper....I hate this agonizing wait.... Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Feel a bit better know.
  3. You mentioned Minnesota's Kevin Murphy (love him!). I would also add Regina Kunzel from UM as well.
  4. "Not going to shave until all the results come out! I will be a dejected, hairy shell of a man by April..." I'm not going to shave either . . . I will be a dejected hairy shell of a woman by April . . .lol.
  5. My grandmother-in-law saw both of her parents die in the Firebombings of Tokyo and eventually moved to the US as a Japanese War Bride (also sometimes considered an offensive term, many prefer to be called international brides). She endured several unfortunate instances of being called a Jap in a most hateful way. So, yes, it is a very loaded word that one must be careful with. That being said, let's all be civil to each other! Let's not let the anonymity of the internet release our inner id's.
  6. I'm working on chapter 3 of my master's thesis so I can graduate in May. This Tuesday I am participating in a Women's Studies colloquium at my university where I'll be presenting a chapter of my thesis (Women's Studies is my minor). In April, I will be presenting a paper at the Western Association of Women Historian's annual conference. So, keeping busy is a good thing while I wait out this whole PhD acceptance/rejection thing!
  7. Wow! I think everybody needs to just calm down! Think happy thoughts...Just keep swimming, just keep swimming. Guys, don't take this experience and turn it into something negative. We are all colleagues and this is an exciting time.
  8. Heck Yeah! I couldn't have said it better myself EricaMarie! By the way Ticklemepink, it's really elitist for you to say "Once you get into grad school you'll realize . . . " I AM already in grad school (Masters) and I can't stand grad students who think they have all the answers. That being said, I also use this forum to let off steam and commiserate with others who are in the same situation. It's fun! I've already been accepted to one school with full funding, but I'm excited to see what else happens.
  9. I think you should take it as a good sign. One, to hear something so soon bodes well for acceptances from other schools. Two, it sounds like your professor is willing to fight for you, which is always good!
  10. So, I must share the news with all of my new gradcafe friends. I received an email and phone call from Penn State. They have offered to fly me and two other Americanists out in February. It's an informal acceptance with a guarantee of 5 years funding. I guess they are flying us out there to see if we are comfortable with the department and potential advisors. After that, we will be offered formal admission. Yay! I hope someone else on this forum is one of the other Americanists!
  11. Wisconsin was high on my list of possible sites. I really wanted to work with Nan Enstad. After corresponding with her through email, I found out early about their drastic cuts in funding and PhD openings. I verified this with a a former colleague of mine who just began her PhD work there. She said that she has something like 30 people in her cohort and way too many people accepted offers last fall. It was with a heavy heart that I decided not to apply there. I wish everyone out there luck and I am so happy to have found this site!
  12. kyjin, Thanks for posting the email you received from Yale - as I'm sure you know, many of us (including me) are obsessed with every possible bit of news coming from this forum. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!
  13. It's awful and exciting all wrapped up in one stomach-churning moment. Refreshing the "results" page every hour doesn't help my nausea either. Did anyone else just see the Yale rejection?
